Sgt. Bilko-style lyrics, George Formby-style melody, over-exaggerated American accent, over-the-top synths, sounds like a true work of art to me. Who says all songs have to sound like yesterday and penny lane?
And as stupid as the song may be, damn is it catchy!
If this song was covered by Lady Gaga or some other current pop star right now, it would be a hit. The only about this song that does not fit the current trend in pop music is Paul McCartney's voice.
Sounds like one of the first techno sort of songs. While McCartney was bare bones and raw with tracks like 'That would be something', this is much more reliant on electric gadgetry, with two electric sort off intrumentals and crazy over-dubs of his voice. still a good song this, the only my sister actually likes by him. Strangely commercial, lol.
No,Im not telling that paul was the First to use these things. Yes,Kraftwerk was the main inspiration, but this has a sightly importance into electronic history also.
I'm surprised this song hasn't become a meme by now, especially with the press the new remasters were getting. That's certainly how I found out about his McCartney II stuff. It's the craziest thing Paul's done.
I let my friend listen to this song and he loves it.
@ramon19141 I don't know if Yoko Ono actually said that, but if she did, it's awfully self-serving and not at all fair. Actually, Lennon tended toward basic song-forms and old-fashioned pop and rock & roll in his own work--nothing wrong with that. But, while Lennon may have been the better lyricist, on whole, than McCartney, McCartney, on whole was the better melodist. They were each better working with the other than by themselves.
Just out of curiosity, i would love to hear this album "stripped down" the way Lennon's "Double Fantesy" was. because it almost Lennon was kinda inspired by the sound of this album. did you ever hear "Mccartney 2" and "Double Fantesy" back to back? it was almost asl Lennon and Mccartney was going in the same direction musicly.
I'm surprised Nirvana didn't cover this back in the day. The vocal phrasing and general drone matches their sound, plus the chorus chant would be TOTAL Nirvana. Crazy.
@derekhixon as a huge fan of electronic music i can say that this going unnoticed by many, many people for being made at the end of the SEVENTIES is a scandal. truly groundbreaking if you knew the direction electronic music would head in 10/15 years time.
For some reason this is one of my favorite McCartney songs. Let's be honest, it's not one of his best, but it is very catchy and sticks in your mind for a long time. I dig the bass in this song a lot.
