you need to back you timing up just a bit mine would run fine untill you got on it then it would pop like yours did i have a holley too back your timing up a bit and that will fix that problem
@SS350silverado It had a blown powervalve at the time so i trashed it and fitted a Edelbrock 600,problem solved...Thanks for your suggestion though, got a new truck thats halfway through a body off resto..1980'C10.
@DemoFly As do I. Any idiot can build a 350. Most people don't mess with 305's because they don't want to put any effort and time into them. I would rather have something a little different.
the 305 has a small 3.73 bore whereas the 350 has a 4 inch bore. Your limited in valve size which hampers high rpm high horsepower numbers but if you wanna make 300-450hp with alot of good torque there is nothing wrong with a 305. Get creative and stuff a 400 crank into a .030 305 and you get a torque monster 334 =)
NICE MOTOR! You know, people underestimate 305 Chevy's. They call them boat anchors, lethargic, etc. There was a Hot Rod Mag article a year or so ago where a guy took a 305 and with some......unique work he did in his garage he made it dyno 394 horses. Not bad for a "boat anchor".................
@mongo5888 I correct myself. The article is called "Recycled Power" and is in the June 2008 issue of Popular Hot Rodding. 394 H.P. @ 6,300 and 364 TQ @ 5,000 RPM's. Eat it 305 haters.
Like your comment...but the 305 had just been rebuilt after being unstarted for 7 years,,,i guess you'd rev the balls of it and throw a main...preaching to the deaf with me so jog on.
that is one sexy engine- i got a 79 firebird and im doing the eng swap on it from the 301 to the 305- with a 350 tranny how do i get about 400+ hp outta this eng? possibly thinking about a turbo...please advise this is my first car haha
With the right parts and measurements. My buddy is building a 350 w over 650 horse all motor. You would need to raise the compression, change out the cam, maybe use roller rockers, along with other proper component choices. But if you can find a built 350 or 383 for good price take it The 305's do get great gas mileage, and when built right rev like all hell. You can never go wrong with a 350 though. Both are great motors.
thats right... horsepower might be on the low-end, but horsepower is only a measure of how fast the engine produces TORQUE... of which the motor makes plenty of to haul.
Nice! You should get the big Edelbrock Air breather that matches the Edelbrock valve covers you got....

To be honest you would be better off going straight to the 350..although the 305 is a decent motor its never gonna produce..
And the money is better spent on the 350 in the long haul.
Check over the web for forums relating to your car, theres plenty around and the best place to gain info...good luck with the car.

thanks - i actually saved myself some work- instead of the firebird im getting a 89 90 camaro v8 305 already in it...thats the good news

You could get that all motor.

350 swap it
its the same block as the 305 just diferent bore and crank more horsepower cheaper and easier to work on

Your not wrong.!
They get classed as the underdog but its the original motor so it stays and it does a good job of haulin the blazer around.

Those little 305s in my opion are very smooth running V8s. I have one myself. All original.
