The gimmick was meant as a tribute to the androgynous stars of classic Hollywood. Marlena was named for Marlene Dietrich.

@ToroRosso20: Politics from outside WWE got in the way, since GLAAD (the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) objected to the gimmick. This led to the intro of Marlena and the gimmick eventually being watered down with the explanation that he had been playing "mind games" with his opponents.

According to his Twitter, he's not completely recovered yet, and he's taking a little break while he works backstage with the Divas.

Probably setting up a nice backstage role for himself for when he does actually decide to finally retire. Previously, he'd said 2012 would be his last year, but we'll see.
