its a shame cessna did not make 172s that had room for the pilot to stand up. At least then you would be able to use a toilet. do they make in flight urination system with electronic vacums built into flying suits
if cessna 172s were produced at the rate of say a ford fiesta then they would drop in price rapidly. in order for the price of flying to drop rapidly to that of a family car we need make it more availible to the masses. the fact of the matter is that most roads are big enough to accomodate micro airplane for takeoff. alot of fuel is beign wasted on uneccesary car journeys which could be used on aircraft for families to own that could cross the atlantic via iceland and greenland for fuel stops
its a cessna 172, fixed pitch propeller, and fixed undercarriage and that was a hot start...i'm flying one of this at my school here in fiji...trying to get a CPL -license...thank you for the video....but you should remember to put one hand on the throttle at all times....flying is all about safety.

it would be interestign to see experimental aircraft built from plastic. these days we have high tech plastic that is so strong and capable of with standign high tempreture. obviously the engine would not be made from plastic but the airframe and wings could be. Maybe electric plastic long range gliders capable of high speed are the future. with this in mind it puts us one step closer to being able to cross the atlantic without large amoounts of fuel required.
I fly one of this on my own from Discovery flight lesson and take off my own and land back at KHHR man this lesson cost way too much for me dam any way have a good one over there.

It's fuel injected thats for sure. Also I completely love how the panel is much much cleaner and looks more new and stylish than the ones I have been flying. Of course the dials are the same but its's something that makes you think fresh and new about this plane.
Is it standard operating procedure to start enginge with mixture out for you guys? I've been taught to have mixture rich during engine start, or did you guys have any special reason?
@Yardieboss Yeah, I thought that was different too, I was more concerned with the fact that the engine hit 1500rpm when starting, thats really hard on the oil filter. Nice video though, what kind of camera were you guys using?
exactly what FlyingCommander said, i fly 172N that have carburetor so mixture is rich, but i believe this is a 172R(might be mistaken) which is fuel injected.

@186771054 There is a special reason as a matter if fact. The type of cessna show in the video was most likey between a 97' and a 99'. Although that doesn't matter that much, 172's from 97' and up are fuel injected and that's how the check list works is to have the mixture out till the engine starts then pushi it in immiately after.
@186771054 Its an electronically fuel injected engine, you start it the the mixture cut every time as far as I know. The older planes you start full rich.
@186771054 This is a fuel injected 172, I'm assuming that you fly a carburated one. On fuel injected engines you start with the mixture lean, and enrich as soon as the engine starts. That is standard for this plane.
@186771054 You are correct if starting a Skyhawk with a carburetor. The new Skyhawks are fuel injected and have a different starting procedure (as soon in the footage). From what I remember, turn the fuel pump on, mixture rich until rise in fuel flow, mixture cut off, turn key, when engine fires push the mixture in.

@Yardieboss Yeah, I thought that was different too, I was more concerned with the fact that the engine hit 1500rpm when starting, thats really hard on the oil filter. Nice video though, what kind of camera were you guys using?
jpwsml 1 year ago
The special reason for starting with mixture off is that the engine uses the "modern" way of fuel injection;)
The way you descibe is the starting procedure of a carburator-engine.
FlyingCommander 2 years ago
exactly what FlyingCommander said, i fly 172N that have carburetor so mixture is rich, but i believe this is a 172R(might be mistaken) which is fuel injected.
braziliannutts 2 years ago
I have seen this once before in a video from america on youtube. but throughout my training and my flying in my homecountry Iceland you put the mixture full forward and throttle open 1/4 inch. You never start with the mixture out.
It ain't like that in the checklist I have.
saevaroa 2 years ago
Yeah and Flyingcommande/braziliannutts explained that :) That's quite a lot of throttle, I usually only give one or two centimeters tops. :-)
186771054 2 years ago
1/4 of an inch is less than a centimeter. Twist brumm brumm and 1000 rpm and check oil pressure and temperature immediately. lol
saevaroa 2 years ago
Haha ah I thought I've read 1/4 of power setting :-D
186771054 2 years ago
@saevaroa: Did you notice that this is a 172 SP without carburator ? The SP you always start with mixture in lean position and you push it in once the engine starts. In case of carburator engine, you have to start with mixture at full rich position.
hvdfelsen 2 years ago
I did not know that. I have never flown anything other than carburator engines. But you learn as you go.
saevaroa 2 years ago
@186771054
You are right. For the Cessna 172 (carburetor) you always start with mixture at full rich position. There is no 'warm start' defined for this model.
Only for the Cessna SP (non carburetor) you start with mixture at lean position.
I think this here was just a mistake, he found out and corrected it by applying full rich - that's when the engine finally started. ;O)
hvdfelsen 1 year ago
@186771054 It is fuel injected and that is why you do it like this. I am used to the same as you but this plane is different.
saevaroa 1 year ago
@186771054 It is normal to have full mixture during engine start for carburated engines (older planes).

@186771054 This is a fuel injected 172, I'm assuming that you fly a carburated one. On fuel injected engines you start with the mixture lean, and enrich as soon as the engine starts. That is standard for this plane.
