  • Yup..the Burkart testing room.

  • # 3, and # 9 . Originally # 3 jumped out at me as by far my favourite, but as I have been listening again, I am growing to like #9 more and more for its attention grabbing and different quality

  • Amazing talent. I'd love to hear you play "Be Thou My Vision." By chance, do you attend church and use this great ability to promote the things of God? Just curious.

  • wish the answers were posted!

  • #3, # 4 for the same reason's other's have mentioned, nice deep rich resonant tone. # 7 for the clarity and brightness.

#9 surprised me and I really liked the combo of rich with bright on it.

    #10 not. at. all.

  • I liked 4 the best.. it seemed the darkest.

  • She'd sound good on anything-even a pop bottle.

  • what is better : soldered or drawn tone holes and why?

  • I loved 1, 4, and 10

  • to be honest i liked all the flutes and would be happy to own any one of them lol

  • Hi Nina,

I was wondering if they made Titanium flutes? I'm allergic to Nickel and cant use or wear anything made of Nickel. Also since I'm planning on teaching myself, and joining band next year i was wondering were i could get one reletively inexpensive, since my father just got back to work after being out of work for a year.

    Thanks,

    Ashley

  • @GiggyDawg

Hi GiggyDawg, they actually do make titanium head joints. I dont know about solid titanium flutes though. if you're are not allergic to nickle you can get a silver plated flute. if you are allergic to silver you can also get a gold plated flute but this would obviously be more expensive. hope you can find a flute that works for u!

  • I absolutely LOVE #7 & #8

but if I HAD to choose one,

I'd go with #7 because the

    notes (in my opinion) speak

    a lot clearer then #8.

  • Hmm.... & now I that I think of it....

I am inlove with #1's tone...

but I also fancy the clearness of #7.

  • this test is very interesting to me since I'm planning to buy a burkart flute. I already listened to your other video explaining the results but I think the test to be complete should include the final result with all the flutes. this would help people to decide between the other materials beyond number #1, #3, 4# and #10. I don't even know wich flute do you play! I just know it has a PT raiser... congratulations anyway!

  • Did we ever get the results on this?

  • I like most number #8 !!!

  • I like #1 #8 and #10

  • Gosh, how beautiful and gentle sound of the flute! as her name is Mrs. Nina same?

  • Hi Nina,

I just listened to this again, and I know you already have gotten a new flute. I think you sound great on the Sankyo. I acatually liked 3 best, 4 (which I wrote has a great ringing resonance) then 8. I was not a huge fan of 1 or 10. Odd based on the overall results, but this was a great experiment.

  • Thanks!

  • I've not been able to detect much difference between reactive and non-reactive metallic head joints, but I can when the body (especially body and head joint) is made from some different materials such as polymer, wood and metal...I've always found that a well warmed up metallic instrument and limbered-up emboucher make the most difference of all.

  • I love no.9 and 10

The sounds are quite deep and smooth

  • i love number 8 [:

  • I like 3, 4 and 8

  • it is very encouraging vdo for my leaning flute

  • beautiful sound. :D

    I like flute #1 #8 & #10

  • I liked the first one the best. The sound was very open it vibrates more than on the other flutes...

  • I don't speak english!!!!!!!

i want to lear to play

    Place subtitles in Spanish!!!

  • But it is not the same thing to write that to speak, costs much more

Besides that to write you can use a translator, but to listen to something in English, if you are a 16-year-old young man with basic Englishman, is very difficult

  • Comment removed

  • How about you get a grasp of the English language, and use proper grammar? All you are is an ignorant child who cannot understand that resources such as these are open to the world, not just your mediocre boxed in idea of a world.

  • Gosh, not a very merciful reply to a 16 year-old. Did you notice how the ignorant child knew when to use a comma and hyphens to join words? Perhaps, 'mediocre, boxed-in', would have been a good example.

  • no le haga caso a ese idiota. entendiste este video? buscá más la idea, no te preocupés tanto por las palabras. Y si hay alguno que definitivamente no tenés idea, escribime y te ayudo apenas tenga el tiempo, te parece?

  • Dear nina. Which is your favorite flute, brandor type of flute. We here in latinamerica are abit of Yamaha-freaks but after watching this series of videos for the 3rd time, I'm beggining to think it's more in the flutist than the flute itself. Am I crazy? Allyour flutes sound so beautiful, I hop esome day my flute sound half as good as yours.

But, well, as I was saying, what's your favorite o favorites? I'll keep ypur opinion in mind whenI buy my next flute. :o) Kiss kiss!

  • The piece being played is nice, but is toooooooo long. By the time the next piece is done being played, I've forgotten what the last flute tone sounded like.

  • i have a burkart headjoint on trial right now

    i love it.

  • Surprisingly, the 19.5K Gold one does not have much personality to it. It is very "standard" and bland.

  • Some top end instruments don't play themselves. As a result, though, when played properly they can deliver the best of whatever sound is pushed from them. Often it requires specific technique for the specific instrument. If one is accustomed to playing a certain instrument it is often that the switch to another unit will not yield the same results as far as control.

    Beautiful playing.

  • I can kinda tell the difference...

    And WOAH, your good.

I could never play that fast. XD

  • a bit wasted on youtube "quality" sound! But for sure, I can Hear differences, but may not the realistic one.

  • I can clearly see the diference, but I have no idea on what metal is each one.

But the first one is really really mucho more clear then the others, the notes were much more inteligible.

  • i have heard the difrence but i am dutch and my english is very bad so i cant tell the difference.

  • This doesn't seem to be a terribly valid test since much of the sound will be masked by the poor quality of the youtube encoding.

  • My flutes ranges from US $300, to $1700. I tried all of them before my families members, they say all 'NOT much difference'.... indeed he one they like is the newly bought US $300 flute. (about 2 weeks).

Beauty of sound MAY not necessary be directly proportional to price, though the key mechanism can be, free from tarnish and to stain can be.

  • You experiment is not objective in that:-

You need time to adapt to different flutes (but you definite have your own embouchure).

You feel the difference because the ears of the players are ALWAYS about 8-10 inches from and BEHIND the head joint while other audience are several feet (at least) and BEFORE the flute. The very obvious difference to you is not obvious to others.

  • The first note pretty much gives it away.

Can I ask if the wall sizes are the same? That could have an effect on the sound. the first few flutes you can hear a very dark tone, 5 and 6 sound like there's a slight resistance them, especially flute 10.

My favorite would have to be #1-3

  • 1. was really bright

    3. had a really broad sound

    4. had a rich deep sound

    5. and 6. were really clear.

  • u re playign very well!!! i cant make differences between them

  • sounds a little differant at 6 maybe it sounded lower not sure

  • 10, without any doubt

  • Very little difference. 7,10 seemed darker. I liked 10 the best. Some have a thinner sound but very minimal.

  • hi nina thaks for your videos

i want to buy a new flute in fact i've already used yamaha ylf 211 but it was stolen so i have to buy a new one and i save money for it can you offer me brand for not very professional cuz i am playing just for fun

    love from turkey

  • flute 10!

  • They all sound fantastic, but I really liked #1, #2, and #10.

I was wondering though, what piece are you actually playing, Nina? I really like it. It's so fun and whimsical.

  • SMCIZ:

Thanks. It is the Grande Polonaise by Theobald Boehm

  • You sound incredible on all of them!

  • fursteneau :P

  • i think that each flute is for different needs.if someone has very good soung at the low scale and is a bit problematic at the highest scale he will need something that will help him.

but maybe this is something that has to do with the headjoint...

i have a silver miyazawa and i m quite ok (and my pocket also is ok :)) but i think that in the near future i ll have to buy a new one...what do you propose me to test?

  • i'm learning so much from your videos! i'm a flute student from uruguay.

thanks for sharing all these videos with us.

  • Shes not copying. Shes a professor, trying to share her ideas and knowledge with the youtube community. And although the experiments are somewhat the same, shes trying to show different points.

  • You sounded all the same, some a little airy but the core is the same on every single one of these instruments. I personally don't believe in the whole metal debate but I think the cut of the embrouchure hole makes the difference. For those of you who are instrument buffs, it's the player who voices the instrument. Sorry to disappoint you, but Nina and Galway both proved it.

  • #3 & 9

  • Awesome video!

  • #7 is def my favorite! although you sound fantastic on all.

  • Hello Nina !

Wow, super... #2 and #7 are my favourite flutes.

    Thanks for video !

  • oo i like #7...more dark and broad

  • Hi, I'm a horn player, and we kvetch about equipment, metal type, etc., all the time also. Glad to know other instrumentalists do too. Nina, you're a wonderful player, and you sound great on all of them...I'm sure you could make a Bundy sound great!

  • Hehe.... Made up my directly.. It´s #1 for me!!

  • I like flute #2 and #7. these are my favourites.

  • The exercise if almost to get it 100% right.

Rampal is said to have picked up a silver flute, in a documentary interview, and said to the interviewer: "This is the sound of a silver flute (plays). This is the sound of a gold flute (plays same flute, making a different tone colour. (Copied from Jennifer Cluff Web site).

  • Favorite flutes:#1 and #9 for their quickness and projection

Least like flute #8: Lack projection and dead tone 1. 998 silver 2. 10K gold 3. 14K Gold with soldered tone holes 4. 5-95 flute with 998 silver head and platinum riser 3. 19.5K gold 6. 14K Gold with drawn tone holes 7. Silver .16 wall with 14K gold headjoint 8. 5-95 (silver-platinum) 9. Silver .16 wall with platinum headjoint 10. Silver .16 wall with platinum riser

  • Very beautiful. But, one thing is sure, I would buy the #1 flute, after the #3. Thx for the video. Bye

  • 10: 14K Gold with soldered tone holes

9: 14K Gold with drawn tone holes

    8: 10K gold

    7: 19.5K gold

6: silver .16 wall with platinum riser

5: silver .16 wall with 14K gold headjoint

4: silver .16 wall with platinum headjoint

    3: 5-95 (silver-platinum)

2: 5-95 flute with 998 silver head and platinum riser

    1: 998 silver

  • First time I thought I heard a slight difference on flute #7, perhaps the low notes were colored with a fringe of air, but second time I could not hear any difference in any of the 10.

I once heard a PBS broadcast about a platinum flute that they claimed spoke the notes sooner than flutes of other metals and that the volume of the notes was louder. I did not hear/notice either of these differences in your clips.

Your playing is simply beautiful on every one of the flutes.

  • I'm pretty sure that #7 was one of the gold flutes. (the darker sounds..as halfnote07 and others said)

    I liked #1, 7, and 10 the best.

  • This was a very interesting experiment. However, to my ear the live quality of the room in which it was recorded obscured most of the kind of detail that I listen for differences in flute/head joint sounds.

  • wow, i my only be 14 and only play a gemeinhardt 3shb with a custom headjoint, but that was fantastic!

  • um wow i may only be 14 and been playing the flute for years piccolo for almost 4, but that was fantastic!....

  • my guesses: #1: heavy wall siler #2:thin wall silver #3:10k gold #4: medium wall silver #5:14K #6:10K gold #7:19.5K gold #8:14K gold #9: thin wall silver #10: platinum hope i'm close! ;)
  • I second halfnote07, #7 is much mellower and darker than the rest, must be 19.5K gold, I like #1 and #10 tho.

  • Can you do it one more time? I didn't get it the first time. Ha ha ha!

  • I found that a silver and a gold Haynes played very differently for a live audience. Both responded completely different, so I know for a fact the metals will make the resonse very different. I don't find it arguable either. However, on a recorded test like this it can be very different.

  • I'm not sure what metals the flutes that I favored are made of but there were big differences in tone and intonation qualities. No's 1 & 10 were the best for you. No. 4 was the worst. The tone (and on some others) was very spread out at the beginning and the C#s were very sharp for you.

  • Nina, you sound great on all 10 flutes! This should be comforting to all of us since it demonstrates that the flutist is more important than the metal or the features of the flute. I did have a favorite, and that was #1. I thought the tone was richest on that one. Number 4 was my least favorite.

  • Well, to be quite honest, the differences were only very slight.

I personally, after hearin this video, don't believe that different metals will REALLY affect your playing.

You played beautifully in all of them.

    =)

    I personally liked 8, 10, and 2.

However, I think number one was more energetic, and your notes were a bit more intonated.

    I love them all!!!

    xD

  • is it because you're sooo good, u could produce a perfect tune anyway? otherwise, wat is the point for me to get a better flute???

  • is it because you're sooo good, all flutes could produce a perfect tune anyway? i mean, if they all sound THESE much similar, wat is the point for me to get a better flute?

  • fluteytunes: When you or your teacher feel your current flute is limiting your progress or not letting you sing they way you feel you can, then it is time for a new flute.

  • perhaps a new headjoint will do the trick. Or just a good tune up on the mechanisms.

  • Honestly, I can't tell much... Need to hear live! The video camera's audio recording capablility may not give accurate picture.

  • #10 is my fave... i'd guess it's silver .16 wall with platinum headjoint... i have NO clue... excellent playing though...

  • I LOVED flute #1. I'm not sure of my guesses, but I wrote down what I thought each flute might be.

#1 and #8 were my favorites.

  • I liked #10 the best!

  • fantastic!!!an enormous work!!!a great development!bravo!you have really teaching skills... bravo et a bientot!!patrice.

  • #1: Gold

    #2: Silver

    #3: Platinum

Those are the only guesses I'm making, I'm just not sure! I've found that for myself personally, gold tends to not resonate as well, and gives me a brighter sound, which I don't like; I prefer a dark sound. I play a silver body and foot with a custom headjoint of Karitium with a platinum riser. Nina, do you like the Burkarts in general? I've never tried one, but I'm actually in the market for a backup flute. Thanks! ~Marissa

  • Intermezzo441: I have had my Burkart since early 2001 and I have been happy with it ever since. One of the flutes in the demo is mine!

  • This demonstration should be done by playing a single pitch while simultaneously showing the viewers where it measures on an anolog tuner. Not digital. Im more curious about a wooden flute though.

  • my favorites are #1, #7 and #10 :]!!

  • #10 i

  • Im curious about how the timber would be affected by a more drawn out tone hole.

  • #1 and #3

  • i think number eight is gold. However I think a better demonstration would be to measure one note while simultaneously show where it falls on an anolog scale not dgital. Im actually more curious about wood.

  • 3, 6, 10!!!! NICE PLAYING!!!!

  • #4 all the way.. its awesome.

  • #3, and #10 were my favorites. Can't wait to see which metal was which. Nina seemed especially comortable with #10. Perhaps it was her own? All sounded excellent though. Burkart makes incredible flutes and piccolos.

  • I will tell you that one of the flutes is my own, but I won't tell which one!

  • #10 was my favorite (sweet like sugar :)

  • i liked #10.

my flute has a solid silver head joint thingy, and its shiny and shiny things make me happy. hehe. yay for shiny flutes!

  • I liked flutes #7 and #10!

    By the way...great playing!!!

  • I've never been a connoisseur of classical flutes, I did used to play classical a little, but nowhere near enough to try to judge the different metals. Now, if they were wooden flutes, differences between blackwood, boxwood, mopane, cocus, rosewood, ebony, etc. I might have a chance. These are all so classical...But I think I like #'s 1, 2, and 10 the best.

  • WOW, they all sound great to me except #9, something about the high notes. My all around favorite after only listening once is #10 Thanks for all these videos... kc

  • Hello Nina, It is a fun test. To play so many great flutes in one visit. For me I prefer the sound of flutes #1 and #3. Did all of the flutes have the same bore?

  • Very good.

I like all flutes and the flute player.

I personally prefer the 14K with soldered tone holes, does not matter which it is... maybe number 10 ;-)

  • Hi:)

It all sounded good, but I like flute 10 best.

  • I liked flutes #1, #3, #8, and maybe #10. Out of those four flutes I think I like #3 the best. I vote for #3. I have no idea which metal is being used on these flutes, but I know that a solid silver flute has the best tone.

    John Axsom

  • Hiii!

I like all sound flutes!! xD

but if I have to choose! Flute #6!

    Best wishes.
