I really like your analysis of this movie/entertainer. My mom was a big Michael Jackson fan so I've been exposed to his music since however long ago. As I've grown up though, I've found his songs to be mildly satisfying and occasionally motivating.
nerdfighter here. i just don't think about MJ, and i think a lot of the nerdighters don't. maybe this is because a majority of the nerdfighters are in their early twenties or younger. maybe to this newer generation MJ is only a creper with a weird face, as opposed to a performer.
he revolutionized pop and thiller is great... but i just feel all his other songs are crap and what he did to those boys was horrible ( we all know he did it)
Let's not start making up other people's minds, alright? I think we're all quite capable of doing that ourselves. You're entitled to your opinion, of course.
yur right, im sorry... there s just some ppl that theres so much evidence but jus because their rich they get off or spend only like a day in jail, u know ... but again thats my opinion
Michael Jackson certainly created some of the best music of the past 50 years -Thriller, Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Beat It... the list is long - though how much of that was down to him alone is debatable. There's also no denying that he did a lot towards getting black artists into the mainstream conciousness.
It's a shame that he "came off the rails" so much towards the end of his life - it seems he had a lot of talent left in him.
I'm considerably older than you. I was always one who enjoyed either hard rock (in my much younger days) or way underground/hard to find music in my early 20s to now. MJ was always a joke to us, while at the same time I was secretly amazed by his dance moves and the ability to make you feel the music he made. Nerds are smart and they read... I think some of the issues in his personal life may take away some of the NF communities MJ ferver. Then again, I could be totally off base.
michael is a weird one for me as i really dislike him as a person but his music was very good. he was an icon definitely, as everyone new who he was and when he died, it was such shock.
i think its one of those things that everyone remembers where they were when they found out. see i was at glastonbury so we had no news there, and then this guy was wearing this t-shirt saying Michael jackson is dead and literally everyone was like omfg what?!
well all i ever heard of him was bad publicity so i suppose that was my image of him when he died, since then theres been so much hype, im still a little confused by it.. :)
The ironic thing is that he caught my attention only when all that shit was going on. There's this natural defense in me that wants to stand up for people who are getting picked on. And I strongly felt Jackson was being picked on by some bitter conservative guy. So I started to read into it and decided for myself: this guy wouldn't harm a fly. On the contrary, he was just too naive to be politically correct. If anything, he always stayed a kid himself. Which is weird, but harmless ;-)
Personally i think its more to do with the length of time he's been in the lime light (what is that btw?!). It's like getting into a tv show and then discovering your 4 series in it's awsome to go back and see the creation of what you now know and love. Dose that come under voyeurism? Z x
I watched it on Saturday, it was awesome (I think the show would've been epic). I love his orange skinnies too. Note how everyone speaks to him like a to a child on the brink of a tantrum though. I found that fascinating. And in general, I think he was great (and that wasn't only after he died.)
he was about 30 year older than me, and even though I think his music is quite good, I kind of only saw him as Wacko Jacko. There was this hype around Wacko, but I was simply too young to remember the good days (or maybe I didn't exist yet) what I'm trying to say is: when I got to know him through the media, he already got that 'weird image'. there was a lot of prejudice, and throughout the years, he did quite some weird stuff. but it's a fact that I probably can sing along with all his songs...
I admit you gotta have to look into it to get it. The first thing I remember coming out of him was Dangerous, and to me he was evil back then. But I was a scared little christian boy, so everything was scary. I got to appreciate it in his HIStory period. Earth Song remains my favourite.
I loved him. Always have and always will. Essentially, he revolutionized how we see musical entertainment. Music videos, dancing while performing and of course MTV. He was just so influential!
I didn't have the time to really like him before he died and when he died everyone started playing his music everywhere, all of the time so for me who didn't even really like him all that much from the start, that just kind of annoyed me. I think I'll have to wait until the dust settles and then go hide and listen to him alone, maybe then I'll appreciate it.
I think Michael Jackson is overrated. His lyrics were never particularly stunning, nor was the musical content of his work. He was original, I'll give him that, and I do quite enjoy some Jackson 5 at times. I don't know a lot about the guy, but I think society needs to realize that that's what he was. A guy. Nothing more, nothing less.
Well said, but it still leaves the question of why he got to be the biggest entertainer ever. Maybe not the greatest, but the biggest in numbers at least.
Very true. I think it's that he got started at a young age. His voice was very impressive for being so young. I'm not really sure how it happened. Then again, I wasn't there.
i loved the movie, michael is the BEST! i don't even have time to gento specifics and stuff now but any creative things this man did was nothing short of phenomenal
I think they are just trying to market his death. They had to refund all of the concert tickets that were sold out, so they lost ALOT of money when he died. All of this stuff about him, is just away to make back that money. Its been a good selling tool, and people are eating it up. I don't think I would want people making money off my death, tbh.
Of course some people are going to need their money back, but they've done it in a very tasteful and respectful way. This movie is a celebration of the man's life, made by people who loved him.
Part of the reason I think he was so popular is because he purposely made himself look crazy. Especially after that interview. The public for some reason likes watching people be self-destructive (Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Madonna, Winona Ryder, the list goes on...)
I don't think he was self-destructive. Not in the least. He got addicted to painkillers after an accident. But he was always trying to stay in top shape.
I'd like to respectfully disagree. He was known, for example, for being more than just eccentric, but rather obsessing over youth. Alleged pedophilia aside, he did things like building a whole ranch where he can pretend to be a young child and bought lots of young childhood toys. He had these strange personality traits that were signs of a deep-seated, personal, issue with himself, and the media latched onto it, thus making him more popular, and sometimes he was known to just play the part.
Oh I won't deny that he was quite strange (which doesn't surprise me looking at his youth), but that doesn't make him self-destructive, that's all I was saying. And you say it yourself, lots of it was played. I think he wasn't half as mad as he sometimes seemed. He knew what he was doing, at least until it all came crashing down when that mad hatter started prosecuting him. And even that didn't hurt him in the end, I think.
I was definitely a fan of everything from Off The Wall through Dangerous. Some amazing music that was fused with my growing up and childhood and will remain with me forever.
Generally success comes down to two things in my opinion, talent and publicity. Both are needed in large amounts for a person to become genuinely famous (and not just reality tv famous). Even if your talent is being terrible at what you are meant to be doing.
Michael Jackson was a legend. He was a performer, a dancer a singer and a very genuine man. Yes there was scandal, but you can't deny his talent. Is he the best? You can't say, opinions are ones own.
I think it's pretty much just personality and publicity. With enough of both, you can be quite successful and make people believe anything. (Or should I say quite successful AT making people believe anything?) You can be talentless and still adored.
MJ certainly wasn't a bad entertainer. But there's no way of knowing if he's the greatest. He is very well known for his art and his scandals. I suppose if enough people think he's the greatest, he must be in some respect.
yeah idk... i'm so young that all i ever knew of him was all the scandal. but really now i just find it interesting that a performer could span generations and become so much of a household name.
To be honest I don't have very strong feelings in general for Michael Jackson. He has good music, but I guess it was all a little before my time so to say. I never felt really passionate about him or something and never really focussed on him as a person if that makes sense.
It sounds really interesting though and I definitely think you have a point. If people like you they're much more likely to listen to you, or help you with anything :)
Are any of the great entertainers really brilliant? The most popular art is never the best art. The best art goes over the head of the masses. I guarantee you that more Americans have heard of Miley Cyrus than Radiohead. The Beatles are of course the one exception to this. The 60's were just a magical time I suppose.
Miley Cyrus? Never heard of. Radiohead on the other hand... ;-) The Beatles also had tons of personality. And group chemistry. Which almost automatically gives groups more appeal.
