i agree, you can never compare an original with that of a remix, especially a song like this(Sailing) Avants Remix is nice.. however I have so much respect for this writer and his Song truly a classic.

The direct comparison, leaving out the fact that one is a live recording with inferior sound quality and the other is a heavily produced and polished studio mix, and leaving out that one guy is the writer and creator of the song that has stood the test of time enough for a remake all these years later, I still think Christopher Cross's version gives me a sense of peace and longing that is missing in the remake. Avant's is respectfully beautiful but it wouldn't really capture my attention

@Ezkey, you're right. I have Chris Cross' greatest hits CD and I would say maybe 3 decent trax. The statement I made was very general. Most of the time the original is better but there are always exceptions, I just don't think Avant's track is. You wanna hear a good remake? Anthony David remade Level 42's "There something about you" and I think it's a better remake than this one.

Christopher Cross's Sailing is a classic... His innocence and the time that this song came out are classic. He will always be the best... however.... Avant did the best cover of this song that I have ever heard. He brought this awesome song to a whole new generation... Great job Avant. When this came out back in the days it was cool, I never turned away from it. But today's mix by Avant is much better to me because it is more fuller and soulful. A very beautiful song. Props to Christopher Cross but great choice by Avant and he turned it into something even more beautiful, in fact he put his own signature on it. Thanks for posting it

This is a tough call. For me it is too hard to say which version of this song is better. A well written song will always sound good when it is done by quality performers like Avant and Christopher Cross. Only a coin flip can make me answer this question.

I'm from the era of the original by Cross who is incredible but Avant did a spectacular job remaking it. Instead of taking from the song and trying to make it his own , he added to it and succeeded in leaving his mark on it. I enjoy both versions! They should perform it together!

I enjoy them both, and not everyone can take a remake and keep it at number 1(this has that potential). Even tho Avant put his on signature on it,. "Sailing" brings back so many memories for me. Losing my job, sitting by the dock of the bay .... watching all the sail boats go by, eating fish and chips by the seaside, dipping calamari rings in tartare sauce, sipping on a glass of wine watching the boats sail by ..... on a Monday afternoon when everybody is working ... taking it easy while other people bust their ass for half a dime. BOTH versions are good of this song.

I've actually never heard this song until today.  I had just gotten home from my bf's house and I quickly flipped through the stations as I was getting out of the car and on th last station in my list I heard this song (Avant's Version) and I have to say it made me pause, listen and sit back in my seat, I thought it was so beautiful. I believe that "Avant" is the perfect singer to 're-make' (not remix) this song, but I could never give more credit to the re-maker of a song because he doesn't capture the essence that I felt from the original version. (I love them both though, but Christopher Cross is my favorite. My friends give me hell on this because of the r&b feel that Avant put on it and they think it is better, but I see no color in music....)
