It's good that you're so aware societally and individually about why that Arab student might have been offended. These days, Arabs and Muslims are constantly bombarded with messages that they're all terrorists so of course she'd naturally assume that your example was referring to that stereotype. Good for you for quickly realizing what had happened and apologizing to her.
That student of yours may have been offended but you certainly shouldn't feel responsible. I'm willing to bet that girl goes around being constantly offended. You made a perfectly innocent statement and she construed it as racism. It is the choice she made. The filter threw which she sees the world. You see this very often with very angry people or very sad people. This girl has already made a decision as to how she will see anything that could be considered raciest
It's irritating how many comments reflect just the kind of colour-blindness John was describing. The line of thinking that "because it wouldn't be hurtful if I, a white person, was told that it can't be hurtful for anyone else" just reflects your privilege.
That was not being color blind. Most Western countries manufacture and possess more bombs than any other Arabic country. Did we get offended? No. It was just an example of how money can be used for a not-so-good intention. And of course, those offended have to play the racist card... Ridiculous. You know, sometimes it is good to be offended, it teaches something about yourself, but of course, only if you are willing to learn something about yourself. Some prefer playing the victim role.
@isreasontaboo Yes but how did you get the figure that "most muslims make bombs?" (Answer: you pulled it out of your ass). Christianity is also a terror cult and advocates slavery, violence against women and children and is responsible for dozens of times more deaths this century than Islam so....
No wonder she thought an innocent comment was racist---look at all the racist-racially insensitive comments just on this page---no wonder she felt confused-she probably gets mean looks and thoughtless comments and gestures all the time---
I've used the same example before to distinguish ethics. that young woman over reacted and took it personal and just wanted to stir shit up. political correctness is such a bore! she was projecting her racism and owes you an apology if you really want to mince words. unless of course you were holding a racist thought in your mind.then I applaud you but you weren't. she should have brought it up during class and see where that would have done.
why the F should he apologize?, just listening here I thought his reference to make bombs was like military industrial complex job or make bread food, for example. F that stupid student for disrespecting her teacher after class and having the balls to call him a racist! WTF? She was just creating reactive negativity nd he was falling for it, no apology required as far as i'm concerned, I would have told her to f off.
@cane443 The more I think about it the more it really ticks me off. Calling someone a raciest is on par with calling them a rapist. It has a stigma that sticks. The accused is guilty until proven innocent. That girl is going around calling people raciest at the drop of a hat and she should be ashamed of herself. The guy in the video talks about "not being colorblind." Treating people different on the basis of race IS RACISM. BTW Did the girl mention what race the bread makers represented?
She has been programed. You don't need to be sensitive. Political correctness is proving to be nothing more than another control mechanism. It will be our downfall. It only reinforces division by constant self enforced scrutiny of ones own thoughts regarding divisions of race, sexual orientation, religion, sports team, favorite color etc. Where does it stop? The best way to deal with divisions such as race is to ignore it. 3 generations and racism would be history.
Mislabelled, but I don't trust WikiLeaks because anything that really was leaking such sensitive information would not recieve so much media attention. I wouldn't be surprised if they planned on using it as an excuse to curtail the free speech on the internet.
I don't follow the student's logic...or John's, in taking blame for something that was not offensive. The student "took" offense when there was no direct or even indirect offense. I would have been offended had I been the instructor. Did you notice that John said he apologized to her deeply when she walked up and made her accusation? I thought it was significant that he didn't even ask her to explain before he apologized. Very often young students are too sensitive...it's called immaturity.

@unopinionated I might suggest that you watch the interview in its entirety ...he indicated that a business' profits could be used for ethical or unethical purposes...he then went on to say that he then said that the profits could be used for purchasing bread or bombs...as an ILLUSTRATION of the unethical vs ethical purposes to which money can be put. By his own admission, the student thought he was saying that she could buy bombs or bread...she was wrong.
Totally agree. I don't think its colour blind I think its objective truth being misinterpreted. yet being able to empathise is way more important anywayz
@unopinionated the definition of "racism" is the following:
rac·ism [rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA
–noun
1.
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.
a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3.
hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
@unopinionated What he said didn't in any way imply any of the things in the definition. now, what I DO wonder is did she misinterpret his statement because after all she is not a native English speaker....
Saying "You can go into business to make bombs or you can go into business to bake bread" was not a racist comment. No, I'm not Middle Eastern, but not matter what your replace bombs in your sentence, anyone sensitive about their culture can take offense. In this age of hyper-PCism, it's ridiculous how we censor ourselves. Your student is hypersensitive and needs to address her own issues. I know many Middle Easterns and would never think of any of them making bombs. I know many more Caucasian..
there was nothing racist at all what he said to that student...racist means to hate a whole race...that and the word love are the 2 most abused words in the English language today
@rowleyparks He thinks he was insensitive for some reason because you're not supposed to mention bombs around people of middle eastern descent b/c of terrorism. It's ridiculous and in fact, after this realization he is more racist than before since he is now advocating for treating people differently based upon their skin color. Oh the irony. Thank you, collectivism.
collectivism? Actually in a collectivist culture you would see more emphasis on the role of the family and how one's actions affect it. Issues of racism and PC like this one would fall by the wayside. Or is collectivism just some buzz word you heard on Fox News?
@plaidchuck Your prejudice assumptions fall short about my terminology though I think we've found some common ground in our disdain for Fox News. Does it go further to all major "media" trash piles? I'm using collectivism as a pejorative term for anti-individual since in those societies the individual is nothing more than a cog in a machine which is what a major side effect of cultural sensitivity: Dismissal of people as individuals in lieu of a member of a group.
I can't tell you how astoundingly antagonizing it is to continually see the slap-on-the-wrist sentences, if any, of a Lindsay Lohan and a Paris Hilton for their repeated offenses, when we as African Americans personally know of the many a black male lives that have been systematically ruined after having been IMPRISONED for FAR LESS offenses, thanks to the great American "justice system".
Aren't we supposed to be blind to these things? This is garbage, John. There is no institutionalize racism. It's a socio-economic issue. If you have money and are valued in society you're more likely to be given a break or you won't commit crimes and potentially sacrifice what you have for more (outliers excluded here). But to make an argument like this about being racially sensitive is the reason there is still bigotry in this world. It continues to get shoved in ppl's faces causing resentment.
@ZombieX13 That's not true, white people i know personally have gotten away with assaults, and theft while black people and mexicans i also personally know have gotten jail time for assault and theft in the same degree under the same conditions. If you open your eyes and pay attention it will become obvious to you.
@jrdudedj right.. everything was exactly the same in all those circumstances... I totally believe that. Stop being so simple. The statistics show that the biggest reason for crime is socio-economic reasons. People commit more crimes when (specifically in assaults) their economic situation is low. Race has very little to do with it.. some but very little. When you grow up in a community that is predisposed to violence and crime, you will breed more violent populations. Racism is BS.
@ZombieX13 For centuries up until today, what *race* of people has been *most* maligned and disenfranchised in this country institutionally? The obvious answer to that question pretty much has everything to do with racism, including the race of people most found at the bottom of the socio economic ladder.
@omightyisis Since the civil rights movement in the USA, racism has been pushed into the shadows. It's no longer the socially acceptable to be racist and the irony is that instead of promoting individualism to get away from the stereotypes, we now put an even stronger emphasis on grouping people as a collective for sensitivity purposes which does nothing but cause racism to flourish by telling people they are of a certain group with all the stereotypes included. Such irony.
@ZombieX13 Just because it may seem to you as though gross racism has been pushed into the shadows doesn't mean that it has discontinued. I assure you it has not; I mean let's not be silly. To that end, that which is real as rain has less to do with stereotyping or grouping than it does with what's looking at you dead in your face ...that is if you're conscious and I don't know that a zombie X 13 ever would be.
@omi Of course racism hasn't disappeared. it cant until we lobotomize everyone. Tribalism is hardwired. That intuition unfortunately is being institutionalized again with this bullshit about cultural sensitivity. And yes I know exactly what racism feels like- I'm white. I'm discriminated against all the time for it but I was raised to not care about race, so it doesn't bother me. Please try making your points a little less ambiguously. its not witty and Id like to have a real conversation here.
@ZombieX13 I didn't say that crimes don't go up due to socio-economic reasons. I said there are white people getting away with crimes that black people go to prison for. It's a FACT. If you go look in a prison, theres your damn proof. It doesn't matter if you grow up in Tenino Washington, or New York City. In both areas black people are charged for crimes that while people get away with. All the time.
@jrdudedj ....and? Prosecution of those on the lower socia-economic scale occurs more because of the higher amounts of crime in those areas. Government cracks down on those areas more than affluent because of the differing crime rates. Plus you can take more things from affluent people than putting them in jail. Then you have the violence as well. Bottom line, race isn't a primary factor. There are plenty of other reasons ahead of it. Do your research. Your ambiguous anecdotes mean nothing.
@ZombieX13 It doesn't matter what excuses you make, and it doesn't matter if you're vocabular and grammar is of a old "wisdom" wanna be man. Racism is one of the main reasons for black people being arrested. White people in the same nighborhoods have always gotten away with more than the black people. It's common knowledge. Racism may get pushed under the rug by the news, and the law, but it's still here, and it's still one of the MAIN reasons for black people sitting in prison half there lifes.
@jrdudedj Well let's just go with your faulty logic/lies for a minute. That last sentence is wrong anyway. The reason anyone goes to prison is because they committed a crime. As you said before, white people get away with crimes that both HAVE committed. The alleged racism comes in by giving the white person a benefit, not that the black person is being discriminated against. So really it's a white privilege. Learn your own arguments first before puking up logical fallacy Goodbye.
Thank-you Dr. John for the humble perspective. I feel that if we all could see that our actions had an affect on our lives, things would be more clearly thaught out.
I wonder if both dances can be the same. Even as a kid I was always building things and playing with machines and electricity. I became a mechanic and now I fix transit buses. I help people get where they need to go. Whenever I'm working with machinery I'm almost always happy, and it pays well too. I don't have any great mission to reshape the world though. I wrote it off as a lost cause about 20 years ago. I settle for making the small part of the world that I can influence, a better place.
@vention4wh I raised my children with the belief that if they love what they do, don't worry about the money. To go work hating it everyday there is no amount of money worth it. Having both dances be the same is a great blessing.
Its only one dance... Its this joke of a system we live in that has made them separate. Creativity in our survival is the true dance... What we have now is a horrible joke of an existence for most... The sad part is that many actually like it.

@moviedude22 Yes! What's this got to do with Wikileaks? But an interesting video.

@vention4wh Of course they can. If you love what you do and it is putting food on the table then you have a good thing going.
