To say eating is a small part of it is ignorant to say the least. If you eat crap you will look like crap, simple as that. If you are not putting nutrients into your body that your body can process for building/rebuilding muscle tissue then guess what, you wont build anything. @buletyes Sure. Remember to total up your daily calories. You need to know how much you're eating each day. Calories are like money. That way if you haven't lost weight after a few weeks you'll know you're either eating too much or not walking enough.
This is said weird. The best foods in the world are not going to pack on muscle. Then again, lifting heavy and eating ice wont work either. Eating definitely dictates how you look. So diet over the gym. I do agree in the sense that diet wont build slabs of muscle. The guy said it funny IMO.

I think the 90: 10 ratio was refering to weight loss and not perfomance. I think that ratio is about right. Of course losing weight will not make you an athlete! And with out having the proper genetics training will not either.

@Scrungie1 Not true, they sell supplements and shakes and such at the gym which they want you to buy too. So, they'll tell you that both are important which happens to be true.
@dodge69874 i dont know about your gym but the one i go to would make hardly any money from the supplements they sell. Believe it or not gyms make money from membership fees not supplement sales lol.
Again, no gym would say 90% of weight loss is diet because they would lose money.
of course both are important which is true, but no way will they say only 10% is workout unless they want to fail as a business.
its about how many calories in and how many calories out. if you put in more than your body uses along with working out..then you will be overweight...if you use more than you consume then you wont be. it does matter to some extent where you get those calories from...but in the long run if you consume more calories from healthiest food out there and you dont burn them...you gain weight...probably fat
I agree with you Steve it's 90-10. Diet does help of course, eating corn chips and drinking beer are obviously bad diet choices. But I have just reading regular foods such as rice, fish bread and the usually foods. have gone from 305lbs to around 240lbs. Because I do 70-80 minutes of cardio, plus 30 minutes of weights. Instead of driving to work, or catching the bus I run to and from work. Very low tech but very effective. But yes 90% exercise 10% diet.
i eat everything but i lose weight when needed, i like high protein, i buy low or no fat mayonaise and even use it for whoppers cutting tons of calories and useless fat that way. i would at least want something tasty as fat free mayo tastes exactly the same. i also dont drink soda with fast food, and i eat fruits and vegetables, i take into account what i eat also effects muscle building.
Holy shit man! What you are saying would scare anyone with any kind of medical background. High calorie and highly processed foods will kill you no matter how much you can lift. Treat exersise and diet both as equaly important for you're health and don't worry about made up stats on which is better. You might look good but if this is you're idea of healthy you're cholesterol and you're chances of heart problems are going to cause you trouble in the future bud.
Listen, LIFE COACH, I'm talking about making realistic gradual changes to improve somebody's health. I know too many health nuts who eat healthy but are still fat and out of shape. And the average personal is hardly going to get to 4-8% body fat. NOBODY gets there with out extreme dieting and tons of cardio. And you're hardly what I would call muscular or ripped "Big Guy!" Why don't you stick to helping your cients.
and if this is true then show me before and after pics of clients that took this approach.. workout hard and eat mcdonalds or whatever they wanted that were not a hardgainer and over the age of 24.. ... your in decent shape but there is no way in the world you get your body to 4-8% bodyfat eating crap.. no way..
@mmlacerte Horrible education mmlacerte. I was stunned when I clicked on your site and saw videos on you doing 2 inch leg presses, and a chest workout of push ups and cable crossovers (and variations of it). I don't know what to say to you.
Its very sad what you are teaching people that they can eat this way while this country is geting fatter because of one reason.. what they are putting in their bodies.. families living off of fast food.. hey kid go out and run a mile when you get back i have a bigmac for you.. if your going to teach people something teach them that food is fuel and healthy food is what keeps us feeling great, not a whole pizza and fries. Working out is important.. but it starts with the fuel you put in our body
Interesting question and one that I've never quite understood the answer to. I'm going to go with Steve on this one. When used to box competitively, I had no understanding of a healthy lifestyle; ate and drank any and everything including McDonalds, fried chicken and beer. Today I have a vast understanding of healthy foods and nutrition but I'm not nearly as active as I was as a competitive boxer. I eat great and workout regularly for the most part. I was much lighter and leaner then.
If you DON'T workout, and eat impeccably; your body isn't going to grow or get "better"
You have to give your body a reason to grow, to adapt.
This I agree with. Without working out, eating well isn't very effective.
However, IF you workout, THEN diet is more important than exercise. Because if you don't eat right your body won't BE ABLE to adapt because it doesn't have the proper resources to do so.
In this situation, I think it's 70% diet, 30% exercise
you can not expect to lose weight if you eat for example 2000 calories a day and burn 0 of them through exercise. it has been proven that there needs to be a balance. a combination of eating the right nutrient dense foods in hand with a good amount of exercise like cardio will make you lose weight.
Diet is 70% , Think about a 24 hour day.. You workout 1-2 hours per day , what do you do with the rest of the time.. EAT.. you eat wrong you get fat unless genetically you were born skinny (hardgainer). People listen to me EAT RIGHT
Why are we getting fatter as a nation? Its simple because peopel are eating worse.. You eat bad you get fatter.. I train my clients harder then most trainers in the world.. Many i train like top athletes. If they dont eat right they will never get their bodyfat low enough or lose the extyra weight.. I have been featured in magazines such as muscle and fitness , you dont eat right you dont lose the extra bodyfat.
if you took twin brothers and one barely worked out but ate really clean and the other brother lifted weights like an animal but ate only pizza and soda..the guy lifting all the time would have more muscle and would look better..I will go with what the guy in this video says....
Sorry, but no it isn't. You can lose weight without eating better, if you workout. You can build muscle without eating well, if you work out. You can improve your cardiovascular without eating well, if you work out.
It is important BUT nutrition alone won't improve you're body's performance. And you can get a better body just from xercise. But I like 10-15 % fat 35-40-% protein and 40-45% carbs.
I ate an egg white in the morning...and then I had about 10 green grapes then I worked out for 2 hours (burnt 630 calories on the treadmill)after I was done I felt light headed and dizzy and weak...I now ate tuna salad and 3 pieces of toast with peanut butter and jam to see if that will make me feel better...I do now...little headache and sleepy! is that too un healthy to do what I did? should I be eating more before a workout?
yes its unhealth....You need to feed your body properly and especially in the morning. Even if you want to lose the weight, you must feed your body properly in the morning. Egg white and 10 grapes? thats like 100-150 calories....You should eat like 300-500 calories breakfast depending on your diet.
i disagree with you 100%. my brother is the same way. Eats whatever he wants and works out religously (about an hour of running and about 20 mins of strength training + his soccer practices for 3 hours) since off of his diet he has gained about 20 pounds. there is no way you can possible tell people that eating doesn't matter.
depending on how fat you are it would vary, say you want to lose 30-60lbs or more, cardio 30%, weights 60%, diet 10% and eating right at that. more vegetables, 4-6 meals, vitamins, fiber, all that good stuff.
if your skinny, u want to eat more and work out just as much to fuel your body and absorb proteins
it'll be expensive, but everything thats good for you is.
fucking spot on - excuse my lang - people need this info - its hard to tell people this when your not a certified trainer - they dont listen - even if you know what your talking about - then they go pay boockoo bucks at the gym for a trainer that may feed them a bunch of false information.
Steve is absolutely right, what you do in the gym is what makes your muscles grow, not the food. period. im living proof that you can eat crappy food, and have a great body because you hit the gym with alot of intensity/heavy weight. I may not be as 'healthy' as the guy eating a clean diet, but damned if i dont look just as good if not better. Keep up the good work steve, I like how you tell it like it is and go against the grain, im glad somebody has enough balls to tell the truth for once.
also remember food is fuel, so eating right, is what he means by eating anything. you must balance your fats and carbs and proteins, particularly if you want to gain muscle, high protein diets are best for it as you increase the weights on your workout
Eating does not effect your bodys performance? what the hell are you talking about of course it does. Eating and training go hand in hand. You cant expect to get the best results if you dont eat properly.
umm...because todays men and women aren't as active as we were back in the old days when we hunted our food and especially since market advertising and brand name junk food rules the industry. so eat means eat vegetables, meats and carbs, reduce fats i.e. junk food but do eat fatty meats like beef, its totally safe in moderation.
Training can do this much and dieting can do this much . You can't say one is more important than the other , that is for sure. You can get healthier by dieting and you can get healthier by lifting. Combine both of them and you can get better results.
Stupid. Training is one thing dieting is a different thing. These 2 interact. If you do both right , you can have a killer body. If you do diet wrong you have to ajust your training and maybe you will se the same results. And this ashole tells me you can't eat your way into the olympic team, well you can't train yourself into the olympic team without a good diet either. Fucking retard! And there are other factors you know!
i want to bring up a hypothetical question. if person a eats a poor diet of junk food, and person be eats a healthy balanced diet, and neither workout, cant we agree that person b would have a better body then person a? that not to say it would make you super fit or anything to that degree but would you not agree that person b has a healthier body? if so wouldnt this proove proper nutrition plays a vital role in the health of your body? please comment, im curious what others think of this
i have to disagree. yes it is mostly stressing your body to adapt, but proper nutrition is a big part as well. you say what you eat doesnt really matter, would this apply to if you only ate cupcakes and pies and similar junk food as the majority of your diet? proper nutrition and excercise well get you to your better body much faster then either alone, this is fact. so yes, it does matter what you eat.
this guy is absolutely right- its not 10% what u eat. You have to have a shitload of protein after you work out. Just working out doesnt do it. You have to have protein so that your body can create more muscle. So actually, you can't make big strength gains with just one or the other- you have to have both- just a little more important is the lifting.
hey my friend, ive read a lot about fitness and ive read that the average person doesnt need a shit load of protein at all, the typical american diet gives us most of the protein we need. dont forget that protein requires water, so to much may more easily dehydrate you, and unless your lookin for huge muscle gains, you dont need a shit load of protein, some, yes, shitload, no, not for the average person, least i think, please let me know your opinion on this
Steve has a "killer body". If he is so wrong then how come he is ripped with a 6 pack? Why would he give advice which is completly and utterly wrong when he himself is an example of his advice? He is giving FREE advice to thousands of people who are struggling. Lets see your "killer body" and see who is doing the right exercise then?!
I need a bit more info. Are you eating anything else? Doing any cardio? If you weren't currently gaining weight & the amount you're now eating is less than you normally eat, yes you will lose weight. And exercising will speed the process.
spread it out into 4-6 small meals throughout the day. that way your metabolism is constantly working and eating up fat instead of turning off and on just to eat up those two large meals.
Hello Steve, you are intense and I love it... you tell it like it is and get right to the point... I'v been looking for that since I played college ball... you sound like one of my many coaches over the years... keep it coming... I started at 472 lbs down to 399 lbs as of this AM goal is 200 lbs... "love'n my Body" Thanks for everything!!! ;)
Exercise releases endorphins which helps with your mood. Activity also speeds up metabolic processes very similar to revving a car engine making it run faster resulting in more energy generated. I also think there is the positive psychological factor of feeling like you've done something productive.
Don't push it until your knee is better. You'll probably have to stick with non-impact cardio such as biking & the elliptical trainer until your knee is better. When doing either try not to completely straighten or bend the knee. This will put less pressure on it until it heals. Once your knee is better you should be able to resume normal training. You probably can still weight train upper body just be care about planting your feet for stability since this will put pressure on the knee.
It's 50% one, 50% the other. It is not 90/10 as the "trainers" point out, and it is not 10/90 as you infer. It is a 50/50 split. If you eat crap and train religiously, you will see no results because it is a dirty bulk. You may gain muscle, but you will never see it.
Nice to see someone who knows what they're talking about. I hear personal trainers give the most bogus information to people who are paying them for their knowledge.
I just came across ur videos last week and i have watched them all!!! I think they are fantastic and u have really cleared up a lot of stuff in my head and totally simplified the whole weight loss thing! Just want to say thanks for all ur tips... xxx
Okay, here's a strange thing. Last week I didn't get to exercise at all (sort of crashed a bit). When I weighed myself at the start of this week, I'd actually maintained the same basic level of weight loss. What does that mean? Does that mean that I haven't been working out hard enough before and that most of my weight loss so far as been due to diet? Help!
If I understand, you didn't workout and therefore didn't lose weight. For weight loss to occur or continue, a calorie deficit needs to be created either my exercise and or diet.
i know im late, but let me suggest this, im betting even though you didint work out for a week but still lost your usual weight as usual is because you still have the same muscle mass as the previous week so your metobolism is still raised and burning more calories, dont workout for a month and you will most likely experiance loosing less weight with each week and even gaining weight by the end of the month
Thanks Steve, this info really matches up with what my trainer tells me. We hardly ever talk about "what" I eat,but he spends a lot of time helping me understand how the different activities he has me do either burn caories or fat or builds muscle most effectively and I am getting good results.
Sounds to me like these personal trainers want to blame the no loss of fat on their customers and not their lack of training them correctly. Thanks again Steve.
wow, i just heard about that 90%,10% thing from a friend(who is a personal traniner) just this past wednesday. however, i lost 4 pounds over a period of 2 month just by eating a healthy diet. i hardly exercised because of school.... how is this so?
Walking, running and jugging also counts into exercise. If you will spend 2 months just sleeping and without moving then you wount lose weight with the best diet in the world.
Well, 4 pounds over 2 months isn't much. If you were working out, you could comfortably lose 2 pounds a week...so in 2 months you could've lost 16 pounds.
thanks for the reply guys. but i have another question. if i eat 5,000 calories each day for 2 days, will the excess appear on the scale on the third day? what if i eat 10,000 calories just in 1 day and go back to my normal eating habits.. will the excess weight eventually come right off.. say in a few days?
I know from experience that I can eat within my calorie range all i want but i won't lose weight unless i workout. Use it or lose it. Its as simple as that!
Probably 70 diet/30 exercise. Very difficult to get a ripped body eating macdonalds every day.

its about how many calories in and how many calories out. if you put in more than your body uses along with working out..then you will be overweight...if you use more than you consume then you wont be. it does matter to some extent where you get those calories from...but in the long run if you consume more calories from healthiest food out there and you dont burn them...you gain weight...probably fat

Motownbrother 2 years ago
i eat everything but i lose weight when needed, i like high protein, i buy low or no fat mayonaise and even use it for whoppers cutting tons of calories and useless fat that way. i would at least want something tasty as fat free mayo tastes exactly the same. i also dont drink soda with fast food, and i eat fruits and vegetables, i take into account what i eat also effects muscle building.

Working out is important.. but it starts with the fuel you put in our body
mmlacerte 2 years ago
Interesting question and one that I've never quite understood the answer to. I'm going to go with Steve on this one. When used to box competitively, I had no understanding of a healthy lifestyle; ate and drank any and everything including McDonalds, fried chicken and beer. Today I have a vast understanding of healthy foods and nutrition but I'm not nearly as active as I was as a competitive boxer. I eat great and workout regularly for the most part. I was much lighter and leaner then.

when working out people eat too much and take all those supplements(not needed) exercise eat right (quality over quantity)
hitman12 2 years ago
True, but false at the same time.
In this situation, I think it's 70% diet, 30% exercise

you can not expect to lose weight if you eat for example 2000 calories a day and burn 0 of them through exercise. it has been proven that there needs to be a balance. a combination of eating the right nutrient dense foods in hand with a good amount of exercise like cardio will make you lose weight.
munoz1051c 2 years ago
Arnold Schwarzenegger said that "Abs are made in the kitchen." Good enough proof for me.
HighOnMyLife 2 years ago
Diet is 70% , Think about a 24 hour day.. You workout 1-2 hours per day , what do you do with the rest of the time.. EAT.. you eat wrong you get fat unless genetically you were born skinny (hardgainer). People listen to me EAT RIGHT
mmlacerte 2 years ago
Why are we getting fatter as a nation? Its simple because peopel are eating worse.. You eat bad you get fatter.. I train my clients harder then most trainers in the world.. Many i train like top athletes. If they dont eat right they will never get their bodyfat low enough or lose the extyra weight.. I have been featured in magazines such as muscle and fitness , you dont eat right you dont lose the extra bodyfat.
mmlacerte 2 years ago
if you took twin brothers and one barely worked out but ate really clean and the other brother lifted weights like an animal but ate only pizza and soda..the guy lifting all the time would have more muscle and would look better..I will go with what the guy in this video says....
collin355 2 years ago
Sorry, but no it isn't. You can lose weight without eating better, if you workout. You can build muscle without eating well, if you work out. You can improve your cardiovascular without eating well, if you work out.

Except when you want to burn off 100 calories. You can sit around and wait for over 90 minutes OR you can take a 15 minute walk.

It is important BUT nutrition alone won't improve you're body's performance. And you can get a better body just from xercise. But I like 10-15 % fat 35-40-% protein and 40-45% carbs.

Hey...can someone help me?
I ate an egg white in the morning...and then I had about 10 green grapes then I worked out for 2 hours (burnt 630 calories on the treadmill)after I was done I felt light headed and dizzy and weak...I now ate tuna salad and 3 pieces of toast with peanut butter and jam to see if that will make me feel better...I do now...little headache and sleepy! is that too un healthy to do what I did? should I be eating more before a workout?
Sheenbean000 3 years ago
yes its unhealth....You need to feed your body properly and especially in the morning. Even if you want to lose the weight, you must feed your body properly in the morning. Egg white and 10 grapes? thats like 100-150 calories....You should eat like 300-500 calories breakfast depending on your diet.

CobraVegeta 4 years ago
fucking spot on - excuse my lang - people need this info - its hard to tell people this when your not a certified trainer - they dont listen - even if you know what your talking about - then they go pay boockoo bucks at the gym for a trainer that may feed them a bunch of false information.
Rhypes99 4 years ago
Steve is absolutely right, what you do in the gym is what makes your muscles grow, not the food. period. im living proof that you can eat crappy food, and have a great body because you hit the gym with alot of intensity/heavy weight. I may not be as 'healthy' as the guy eating a clean diet, but damned if i dont look just as good if not better. Keep up the good work steve, I like how you tell it like it is and go against the grain, im glad somebody has enough balls to tell the truth for once.
osucowboyy 4 years ago
also remember food is fuel, so eating right, is what he means by eating anything. you must balance your fats and carbs and proteins, particularly if you want to gain muscle, high protein diets are best for it as you increase the weights on your workout
CobraVegeta 4 years ago
Eating does not effect your bodys performance? what the hell are you talking about of course it does. Eating and training go hand in hand. You cant expect to get the best results if you dont eat properly.

Why eat low fat? We did not evolve to eat low fat. The Lipid Hypothesis is false
Look into Dr Uffe Ravnskov and Anthony Colpo.

umm...because todays men and women aren't as active as we were back in the old days when we hunted our food and especially since market advertising and brand name junk food rules the industry. so eat means eat vegetables, meats and carbs, reduce fats i.e. junk food but do eat fatty meats like beef, its totally safe in moderation.
CobraVegeta 4 years ago
Bullshit, and heres why
Good diet + bad training= Good results
Bad diet + good training = Little results
(good training + good diet = Best results)

Training can do this much and dieting can do this much . You can't say one is more important than the other , that is for sure. You can get healthier by dieting and you can get healthier by lifting. Combine both of them and you can get better results.
don7frye 4 years ago
And there are other factors you know!

i want to bring up a hypothetical question. if person a eats a poor diet of junk food, and person be eats a healthy balanced diet, and neither workout, cant we agree that person b would have a better body then person a? that not to say it would make you super fit or anything to that degree but would you not agree that person b has a healthier body? if so wouldnt this proove proper nutrition plays a vital role in the health of your body? please comment, im curious what others think of this
BRIANMOLLER 5 years ago
i have to disagree. yes it is mostly stressing your body to adapt, but proper nutrition is a big part as well. you say what you eat doesnt really matter, would this apply to if you only ate cupcakes and pies and similar junk food as the majority of your diet? proper nutrition and excercise well get you to your better body much faster then either alone, this is fact. so yes, it does matter what you eat.
BRIANMOLLER 5 years ago
this guy is absolutely right- its not 10% what u eat. You have to have a shitload of protein after you work out. Just working out doesnt do it. You have to have protein so that your body can create more muscle. So actually, you can't make big strength gains with just one or the other- you have to have both- just a little more important is the lifting.
delaura643 5 years ago
hey my friend, ive read a lot about fitness and ive read that the average person doesnt need a shit load of protein at all, the typical american diet gives us most of the protein we need. dont forget that protein requires water, so to much may more easily dehydrate you, and unless your lookin for huge muscle gains, you dont need a shit load of protein, some, yes, shitload, no, not for the average person, least i think, please let me know your opinion on this

I need a bit more info. Are you eating anything else? Doing any cardio? If you weren't currently gaining weight & the amount you're now eating is less than you normally eat, yes you will lose weight. And exercising will speed the process.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
spread it out into 4-6 small meals throughout the day. that way your metabolism is constantly working and eating up fat instead of turning off and on just to eat up those two large meals.

Exercise releases endorphins which helps with your mood. Activity also speeds up metabolic processes very similar to revving a car engine making it run faster resulting in more energy generated. I also think there is the positive psychological factor of feeling like you've done something productive.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
Don't push it until your knee is better. You'll probably have to stick with non-impact cardio such as biking & the elliptical trainer until your knee is better. When doing either try not to completely straighten or bend the knee. This will put less pressure on it until it heals. Once your knee is better you should be able to resume normal training. You probably can still weight train upper body just be care about planting your feet for stability since this will put pressure on the knee.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
It's 50% one, 50% the other. It is not 90/10 as the "trainers" point out, and it is not 10/90 as you infer. It is a 50/50 split. If you eat crap and train religiously, you will see no results because it is a dirty bulk. You may gain muscle, but you will never see it.
Eating is as important as lifting and visa versa.
joe4951 5 years ago
You can eat poorly and still have a good body. You cannot overeat and still have a good body. Big difference.

I think it more 50/50. Because you can train like a mad man,eat crap and not go know where.

Help!
mrmortonblogs 5 years ago
If I understand, you didn't workout and therefore didn't lose weight. For weight loss to occur or continue, a calorie deficit needs to be created either my exercise and or diet.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
Actually I didn't workout and still lost weight. The same averge weight loss that I've been doing this whole time per week (1-2 pounds).
mrmortonblogs 5 years ago
So a calorie defict was still created even though you didn't workout. That's great.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
i know im late, but let me suggest this, im betting even though you didint work out for a week but still lost your usual weight as usual is because you still have the same muscle mass as the previous week so your metobolism is still raised and burning more calories, dont workout for a month and you will most likely experiance loosing less weight with each week and even gaining weight by the end of the month
BRIANMOLLER 5 years ago
Thanks Steve, this info really matches up with what my trainer tells me. We hardly ever talk about "what" I eat,but he spends a lot of time helping me understand how the different activities he has me do either burn caories or fat or builds muscle most effectively and I am getting good results.

Walking, running and jugging also counts into exercise. If you will spend 2 months just sleeping and without moving then you wount lose weight with the best diet in the world.
Bohemists 5 years ago
You were probably taking in fewer calories with your healthier eating. But to firm the body and improve its performance you still need exercise.
BodyPerformanceTV 5 years ago
Well, 4 pounds over 2 months isn't much. If you were working out, you could comfortably lose 2 pounds a week...so in 2 months you could've lost 16 pounds.

thanks for the reply guys. but i have another question. if i eat 5,000 calories each day for 2 days, will the excess appear on the scale on the third day? what if i eat 10,000 calories just in 1 day and go back to my normal eating habits.. will the excess weight eventually come right off.. say in a few days?
