  • Great Thank You.

  • great video. you got a new subscriber

  • Honestly how the hell do you keep the bass hand going and incorporate it with the right hand!?! I've been jamming piano for almost three years and i never learned how to do this. I don't understand mentally and I'm not capable physically to do this and it is really irritating. All i can do is keep 4/4 timed bass in blocked chords.

  • @mechflesh Ahahaha - good question! There's a really good exercise you can do - give me a few days, and I'll make a short vid on it :)

  • Thanks for these great vids what would be the most common key signatures used is there any need to learn them all Regards Colin

  • that was a FANTASTIC take... and you sounded a bit like Doctor Who too ! so that made it a bit easier!.......Come along Pond!

  • hahaha oh no no i just meant like rootless voicings ive heard him use? To practice this techinique do you recommend (for a beginner) practising a blues or rhythm changes using the stride style?

  • @chizzadbc Ah, right, yes - sorry, misunderstood! Yes, rootless voicings work very well on the off-beats, though you need a strong root at the start of the bar on beat one, at least in classic stride. When you're getting started, do what feels comfortable in the right - which probably means starting with rhythm changes until your left hand is really secure down that end of the piano :)

  • very nice! So with the left hand are you play the root and then jumping up the octave and playing the chord? Does this work with Bill evans type voicings? (spec at faster tempos, im a drummer so i cant play very fast yet!)

  • @chizzadbc You've got it - actually, there's another stride piano video uploading as I write :) Hmmm - Evans wasn't massively into stride (it's more a technique of early jazz), but it keeps cropping up in all kinds of jazz playing.

  • You move to fast and understanding you turns me off,

  • @billhiltonbiz thanks for answering! i'll buy the book ASAP

btw, you have the best piano tutorials on tube and a very cool accent

  • i cant play the piano fast enough with my left hand. i dont have any trouble with the right its just playing the bass notes and chords with my left hand that really slows me down. im probably using the wrong technique but do you have any pointers for me? thanks

  • @skullboy1990 Stride is just a technique that needs a lot of practice to nail the accuracy on the piano keyboard - I'll do another tutorial on it soon, so watch this space :)

  • @billhiltonbiz thanks i will, ive already subscribed to your channel!

  • I love the muddy part...then you really jam... fun.

  • Great video

  • good stuff!

  • Great video man, gave me more help in 6 minutes than my piano teacher has done in 6 years!

  • In E FLAT sorry ***

  • @Solcius123123 No worries - believe me, I've hit plenty of D flats when I should have been in E flat. Glad it was helpful :)

  • Thank you so much for your blue moon bass line !!!! It's amazing for improving in D FLAT !!!!

  • really appreciate this video man, btw did u make a video about thickening the melody with harmony in the right hand?

  • Getting trapped in stride.....That's my problem and when I've played with a band or along with someone on youtube, I tend to be in my own rhythm and screw everything up. Some people say that I play like I'm in a saloon in an old western movie. I wish I could play more of a piano bar style.

  • @criss1956 Yep, it's a habit that takes a lot of breaking. When you're playing by yourself you naturally want to create rhythm, and because stride and similar left hand styles are so repetitive they really get "locked in" in your head. The only answer is to practise hard the other way!

  • I remember my father used to play standards like this in the 50's and it was really lovely.

  • How do you play improv chords in the right hand? if that makes any sense

  • @MrCry1ngReaper Now there's a big question ;)

Basically, it's a combination of improvising a simple lined "thickened" with chords and using the shapes of the chords themselves to create the line. I'm aware that sounds like complete gobbledegook, so when I get some time at the weekend I'll make a vid to explain.

  • Im seeing, thank You very much, Its useful

  • @helmusico Glad you liked it :)
