I was pretty good friends with Stevie Ray during the 80's in Austin - first met him when he played in the Cobra's. He was a very modest, beautiful guy. If you asked him, he wouldn't put himself in the same league with Jeff Beck. (I'm not saying he wasn't!) He was floating on a cloud about getting to jam with Beck. Beck is a legend for very real reasons. Unlike Stevie, who was firmly rooted in the blues, Beck is one of those guys who can do it all and has developed a style uniquely his own.
I saw their concert in Louisville, Ky. Beck openned. He was incredible, but after 30 minutes or so, he is only interesting to guitarists and enthusiasts. His show got monotonous. It's like listening to a guitar instructional CD. SRV blew him away because he had guitar prowess (maybe a little less godly?) but was just more entertaining to hear the songs crafted with the whole band in mind and vocals. The crowd reaction was proof that thousands of people agreed with me that night.
I'm not saying SRV was a better player - it's all subjective anyway - but, that one time at least, he owned Jeff Beck. Very few people from this planet can do such a thing.
No one ever sings the 2nd verse properly. Sure, Don Nix, (composer), & Freddy King,(original recording artist), each sing -slightly- different words, but no one else has come close to learning either version of the 2nd verse,(& a -lot- of guys have recorded it). Lazy bastards just use the song as an excuse to play solos.
I can't believe that I never bothered to see Stevie Ray Vaughn. I've seen Jeff Beck in one form or another three times, and me and my wife even had to leave halfway during one of the shows because he was playing so damn loud. But Stevie Ray? What an EPIC FUCK UP on my behalf. When I make it to heaven (?), I owe him a huge apology !
I play the blues myself but what Beck does with a guitar is something entirely different than what I do . Beck is doing things these days that are just out of hand
It does seem like Beck looks intimidated a bit, you know why? Because he said so in an interview. He said he thought that SRV could make sounds and hit multiple chords while also doing lead at the same time. I have seen both of them and Beck is a great player no doubt, but like he said himself..that guy isn't from our planet, he must be from planet guitar! Of course he is going to say that, but he meant it. Beck to me is too clinical. Too clean and proper, and he can't make 1 guitar sound like 2
@rrussell39 You should probably look up some more Jeff Beck then if you think he's "too clean and proper" because you have obviously never listened to Jeff.
@rrussell39 Srv cuts through the mix much better than jeff does, but this is just one song. And Beck really plays interesting stuff... Stevie is 'the blues" when jeff is only the very best in "british blues"... Excellent guys anyway!!
@rrussell39 Jeff Beck is an absolute brilliant guitar player in his own way. Too clean? Have you heard his songs from "Jeff?" Or "Who Else?" That's anything BUT clean and proper. He's extremely versatile and CAN be clean and proper, but trust me. I've seen him live. Even at 67 years old he's a flawlessly talented guitar player that no one can touch. Stevie is too, but on a different level.
Love Beck. One of the best. This style doesn't really display his awesome talent - much better-suited for SRV. That's the difference, SRV is tremendous playing what he played, but Beck is more of a player's player. Saw SRV twice and Beck many times. What a shame SRV isn't with us anymore.
I feel so fortunate to have seen them both seperately then on this tour together. Just effortless . Two BRILLIANT players just rocking it out and blowing all our minds in the process. As for MTV....It died when it tried to become the youth generation network. Totally lost touch with the concept of music television.
The "original' I was referencing was Jeff Beck's original version of the song.
In the Jeff Beck version there is piano and bass and other elements that are given some room and guitar while obviously prominent is not so heavy handed.
But heck, I guess what should I expect! Why go see Stevie Ray and Jeff Beck if not to see them wank it out! ...and yes maybe this was a tribute to the Freddie King version. I guess guitar solos just bore me nowadays!
I don't know the exact amps he was using at the time, but SRV is mostly to have used old tweed, brownface, and black face fender twins and supers. He also used Dumble amps.
I love that Jeff has someone else on stage who is an equally-great guitar player. You can see that he is so focused during his solo to perform. SRV definitely pushed him to play harder than normal, possibly ever.
There are several versions here. These guys would hate to hear us 'ranking' them, but this one sounds the other way around to me. Some versions go either way, but... all good stuff either way - 2 of the best that ever lived.
The intensity of both these guys is just phenomenal! The fun is hearing what's just around the corner, the next inventive lick and quirky combination from Beck, the storm of blues explosions from SRV. Awesome!
STANDARD BLUES is boring. Read before talking idiot. Peddling the same walking rhythms and shuffles that Albert King and Muddy Waters created is boring. Ever hear Hendrix play blues? Nobody plays blues like him. Hence why he's the best. And how old do you think I am?
@waylo4526 Not even close jackass. I'm guessing YOU'RE around 12 years old though. Why else would you use YOUR when it's supposed to be YOU'RE? See what I did there? Do that next time.

All you have to do is listen to what the other greats said about his playing. People like Clapton King be it BB or Albert Beck pretty much any blues player you can name who heard him play.
i'm not saying he didn't have a shit load of soul, its just that plenty of guitarists such as hendrix, page, gilmour and clapton had equal if not surpassing emotional connection with their music, you only feel it more with stevie cause he did play with tremendous speed. watch zeppelin's 'whole lotta love' from the song remains the same concert - page is makin love to that god damn guitar. same thing with clapton playing 'have you ever loved a woman'
