I like freestyle and I like the new rules. They favor finesse and positioning over aimless assaults and offer a good balance of defense and offense. Folkstyle is boring....down position is ridiculously predictable. And stalling is too subjective. Wrestling is never going to be a big money maker, so those who complain that the new rules don't offer a big enough spectacle need to think about that. And besides, most of us in Europe generally find USA folkstyle uninteresting.
Nice post. I don't pretend to know all the rules but they seem very fair. Freestyle wrestling is done world wide so really folkstyle is what it is. our sport in the states
The current freestyle rules make for unbelievable boring contests and rewards stalling. Put in a set of rules that rewards going after the big scores and freestyle will be exciting to watch again. What other sport in a sudden death situation sets it up so that one guy has a 90 percent better chance of winning the situation and deciding the period and match? That ridiculous ball grab and leg clinch to decide the period does not in any way decide who is the better wrestler.

Paulson was stalling and not rewarded. Kind of blows your theory. The rules are set up the same for both wrestlers. Neither got in on a takedown and Schlatter won.
Having 4 balls is definitely better than 2 and definitely helps when it comes to making a world team. Paulson had 0 balls in 2 straight matches...that's not going to help your chances of making the team. Not even when you attempt a superman duckunder from the edge of the Potomac river.
These guys make me miss Ben Askren
