I used to see these and the smaller ones alll of the time. I thought, "Thems the funniest looking hornets I ever saw. They must have the worst sting ever." :p
I have one in my patio garden right now. I don't remember ever seeing one before so I searched Google for "moth looks like bumble bee" and found this video. Thanks for the pictures it looks just like that.
I saw one yesterday on our tidal wave petunias. I thought I was hallucinating because I've never seen one before & didn't know what it was. It looked just like this one. I told my coworkers that there was a huge bee outside with a fluffy butt that looked like a bird's tale & they giggled. Then one of my coworkers saw it, too. Good to know I'm not crazy =)
Just saw one yesterday in my suburban Maryland back yard. It was gathering nectar from a large "butterfly bush" (cone of white flowers) that attracts everything but hummingbirds (they like red). Thanks for video and comments.
When they are at that stage I think they are full grown. Probably the best thing to do would be to turn it loose or give it a good place to fly and lots of flowers.

I can always tell right off the bat they aren't really bees; though sometimes I get them mixed up for some other hummingbird moth

Very nice. Hemaris moths are diurnal and must mimic something to discourage birds.

Yep, and their tongue is way long. The one I videoed you could see it come out and go into the butterfly bush flowers.
