Up here,in Canada, we learn how to use "our brains" to solve quadratics, PLUS we see how a calculator does it. This gives a visual of what is happening. It also allows us solve equations like 345.76x^2 - 2 456.73x + 34.12543,  which would be doable, but cumbersome without a calculator.

That song does not work for me at all. What does work is this: There was a negative boy who couldn't decide whether or not to go to a radical party. He was a square boy so he missed out on 4 awesome chicks. The whole party was over at 2 am.....or I just plug the quadratic equation in my ti89 and press enter, which is even easier to remember.

I am very good with mental mathematics since I have been picking up math tricks since grade 8 (1960). However, this TI-84 Plus that I have, can do things that are impossible (for me at least) to do in my head. I am sure that the same is true for you, and I know it is true for my students.. We have class sets of them, so the student does not have to purchase there own.

If you are trying to figure out the zeros or two x-intercepts, then you should probably use the equation with the discriminant.

i agree it does make us lazier but i try to only use them when im in a hurry or if im solving abig problem but even then i use pen and paper so its faster
