Pete was a good drummer, but he never could have contributed to the band the way Ringo did. He didn't sing, he didn't write songs. If Pete were in the group, there would never have been an "Act Naturally,," an "Octopus' Garden," a "When I'm 64,: And later one, there wouldn't have been an "It Don't Come Easy," either.
It's so stupid the way people say this guy's the best or that guy's better. Music isn't a a contest. It's supposed to make you feel good. as a musician it not about talent, it about being a good entertainer. I respect OropherThranduil views. But, if I had a chance to meet any former Beatle it would be Pete Best.
One thing is for sure ,both Ringo and Best were Beatles at one time and now they are not. Who is the greatest drummer don't matter to them.I understand, why Martin said his didn't care what drummer played live. He Ghosted out Ringo on the "Love Me Do" session too. the last straw was when the 3 heard that Martin wanted to titled their first 45 rpm to rename the band "PB and the Beatles".
@artfxl5 Not so! George Martin was not impressed at all by Pete Best's drumming and there's no way in the world would he have considered naming the group with Pete's name first. Some of the girl fans at the Cavern called the band "Pete & The Beatles", which annoyed John & Paul, because they saw him a a periphery member only. Paul & George in particular didn't really bond with Pete, whereas with Ringo they did. When Martin mentioned the doubts he had about Pete, it was the last straw.
@daddykornflakes You can try and made look like Best's sacking wasn't a stab in the back all you want but the facts are there. None of the beatles ever spoke to him again, if it was not personal they would have, and if it wasn't personal they wouldn't have lied about Best being anti-social.
WHAT THE FUCK THIS IS SO SPED UP WHAT IN THE FUCIKING HELL MAN TAKE THIS OF THE NET
AND PETE BEST WAS A SHOWOFF, THATS WHY IT GIVES THE ILLUSION THAT HES BETTER. REALLY HE ISNT, PETE BEST HAD TERRIBLE TIME. LISTEN TO THE ORIGINAL RECORDING OF "LOVE ME DO" WITH BEST ON DRUMS. DURING THE HARMONICA SOLO HE COMPLETELY CHAGES THE BEAT.
although i do love the drum beat to this song in particular, i HATE IT SPED UP IT SOUNDS ALL FUCKY (fucky was a joke lets all laugh, dont get mad)
@Nelson676 Agreed, best conned his way into the band because he had a drum kit, a car and his mum owned a cafe, so they had a place to practice if they had him in the band.
He joined them the day before they went to hamburg because they were hoping to find a decent drummer but Paul phoned Pete and asked him as they were desperate.
Lennon said pete best was only in the band untill they could find a decent drummer.
Pete was always pretending to be sick and ringo stood in for him...
@PinballCrusader You're correct. It's definitely George singing. They did 15 songs for the Decca audition and shared them equally, 5 each. The only reason Paul and John sang more on the LPs was cos they wrote most of the songs. In their Hamburg days when they were on stage for hours they alternated between John , Paul and George singing lead vocal.
As a bassist I can not hear anything wrong with pete's beat on this recording. He also plays with alot of zest. his rollouts are there, listen. Keep in mind that this recording is a demo, one take without any overdubbing in the tracks. I don't care what people say that have a tin ear, he's got the chops and he knows it, too! He was fired because, he drew more attention than other members at that time.
Simply put, he didn't stand a chance against Ringo, Both the Star-Club Tapes prove that, just like comparing single takes from the sessions for please please me with the decca audition with pete.
There's a reason why Ringo was regarded as the hottest drummer in/from Liverpool long before Best got his first drum kit.
also the guy who later hired bernard purdie to overdub drums in 64 over their hamburg sheridan recordings, and compared to ringo versions the beat here just doesn#t have it.
The drums are good but they were mixed too quiet. Fellow drummer Chris Curtis from The Searchers said that at that time no-one could handle Pete's drumming in studio, it was too loud. CC also said that he planned change from drums to guitar and take PB as a drummer. He also said PB was a genious.
@danziiiiiiiiiggggggg, they didn't think Pete was good. George Martin would not let Pete play on the recordings. In fact, Alan White played on Love Me Do. Ringo is still mad about that. Pete was fired for good reason. And the Beatles are not the Beatles without Ringo.
@TotalHeel glad u like ringo my dad fucking hates him plus it wasnt pete exactly his style of drumming wasnt so good for recording hitting the bass to push the beat
@TotalHeel Andy White, not Alan White played on Love Me Do. There are 3 versions of Love Me Do. Ringo plays drums on the original EMI recording, used for early pressings of the 45. Ringo tambourine on the re-recording made a few days later with Andy on drums.. The Andy White version was used on later single pressings and the album PLEASE, PLEASE ME. Ringo's version was on RARITIES, and PAST MASTERS. The 3rd version has Pete Best on drums, and is available on the ANTHOLOGY recordings.
@TotalHeel Pete was fired for good reason? What rubbish. He was good enough to be a beatle for over 2 years. It's funny he suddenly wasn't good enough when EMI offered a record deal. Ringo didn't even play on the first session.
@FabRadio Hmmmm.....does a surviving Beatle (Paul) still not talk to Pete?? It's been over 50 years ago!! That is petty! I don't care how nice and down to earth McCartney seems. Until he makes this right he is worse than a fool on the hill in my book. Pete at least deserved to remain on speaking terms after his dismissal. They handled that situation terribly and they know it. And now their fans are beginning to know it
@fidel70able funny how people are striving for this drumming style now. as far as beat music goes, pete best was it. can you play the drums?..even if you can..fuck off.
This is no where near as good as the coasters version, it sounds rediculous compar eyes the original.
