just for the record, i don't believe for a second that Mary or Flo was nowhere near the singer that Diana Ross is. God bless them all, but how do you make Diana Ross a background singer at anytime? Really I'm just saying...
Diana is Miss Ross's REAL NAME, It was accidentally Typed onto her Birth Certificate, Her parents had intended to call her Diane, She was known as Diane to Friends & Family ONLY, Miss Mary is Neither, she uses it a a Jab, her way of Feeling important & showing Disrespect
Generous?, Motown was out to make Money, Berry Gordy made the decisions, Ross had it ($Cross Over Appeal$), Why would he gamble with the Formula?, Diana Ross is a VERY GENEROUS Woman, she made sure Florence had a Home for herself & her Children & did the same for Mary, Only to get Stabbed in the back, Any "Hatchet" that remains was placed in Diana's Back by Mary, Over & over again
@TheReturnOfBigBear I always heard that Mary especially had something against Diana. I guess because she felt she stole the spotlight but in every group, there's one that overshadows the others, as harsh as it sounds, it's true most times. In interviews in referring to her, would instead call her "Diane". Yes, that's her real first name, but a bit of immaturity was sensed to me. I don't know.
@stevie68a They did. I think that Mary & Flo's resentment stemmed from Berry Gordy having made Diana the lead singer, even though her voice was not better than theirs. Yes, that's true, but Diana cannot be blamed for everything. You pretty much answered your own question: Diana was a breakout star. Regardless of who is said to have screwed someone over, name a record label that doesn't do that to most artists. Their fates can't be changed. Destiny is destiny and for Mary & Flo, it wasn't to be.
@MJRookieRook I think Flo and Mary's resentment stemmed less from Diana being the main lead singer on the singlesbut from Gordy treating them like hired help (on the good days).
Their producers wanted to use Mary and Flo more but Gordy consistently said no, made them remix tracks until you could barely hear them, cut album tracks featuring them, gave their live songs to Diana and worse.
There's no excuse for the way Gordy treated Flo and Mary. Period.
@mafketays I never said that what Berry Gordy had done was excusable. For many years a lot of record company owners made some of their artists just to break them. Sadly Mary and Flo were two of the many that it happened to. It's awfully easy for us to say what Gordy should've, would've and could've done. But what happened, has happened. It can't be changed by anyone. There's no sense in getting worked up about it because what happened is out of our hands.
timeless classic . 15 again at my first youthclub disco and the world seemed a better place 1969 .why ..... can we turn back the hands of time and all try a little harder!!!!!
i will tell you this diana is a classic motown singer and has made her fortune ! i will always say she is an amazing singer and stand by that !although she done things to get her career going lets count down how many other band an singer has done it! ....big dave fae Scotland
I think this would have to be my all-time greatest Supreme song. Yet, all of there music was great, even the B sides. Yet, I just can't seem to figure out how a somebody like a Madonna can come out with just one hit, at her start and become a "Superstar" To me, by that same standard the Supremes should be considered "Super MegaSuperstars".
I heard this song the immedately after my daughter was born 24 years ago. And it is as true today as it was the day she was born; whenever she is near, I hear a symphony. This September that "symphony" will rise to heaven as I give her away. But I will also have the memories and this song to remind me...of how fortunate I have been to have a beautiful daughter; delicate, kind and caring.
The Supremes. America's greatest contibution to music. Such talent, such harmony most of all they were simply fantastic. In my opinion Florence inspired Diana to be better.
@SissyGirl I'm inclined to agree. I always thought Flo was sometimes caught behind a shadow, maybe even her own, but I love her and Diana and Mary, just the same.

45 years later......We wanted more Mary & Florence! NO name change. Why didn't
they listen to the fans? Couldn't Ross have been a bit more generous in sharing the
spotlight, even tho everybody knew she was the breakout star?
I hope Di and Mary bury the hatchet for the sake of the FANS.
