    Lemme hear you say

    Fight the power

_Public Enemy - Fight the Power

  • Hey man..this was fuckin awesome. Valid points made.

  • I can't watch from the 3rd part due the copyright issues .. i hate you irony

  • This guy has such a huge boner for Greg Gillis.

  • dumpert

  • thanks for uploading this boss!

  • the human mind can only think so far and be so creative, people need to realize who gives a fuck about taking from somewhere else. if a collage is considered art and creative then so is sampling and using different things to make a compilation, Technology and other things in the world are re-created in a new way to fit the time we live in. People its MUSIC... just enjoy it DDAamm

  • So basically everything has to be original.. No sampling or building off of another idea.. Lol good luck every artist does it. Ofcourse unless the person who owns the copyrights of the song lets you. lol.... Tell these corporate heads to fuck off. They are killing our escape from reality...

  • @DJBOXXER Actually... The corporate fuckheads are the reason we need an escape from reality in the first place.

  • I just watched the video... and my perception of the whole copyrighting issue has been turned on its head. Now I have to reconcile my thoughts as a instrumental musician (drums/guitars...) with the new ideas of community creativity and remixing. Long live the MLF!

  • @rollinginschizer Well, look at MIDI created music with DAW's and VSTi's... thats nothing more than sampling large libraries of sounds, and slightly modifying them for each situation. Without that, we wouldn't have 90% of the music you see in every modern movie.

None the less, I personally think the whole issue of copyrights are all wrong as a musician/composer myself, I don't mind giving my music away, letting it take its own course, as long as notoriety is given where it came from.

  • does anyone know what that second song they play with queen in the background is?

  • ROFLLOLZ @ 5:46

  • what song is that sample of we will rock you on?

  • HUGE!

  • This may be the most important new media instructional video to date. If you're in college studying communications and this documentary isn't played in your 101 or Comm Law class, you have grounds to sue for your money back.

  • @MrMatWeller I'm happy to saw that we are watching and writing on it at my college. :)

  • @MrMatWeller so true, my professor showed this documentary to our class. I feel the same way that all media, communications or radio/tv students should watch this to understand how our industry works..

  • The Doo Doo Brown vs Here Comes My Baby Remix that starts @ 7:40 is fucking A!

Pop that pussy! Pop that pussy! ...

  • Comment thread stinks of astroturfing.

Hope the future is worth a paycheck assholes.

  • fuck ACTA

  • All the money is going on these big companies, they're gettin the big bux not the artists, they get it mostly for gigs. sssit.

  • this fucking sounds like shit. mash up = ballsack. keep it real is what i say

  • fuck the suits in the entertainment industry!!

  • Wtf is this?!?!?

He mashes songs up and everybody goes wild???

Come on man! Real DJ's make their own music, and have their own style etc.

Not that that man in the video doesn't have his own style, but he does nothing but remixing so he will never be famous as an artist all over the world like other DJ's.

I live in the Netherlands and we have so many amazing DJ's, in all kind of styles, dance, hardstyle, trance and so on.

And new sounds are just created, not just copied out of the past...

  • @TheMennoXD

What a w@n ker you're. Go get a dictionary and find out what DJ stands for: Disc jockey.

And they dont have there own style, the style evolves by time. and they usually rely on (a) basic riff(s) that they keep using in there different 'songs' with (small) variety in tones and tempo.

Alot of your so called 'amazing dj's' buy their sounds and mix it up to a nice song... they dont have time (anymore) to make there own sounds.

  • @TheMennoXD

So they'r all a bunch of 'copy and pasters'. real componers are rare.

I'm not a hater, since I also like/prefer the 'new age artists' but just get your facts striaght instead of posting nonsens.

  • @novix188 TheMennoXD means producers instead of dj's ..

  • @tukker22 2mannyDJ's is maybe an even more known example of good dj's

  • The whole copyright issue is a travesty. Proper credit ought to be given, but people should not be kept from the materials that reflect their own culture. It belongs to all of us and should never be used as an instrument of control.

  • whats real crack up is girl talk sucks shit

  • music should be free but 'artists' like girl talk who have no talent and just mashup songs don't help the argument all they do is discredit people who write and play music. its easy to knock out a dance beat and get people dancing but to actually create something and perform it is something else. when u play in a band there is a synchronicity that elevates the music beyond mere tribal instinct, something that a computer or cdj cannot reproduce !!!

  • @apocbible no ones saying that creating music isnt amazing. but to say that this guy is talentless is ridiculous. if its so easy. go make something half as good as he does. people think that because its on a computer it takes no skill. which is the wrong attitude. think of a computer as another instrument.

  • @apocbible Your band will never make it big until you get that synchronicity with your AUDIENCE as well as just your band. Anyone can make Mashups, good ones are another kettle of fish. There are MILLIONS of techno tunes, but only a few classic anthems, in the same way that the majority of "real" music is now long forgotten.Likewise "anyone" can write music, but writing music people respond to is another matter. The ART of the DJ is to respond to the crowd and feedback to them inna loop. :)

  • @apocbible Bitch, please! Let's see you make one, if its so easy.

  • that queen mix was sick.

  • Thanks for uploading dude! lol im going to also XD

  • In summation, this video's stupid.

  • @chrisMmckee and your definition of stupid would be?

  • @sinisterin89 The reason why I say this video is stupid is because the narrator is simplifying issues and pandering to his audience with things like the "copyRIGHT and copyLEFT." And the "manifesto" that pops up at 7:10 isn't even a real manifesto. A manifesto is a declaration of principals and intentions; out of the 4 points from the video's "manifesto," only the 4th point would actually fit in a real manifesto. I don't necessarily disagree with the video, this is just a bad argument.

  • 2. the narrator here is simplifying the issue. He's pandering to the viewers and over dramatizing when he says that it's "us" on the dance floor "fighting" the battle against the record companies that don't want us to hear the these songs. could it be? when I'm dancing to girl talks music at a club, am I unknowingly acting as a revolutionary? No, i'm usually drunk as fuck, dancing like an asshole, and slightly confused/excited because i'm still buzzing from the chili peppers/ lil wayne mashup.

  • @chrisMmckee He is an artist, he is a musician. It's a different plane than all other musical artists, yes, but that doesn't disqualify him from the title. It depends on your definition of musician. If to you, a musician is a person who plays instruments, then no, Girl Talk is not a musician. However, if your definition of a MUSICian is someone who makes MUSIC, then yes, he is, in fact, a musician. It takes a lot of thought to compose these pieces. --

  • 1. girl talk is not a musician. mashing up songs is not making songs. the fact that people dance to his mashups is really more of a testament to the artists who wrote the original music than anything. girl talk is only using a fraction of the effort and intelligence it takes to create music. I'll admit he does have an ear for putting things together, but there's no real art in what he does. girl talk doesn't deserve the same credit an artist does. He samples frusciante. He ain't frusciante.

  • @chrisMmckee --to confine the title of Musician to people who play instruments is just elitist.

  • @Weirdish No man, my definition of a musician is not someone who plays instruments, its someone who creates new music out of nothing. I don't think that girltalk isn't talented, but I also don't think he can be credited as a musician with the likes of the artists that he samples. That's why I take so much offense with this video. The narrator gives way too much credit to girltalk as a musician, in my opinion.

  • @Weirdish z0r put it perfectly. The artists that girltalk takes samples from are like creative painters. John frusciante of the chili peppers, for example, creates a song out of nothing, all from his head and I personally think he is a genius (that's just me). He's like a painter and girltalk is like someone who is really good with photoshop. To me it's not the same thing. A musician composes his own music, girltalk is more of a scientist. It's cool, but it doesn't deserve the same credit.

  • @chrisMmckee I agree with you.for instance guitarists may learn songs and then use their improved skill from learning songs together with their own ideas and create. But to just learn 4 songs and then take each songs' riffs and go out and say I've made something new is not creativity.

  • @Weirdish is it elitist to say that only someone who boxes is a boxer?

  • Filthy subhumans.

  • thanks for uploading NFB's site is loading so slow for me- it's only in HD.

  • yeah i can see how hard it is to click that mouse. true dj's use vinyl.

  • @sflococ ignorant...

  • @dumbatzzz lazy.

  • yeah i can see how hard it is to click that mouse. true dj's use vinyl.

  • Art and culture is so uninspiring at the moment, i'm pretty sure in a 100 years time they will call today something like the dead end of western civilization.

  • If some one creates some thing.... using some one elses idea is ok if your not making

    profit from that it.............

To take an idea and edit for the pursuite of profit with out consenting with the person is wrong ..........

But what about if a person thinks that your remix is de vaules there product buts its not for profit .........???

Im all for Creative freedom but its not so black and white wrong and right ....

Consumer VS Producer .....and the Producers are consumers so its catch 22

  • Z-Trip did this a lot better, a long time before these guys.

  • what are the name of the first songs? I NEED TO KNOW!

  • Fuck. They should show this video to youtube/google/whatever they are now

  • the thing with songs is thats its just sound waves.... all of it IS sound wave. So just taking a few micro seconds of it, shouldn't really have an owner. I mean......... they are literally putting a copyright over vibrations. D: and I think this is ridiculous, and so is copyrighting ideas to the point that you cant even copy a tiny thing without being ruined..

  • lol...... copy-right and copy-left, so he's comparing copyrights to political ideology. The right being on the side of companies and ignoring the needs of the individual. =o I see the parallel in a single sentence. Nice one.

  • The terms in this video are quite off. He's using terms with established meanings as if they have his new, self-assigned meanings. "Public domain" is all content that has no more copyright on it, or by law do not have copyright (such as expired copyrights on videos/books, or government produced materials).

The public domain is being protected and upheld, and no one is suing over it. People sue when their created product is used without payment or permission. That's reality.

  • [side comment: anyone can autobeatmach a shwack of pop songs together. go look up shitmat or cassetteboy]

  • so hes just stealing other peoples music and useing it to make him self rich.... kinda D-bagish

  • Sorry. I don't agree. They should call "sampling" what it really is: STEALING!

  • Point Made! Take it to the lowest level: We were taught that sound is made by movement, movement is energy. A remix of energy! It is like writing. Don't you think that the sentence "It is like writing" has been said before. Just like somebody places 1 musical note and then another. It's that simple& we are only talking about songs in the Englis0. What if a guitar rift is also being played in South Africa? George Washington Carver was told to copyright his ideas. He declined! It wasn't about $

  • what's the song at 1:40 and then the one with michael jackson in it at 2:12?

  • F*ckin BRILIANT! I just rediscovered my love for girtalk what a king..p2p sharing is dead anyway its all about sound recorders 'youtube downloader';) . ANYBODY WHO WANTS THE GIRLTALK ALBUM GO to illegalart dt com and click $0.00 in the checkout its a free download! peas

  • Profiting off of other peoples music is no doubt stealing. Alot of time and money is invested by a label to create a proffesional production. Mash ups are the equivilent of me painting van gogh's "starry night" and adding a dali melting clock to it and then saying "hey guys look what i made!"

  • @z0r If you pain Starry night with as beautifully as Van gogh did, and then added a little melting clock, and it looked beautiful, that would command much respect. I'm guessing you haven't painted anything like that though.

  • @L0VECHILDD lol i see what your saying but with the way technology is today i wouldnt be painting it, it would be more like me putting it in a scanner and copying to adobe photo shop then adding the clock =-)

  • @z0r it's not just that, but also trying to make it pleasing to the ear, or in this case the eye. Or if that fails, to make a message with it.

  • What a brilliant documentary, lol the end made me laugh out loud! :)

  • Take the money out of music!!! Impeach Wayne!!!!

  • 2:10 - 2:23 is such a banging remix!

If only I had that whole liveset as an mp3. :(

  • the doc starts out ok, but i find it too scattered ....

    sorry.

  • Wich is the title of the song that starts at 4:32

    thanks

    svensens

  • Girl Talk can perform mashup performances under the "Fair Use" clause in copyright law. Basically if Girl Talk's mash-ups don't compete with the original content i.e. If he plays the words to a Queen song over the beats of a 2 Live Crew song no one will be less likely to purchase a Queen or 2 Live Crew track/CD/MP3. Technically to publicly play song from a CD, DJs should pay for a performance license. Copyrighting something for 100 years is too long and unreasonable.

  • you can't sing a song thats never been sung

  • Sampling has opened up other musical ideas even if It requires zero talent to hit a record button while someone else's record is on and then calling it your own.

At the end of the day - unless you can play it yourself - you're not a musician. Just someone who has a cd player

Funny stuff seeing people dancing around a laptop - they need to got a real live gig to understand the feel of real live music coming from acoustic drum kits, stack amps and a kick ass PA.

  • @IbanezLaney ur an ideot...straight up...go to a girl talk concert and it does take talent to find 2 songs that go soo well with eachother, play them, cue them, cut them, transition them into another two songs, sometimes even 3 songs, especially wen hes doing this all in a matter of seconds live

  • @samsonisdope I've been to a girl talk concert. It's fun. I've also been to a real concert with talented musicians and that blows girl talk out of the water. for me, you're just proof that the future for great art is uncertain and scary, because you genuinely can't tell the difference and, judging by girl talk's success, neither can the general public.

  • @gebissen

wtf? no.. its acutally even illegal to sing with the crowd at a live concert

  • I saw this docco on TV in Australia last night I thought it was really well done I'd like to ad my own 2 cents

    1. I do support remixing as it allows creative avenues but I don't agree with illegal music downloading

    2. There really needs to be a Copyright reform act introduced as managment companies have too much control under current laws

    3. Creative Commons should be law and works should hit CC much sooner than it does to hit public domain

    4. Watch Brazil that nation is gonna set new standards

  • @dctcool Do you really think that Brazil is going to dictate policy to the US of A?

    Not in your lifetime Dude.

  • I agree as long as also credit is given due and it's non-profit.

  • using the logic of stealing ideas:

you CANNOT write anithing because it's someone else idea <.<

we make mashups with letters xD

  • he came to washington and jefferson college it was pretty sick

  • DAFT PUNK made millions from "stealing" music... but the stuff they made was up to date...and people got to know this songs only because of daft punk

    SO WHATS WRONG ABOUT THAT???

  • If you take someone elses property without their permission, then you are a thief. Where does it stop. May I walk into your home and help myself to your favourite chair, I think you would have something to say about that. If the Law states that something is someone elses property, then you should have the decency to leave it alone. If you do decide that you want to use it, then you ask for permission. Wheres your problem in doing the correct thing?

  • Law is made by humans, for this is not perfect, some laws are unfair, sure if there is a law that says that u must give all your money to some corrupt politician you'd be very angry and most probably disobey. Furthermore, Sure I'll be mad if u happen to take my favourite chair, then i wont be mad if u just come, copy it and then make one for urself, or even better if u can do another chair even better, great! The problem is that most times u dont get that permision, so sad

  • @Sixalienasa Definitely agree with pekisi, here. Things like coal and chairs are limited resources that can be consumed by a finite number of people. Ideas can be spread infinitely. Also, defining terms and labeling things is a strategy in this type of warfare. Thief is obviously a very loaded and emotionally charged term, so appropriating it for one's own use is very desirable. People were once property. Peasants who ate the food they farmed from their land were once thieves.

  • Dude, what are you talking about?

In the real world, ie, the one most of us live in, you do not make sense.

These people making money from ripping other people off, would just as soon rip you off if the need arose.

  • I'm sorry, "dude". I was just talking about how "ripping off" other people is "totally sweet". I apologize if my language wasn't bitchin' and in-your-face.

  • Wait till you get ripped off, and it will come to you, then tell me how sweet it feels, ha ha.

  • @Sixalienasa killyourself. THere's a difference between purchasing songs and changing the auto-play and tune, and me walking into your house, using your toilet and leaving. ONce you purchase a song, you are free to do with it what you want. THats why all the lawsuits against him were dropped. He purchases the songs and then mashes them together. You are a fucking idiot. Its music, and people usually create music for one purpose: entertainment.

  • @MrTuuc I can see from your way of expressing yourself that you are of the opinion that only your opinion matters, and that you can use the foulest of language to try to make someone else whose opinion differs from yours feel inferior. Do yourself a favor and educate yourself, you will be a better person and the world will be a better place. By Educate, I mean go back to school.

  • Do not speak to me about education. Your an idiot if you think cursing shows that I am inferior. This opinion is shared by many, including the author/narrator of this documentary. Free advice: don't leave a post that disagrees with the video itself and everyone leaving comments. Sets yourself up to be torn apart by "uneducated" ppl such as myself. Tard

  • @MrTuuc I did not say that you were inferior. I said that when people use profanity it is usually the result of a lack of vocabulary. I am guilty of it at times when I allow myself to become angry. If I feel I should comment on a video, then I believe that it is the right of everyone here on utoob to make a comment. As long as they refrain from the use of language which will cause offence to others. I apologise if the language I used caused offence to you. If you make a stand you take flak.

  • could anyone tell me how that type of sticker is called where 4 ideas of manifesto are typed?? thanksss

  • the type of sticker is a label from a labelmaker device..labelmaker wiki perhaps?

  • Most likely from a Dymo embossing label maker

  • cheers! i have tried to figure out it for ages..

  • MOP ante up.

  • whats the song @ 3:13

  • i just watch this movie, its quite awesome

  • Yeah i thought it was great.

  • Who will try to come up with good ideas if they know once they share them they can become everyones idea

  • @jacknelsongod15 Correction, it's who will express those ideas, but that's to only say that we express ourselves merely for profitable gain and not for the sure enjoyment and interaction with the world. Think about who this hurts. People like Lady GaGa, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson? People who don't write their songs. Look up who makes money off of master recording licensing. I for one would LOOOOVE Girl Talk to mash-up my music, it inspires new creation an promotes me as an artist

  • @burneden Lady Gaga writes all of her songs, bro.

  • @JudoCreature touche good sir. Was just listing major label artists not thinking. Feel stupid because I always liked GaGa for the fact that she wrote her songs. she's the new MJ.

  • check out whosthisguy23

  • love this movie

  • I agree.

  • Most of the world doesn't give a fuck about a 'copyright war' ...they're too busy dealing with malaria to consider this a legitimate movement of any sort.

  • @garci619, not sure the mix, but sounds like a sample of the intro to t.a.t.u - all the things she said.

  • Hjkl

  • Yes Im wondered too to know what beat started at 4:33

  • what is the beat starting at 4:33 ?

  • blazzed? search "she'll trip your faicce"

  • COPYFIGHT!!!!!

  • fail

  • club music is gay. true sampling in my opinion is when you take samples from other songs and "flip" them, or in a more understandable term for you, rearange small pieces of the song to make the sample unrecognizable by listeners. Sampling is an art long forgotten by these bubble gum dj's who use casio drum kits. And if you want to say that sampling is unoriginal..well, I play a vast collection of percussion instruments and can play most instruments by ear, so I sample myself also.ORIGINAL

  • watch it, do it, be heard. dont let the past control who you are or your future!! break the cycle, recycle!!

  • Although I generally disapprove of sampling, but I don't hate it because it's 'stealing' (it's not stealing, but I can't think of a better word) I normally hate it because it's mostly fake instruments, but disregarding that, I totally approve of the use of samples, at least in the idea of 'piracy'

I do admit that I enjoy hearing two totally different songs being put together, and I believe that if that's illegal, it's fucking fascism.

  • Comment removed

  • i did not read thet rest of your comment. I got worked up on anoter comment and felt like going on a shit talking frenzy. sorry.

  • watched all the pieces of this, its fantastic. Thank you for both entertaining me, and inspiring me.

  • WOW

  • i almost liked it, but i didnt like the hidden political message. "copyRight" and "copyLeft". clearly trying to make conservatives look evil.

  • this is a cool video, but I disagree with it. The people who made these things put a lot of time, money, and effort into them and mostly did it with the hopes of getting paid for their work. I think mash ups and remixes are awesome, but you can't steal other people's works and ideas that they labored over and treat them as your own. Their is such a thing as a public domain, and it is defined by law, but not everything ever created belongs in the public domain immediately

  • That is like saying its okay to rip the Mona Lisa to shreds and glue it back together. Some things should remain the same and I believe music is one of them. Its the artist creation not to be toyed with. I have no problem with this generation making music just don't destroy perfectly good music. I'll keep watching the videos that go with this to see if it changes my mind although I severely doubt it.

  • @Xehnanator:

"Destroy" perfectly good music? Someone can do whatever they want to any song, but it will always be there in it's original form on millions of albums and MP3s for you to listen to. If you don't like their mix, don't listen to it.

Basically, it's more comparable to rearranging a $1 copy of the Mona Lisa than the real thing.

  • I have a similar point: I have no problem with that way of creating musica, it's just I don't like to hear it.

  • It's worth the thought actually. Expecting a hint of maturity in a Youtube comment is silly though. Especially when don't have the attention span to finish something before judging it. :)

  • Wow! Who wants to watch someone on a laptop? I can't see getting pumped up to watch someone click a mouse. SAMPLING IS NOT AN INSTRUMENT!!! Also, I love how this guy is explaining the internet to us. The remix was around before the internet, it's been on turn tables for decades.

  • Girl Talk is a dumb idea anyways.

  • Very informative, thanks!

  • test

  • good stuff right here.

  • WATCH THIS_

  • I'm enjoying whatever this is!

  • Why was he able to make one of the worst videos me or anyone else have seen

  • BOOOORING

GOd that fucking bored me out

  • I dig remix culture, but why should one artist be able to profit from another artist's work without throwing them a cut.

It's hard enough to make a living as a musician in a world where people feel like music should be free, why should someone be able to profit from my ideas without throwing me a cut?

  • CLEVELAND IS WHERE ITS AT

  • Comment removed

  • Puck Private Foperty! Especially when it doesn't tangibly exist.

  • we're all remixes of our biological parents... or maybe its more of a mash-up

  • @trav12433 Well said, I did a paper using that metaphor of the remix. :)

  • i saw this whole movie on television. It was actually one of the most interesting things i've seen in a while.

  • WHY MUST EVERYTHING BE POLITICAL????

  • fsdfs

  • Well first of all, this music sucks.

Second of all, these folks are losers.

  • and making comments about them on the internet makes you a winner. SIKE!

  • wow. look at all of these losers.

  • I don't know if this is the most fail thing I've ever seen or the dumbest. I'm not even sure who's the bigger dumbass, the guy who's supposedly "making music," or the dumbfucks freaking out over it.

  • obviously, you haven't heard Night Ripper or Feed the Animals.

  • I'm not a big fan of Girl Talk, but anyone who thinks mashups and sampling are bullshit should listen to some DJ Shadow or Ninja Tune albums and shut up.

  • with a name like CJAnonymous you ought to know...pick up an instrument and take the time to learn to play it then your opinion on music might count for something.

  • @garryt37: I've been playing bass (guitar & upright) for three years. I've also made mashups and practiced DJing.

  • прикольно
