  • i like to know what is the sircuit of hydrogen maker

  • Caustic soda = Lye for those in the Western Hemisphere ;)

  • really kid? Alooooooooooomineeeeeeeeeeeum foil? caaaaaaaaawwwwwstic soda? Milliliters? WTF are you saying? NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND U!!!!!!!!!!

  • Adamantium Foil! Who are you? Wolverine?

  • just make or buy HCl and grab some aluminium foil....it's really easy Lol

  • How do you make caustic soda ?

  • clip your god damn dirty long ass nails you bloody fuck

  • whtn chemicals do u have?

  • @deathbyhippies what chemistry do u know? NaOH isn't a gas at ordinary temperatures!

  • MY GOD THAT FLAMING TORCH IS HUGE! ...oh those balloons were also nice....

  • We did the same thing in chemistry, but we used a magnesium strip instead of aluminium. We just did not get to blow it up at the end.

  • This creates not only hydrogen, but sodium hydroxide gas as well. don't be so naive as to think your just making hydrogen from this reaction, if you blew this shit up near someone the gas is CORROSIVE, and obviously not very pleasant to breathe in

  • @deathbyhippies No it does not. NaOH doesn't boil till over a thousand degrees. Nor does it sublime, or fume.

  • @rileyrileyrileyz al u min i um

  • Please be careful, we can't afford to lose any smart kids.

  • Friends in school called this the Works bomb ( because of the type of crain cleaner we use) and it was actually so popular the police had to patrol and look for people using them and arrest them!

  • get friends

  • dude so many people will take the piss out of you on youtube hate to say it but they will do some sound editing to give you a mono voice and only have your hands on camera

  • Al(OH)3 is what is left, and using that glass bottle is somewath dangerous.

Both solving the NaOH and adding the Alluminium create heath, and the bottle might crack, blowing corrosive hot NaOH all over you :P

  • Won't the H2 be contaminated with NaOH vapor?

  • next time wear glasses and gloves :D

  • Zinc works a lot better, much more reactive with acid.

  • al u min um

  • @rileyrileyrileyz two spellings and pronunciations are accepted: aluminum (mostly US) and aluminium (mostly UK)

  • would u lke some scones as well liv?

  • not to mention that that stuff is actually potent enough to eat thru your glass container

  • Be careful buddy. It's cool to be interested in science but if that bottle pops you could end up with Lye in your eyes. NaOH in the eyes would render you blind for life, no exaggeration. This is why chemists were protective eye-wear.

  • u can also use works toilet bowl cleaner which has hydroxide in it

  • i don't have baloon, can I use condome =)

  • ill send you sound fuse wire for free if u want

  • You can get away with using less water and less soda to get the same concentration :)

  • not all chemical reactions get hot, this is an exothermic reaction. Opposite is Endothermic

  • hydrogen is a cool gas to make those ballons that just go up too, and it's lightier than helium

  • Curious.. why the hell was u playing with Lye using ur bare hands?

  • will that work with draino gel quick i need to make a hydrogen rocket for school tomarrow

  • ah gotta love the british accent :D nice job

  • its getting alot warmer because NaOH + H2O is an exothermic reaction, meaning it will produce heat. at the rihgt mixture you would probely be able to make the water boil, causing to preasure the bottle and blow up the bottle, splashing a boiling corrosive base to the surroundings. wouldnt suggest doing it though as its highly dangerous and damaging to the enviroment around you if done outside.

  • where can i get caustic soda?

  • Talented kid. Hope he will retain his eyesight.

  • what's that fog on the window, that's not fog that's condensation. con den sation

  • i've done the electric virsion and i got lots of bubbles. positive is hydrogen and negative is oxygen.

  • ummm this works but wouldnt hydrolosis be easy just run a current into salt water and wala probably not as fast but its not as dangerous in terms of burning yourself

  • Yeah, but do it wrong and electrocution. You'd be wishing that you had just done this.

  • @BryanBeatsYouAll you have a point but there are easy precautins you can take like wearing rubber boots and gloves your more likeley to burn yourself than electrocution because to electicuit yourself youd have to stick a limb in there where as your method only needs you to knock the bottle over but its personal prefference i guess

  • its cannot electrocute you because in electrolysis you only use a small voltage with low amps, otherwise it wonr work funny enough. the voltage range is from 0.5-15 volts, an orsinary 1.5volt battery has plenty of power to do this, altho it would be much quicker to use those heavy duty 6volt torch batterys.

  • because its tainted with sodium

  • how? i made mine with magnesium and 5% acetic acid

  • i asked a major in chemistry what flame hydrogen burns with. he told me blue. mine burns with a orange flame. why

  • Hm. Could I potentially make a zeppelin and fill it up?

  • lol hindenburg, perhaps? paint it with thermite!

  • show us that is it light!

  • have you spilled sodium hydroxide on yourself

  • Ahh, yes i have. to be honest. I was carrying a solution of Sodium hydroxide and water to the sink. My dog barked and made me jump, thus spilling it. Luckily it spilt into the sink and i was able to wash my hands within seconds.

  • Lol that i neevr heard , you talking a load of cockney my fellow Dvaid?

  • That new to me , is thou talking a load of cockney my fellow Dave

  • @AHW214 I have intentionally poured conc sodium hydroxide on my arm.

It was for a school projekt about chemical burns, treatments and such.

Had one spot that was on for 2secs, one that was 10secs, one 20secs and one 3 minutes.

Needless to say all of them hurt, and the 3min one left a quite nasty scar.

  • @AHW214 All it really does is it makes your skin really slippery as your skin oil is turned to soap. Normal soap and water will get it off but it takes some work. It's best if you have some vinegar handy. ;)

  • If you want a more vigorous reaction try it with Potassium Hydroxide rather than Sodium Hydroxide.

  • i dont get it. its barely even explosive. why wood any1 make an explosive with this?

  • hmm, for educational purposes only and you just used it for explosions

  • aluminium foil

  • Your video of how to make hidrogen is very intresting! Thanks for it

  • this is called a ''hindenberg bomb'' (the balloon with hydrogen thing) in anarchist cookbook, you can just take a bottle, put sodium hydroxide (or any other strongs hydroxide, fx. potassium hydroxide) then make it liquid, dont fill the bottle with the water about 1/6 of the bottle should contain sodium hydroxide solution, put al foil in, close and run you can also put the bottle near some fire for a fireball when it explodes.. REALLY LOUD!

  • you can face charges of up to 2-10 years in jail for that. happened to some kids in my neighborhood, so i dont do that anymore.

  • so.... you can get 2-10 years in prison for making a hydrogen balloon bomb?! D= well that sounds unreal.. or maybe if you make it in very large quanity :S

  • well, in my town they take it as a terrorist threat or 'bomb making' thought there is no real combustion, just gas buildup. but theyre really serious.

  • haha ^^ always the words ''terrorist/terrorism'' or ''bomb'' i hate BOMB it sounds so idiotic -.-* how the fuck would a terrorist come with a 'bomb' filled with hydrogen.. in his fucking pocket and blow up a whole building? yea impossible!! D=< anyways.. TATP is really easy to make.. and i now believe 1 gram can fuck a hand.. i just took about 0.005 gram of this shit then confined in some pocket like al foil.. lighted *BANG* damn i was so scared and still am that my mom heard it! :O

  • lol im gonna try this:P its legal u no

  • educational uses only my ass!!!! lol im makin a bomb >:]

  • and why i can't use baking soda

  • that makes CO2

  • So I can polute our enivorement even more?! Man thats good idea! I will do it right away to lought at eco hippies.

  • ok. you can live in the hell that earth will become because of you and your pollution, while we, the eco hippies, colonize mars.

  • p.s. learn to spell.

  • yes because hydrogen is a greenhouse gas?

    lmao so many stupid comments

  • and wheres the C in any of the reactants?

  • i was replying to mikamk123. reacting baking soda and vinegar creates CO2, not hydrogen.

  • where you get that caustic soda (sodium hydroside)

  • oven cleaner

  • lol dude, 12 year old british kids make the best videos regarding explosives and bombs.

Aluminium hahah u say that funny

  • I did the same thing when I was as young as you :] fill up a baloon stick a fuse to it and let it float over the neighbours :]

  • Lol, i had that idea. I was going to make a fuse out of Sodium Chlorate and sugar. Never got the hang of it, then i tried making rockets. Didn't work well with Sodium Chlorate so i got Potassium nitrate, then tried BP, so i got C and S, the fountains so i got AL then flash powder so i got MgAl, then Fe2O3 as a catalyst. Then visco fuse somewhere in that, starting off small soon works it's way up

  • Sodium chlorate absorbs water from the air rendering itself useless, try to make potassium chlorate by using any potassium salt and sodium chlorate.

If you have Mg powder mix it with some SiO2 ignite it with a torch MgSi will be formed, if you pour hydrochloric acid to the compound the released gases will catch fire spontaneously on contact with air due to the formed SiH4 and Si2H6 (It just came to my mind seeing the MgAl)

  • So, once the reaction has completed, what's left in the bottle?

  • I'm not sure, look up the chemical reaction on Google.

  • @RupertsCrystals Mostly aluminium oxide and some sodium compound.

  • @RupertsCrystals Na[Al(OH)4]

  • british r not stupid IM BRITISH

  • thx but only 4 educational use only wat the hell is that supose to mean to a 10 yr. old kid who likes to blow things up????? and where do u get that chemical suff? all in all nice vid man

  • Ehrr.... Do show how the reactions work... H2+O=H2O, that's how hydrogen burns.

  • ha ha at least he's getting good practice for later in life with those "balloons" lol

  • It's better. Or, otherwise, try KNO3, nitrium;)

  • You have half a reason... Well KClO3+sucrose gets you to obtain a disintegration of sucrose (obtaining certainly H2, C and other chemicals) but not with a bang, but with a great and beautiful flame. You can try, if you want a great bang, you can try NI3, ammonium triiodide, but it's very dangerous and, in a country how mine (Italy) its employement isn't legal.

Good luck in your experiments, boy;)

  • Ok, thanks. Maybe not ammonium triiodide but probally some better flash powder, perchlorate or permanganate with MgAl

  • Or sucrose and potassium chlorate; or some potassium permanganate, although it's a bit dangerous for your hands, boy ;).

  • Hmmm, i don't think this will work. Haven't tried. Got Potassium Nitrate, not perchlorate or permanganate yet though.

  • You have a bottle of highly basic solution which if you spilt on yourself would cause serious and permanent chemical burns. All your doing is collection hydrogen gas when you could go to any store buy some aerosol and fill balloons with it for an even bigger bang and far less dangerous. If you want a big bang with a gas use a hydrocarbon of some sort if you want a highly exothermic reaction mix a strong acid with a strong base or... light something on fire.

  • This bottle will not break, whether it is from the sudden heat difference or from the Sodium Hydroxide... It will not break. Try making some flash powder and contain it, maybe in a polumna. If you want a bigger bigger bang. Try KNO3+MgAl+S

  • You can create Hydrogen also starting by this reaction:

    HCl+Zn--->ZnCl2+H2

    Or starting by this reaction:

    HCl+Al--->AlCl3+H2

Both these reactions are much more exhotermic than yours.

  • Hydrogen chloride + zinc : zinc chloride + Hydrogen (2 as the don't come separetly) I don't really have these chemicals. I might try electrolisys

  • Wrong. The reaction is:

    2HCl + Zn = ZnCl2 + H2

  • what did he say

  • What part of this video do you not understand.

  • there's a simpler way; electrolysis

  • Good point, but i don't have iron rods or whatever it is. Or does that make Iron Oxide? I'm not sure, but some people don't have the right stuff to make hydrogen via electrolysis and it can be more dangerous as oxygen is created along with the hydrogen, making it unstable. Not too unstable but fairly unstable, not as unstable as my flash powder. It is possible though!

  • ur wrong-all u need is a cup of water, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), 2 paperclips/wires, 9v dc (300 or 500 milliamps) you can use salt, but it makes the water turn brown and icky, so use baking powder

  • Thanks for the correction. I was thinking about iron oxide, therminte :). Might try that some time.

  • good idea- if you want to have some fun, add a drop of dishsoap and the bubbles don't pop; so when there's alot of bubbles, light them with a match. try it! :)

  • Hehe, sounds fun. Might try getting some bigger balloons. Also, with electrolysis. It's hard to contain and store the hydrogen, for example in a balloon.

  • o yea, i guess its not a good idea for inflating a baloon, but still pretty cool

  • Yer

  • Although salt will increase the rate of reaction, do not use it. In this reaction it will create chlorine gas.

  • I believe you are talking about electrolysis... If you try it, it actually produces chlorine however it stays in the water. It turns it green. Also, you are not going to make H H O as you make NaO+ Cl + H2. Use sodium bicarbonate.

  • Actually, he's got the stuff right there - Sodium Hydroxide. Salt and baking powder both take part in the reaction. Salt produces chlorine, which is poisonous. I'm not sure what baking powder produces but caustic doesn't take part in the reaction, so you don't get any by products.

You can also use Potassium Hydroxide.

  • old trick ;)

  • not all chem reactions are exothermic. but draino and al is VERRY exothermic if you do it the"fun" way

  • Ohh, thanks. Exothermic means it gets hot or somthing?

  • "Ohh, thanks. Exothermic means it gets hot or somthing?"

Means it gives out heat during the reaction - endothermic needs heat

  • OK, thanks.

  • u should but way more tin foil in it,

iy goes faster and more hydro

  • Yer,

    1. To make it go extremley fast, put a high concentration of caustic soda in it.

    2. If it goes too fast the bottle gets very hot quickly which makes the balloon hard to take off, it has even melted the plastic before on the balloon before.

  • STUPID BRITISH!!!!!!

  • And how are we stupid?

  • Capital job, ya little dickens! Q-Branch would be proud, not only of your technical ledgerdemain but of your impeccible diction as well!

  • I don't understand...???!!!

  • Q-Branch...place where james bond gets his equipment

    ledgerdemain...magic

    diction...you talk good

  • you no if u were making hydrogen threw electrolysis it would blow up better because it is hho 2 hydrogen adams and 1 oxygen adam and that 1 oxygen adam helps it blow up

  • what is caustic soda also known as????

  • o ya and where can i get it?

  • I got it from a hardware shop by me.

  • IM from the uk but for the u.s i think it is known as draino?

  • Sodium Hydroxide, Caustic Soda, Lye. Also known as Draino, as you say.

It's one of the principal ingredients in soap, also.

  • sodium hydroxide. watch out though, it can blind you

  • Yer, anything as high or low like that on the Ph scale can do you some nasty damage.

  • Neato, I'll have to try that sometime.

We made soap in school today (I'm doing A-Level Chemistry) and it really worked, unfortunately it had some excess sodium hydroxide solution in it, so we almost burnt our fingers off (so did the teacher) XD.

  • kwl

  • we're doing that in school

  • rly?
