Hey Brian Am Looking To Start Doing Some Uplighting And Just Wondering How Do You Plug Them All In (Power & Dmx) I Dont Want Extension Cable's All Over The Place Thanks (If You Can Show Me A Vid That Would Be Gr8 Thank's)
Everything looks VERY nice BUT the gobo... it looks weak! I just ordered a ETC Source Four Jr. Zoom. I'm glad I did because it'll be 575watts instead of that low light solution you chose. Nice setup with the Scrim King. I ordered some after seeing this video.
great video brian.. i would really love for you to do a video on the wiring and hiding the cables when you uplight.. i would really love to see a video of that and im sure many others would to. thanx..
Whet i lighting designed a concert for school, i took some lights and uplit some walls. it looked AWESOME and the principle even came up and said so. Thanks so much for all the amazing ideas!
I just had to watch this video again. I really love the lighting here. Uplighting just makes a place look so damn classy. I think it's the perfect lighting for weddings. You've really got me thinking now, Brian.
hi I have a room capacity for 200 peoples, whith 14 feet ceiling for a weeding event I hant to have all the walls with one gobo, all over the walls what would be the best material to get for the job.
That looks fantastic Brian! I bet you blew that planner away with that set up. Just curiuos how much DMX cable do you run for uplighting? and do you use DMX cables or mic cable?
@crazydevon007 I use DMX cables, but only used them at this gig to master/slave my MegaBars that were behind me. All other uplights were ran on internal static mode programs (a Red/Blue LED mix that made sort of a pinkish color)
@briansredd you got a point there you have to do what the paying customer wants good lighting im waiting to get my hands on some jellyfish and maybe the new vizi scan
Nice work Brian. A few questions. Did you use a DMX controller? Does Scrim King sell those in pairs or just singles? What camera are you shooting your gig videos on? I am doing weddings on par with this one in PHX, AZ. Would you mind emailing me what your rate was on that one?
1- No, everything was either internal or static mode
2 - Not sure what the options are on how you can buy Skrim King. I think you can buy them sepperate. Contact them. They LOVE to hear from people who have watched my vids!
3 - My camera is an old JVC Everio 30 gig hard drive camera. I'm due for a new one
4 - I got $1500 for this one with all the upsells, however, every market is different.
Thank you very much for the replies! Love the videos...keep up the good work. If you pull the trigger on a new camera...let me know what you go with! Thanks again.
OMG now your talking....yes thats the feeling feels good I Know Great Job.. There is nothing better when you make a venue look good they wank you back to do it again and again
Hey Brian, the lights looked great. I was just wondering, did you use a dmx controller for your up lighting, or did you just set the colors you wanted on the fixture to run static? Also, how did you power them, were there outlets right next to the trees or did you run extension cords? Thanks man....
Great video blog Brian. Thanks for all the great ideas & insights into planning ahead, lighting, working w/ other vendors, etc. It was a real plus to see the Revo 4 in action w/ other fixtures, since I just put in an order for that light. Thanks!
Hope you had fun at the Pfister the next day. If nothing else, the food there is always great.
I am not trying to come off in a cocky way here. There are better ways to produce the gobo. I have seen people use a normal projector hooked up too a laptop, and make the gobo in your favorite photo program. Then make everything but the letters black and project it on the floor. Looks the same as a gobo but cheaper in the long run.
@RRollergod but leaving a projector on for 6 hours might cause the image to burn into the projector. like when a TV is set to CNN all day long, when you change the channel you still see the CNN logo on the TV. and hey, if the bride is willing to pay for it, charge them $100 and make an extra $25!
i uplight almost all of my gigs now, in additional to my full light show,,,,but i setup the big truss thing, lol never though about doing multiple tri pods i might do it once to see how it looks
Hey Brian..great job ...I can see you are getting more into the larger set ups. Looks great!
Just a quick suggestion about the monogram....try putting it on a wall or the ceiling....the reason is because when it is on te floor the light is bending to meet the angle of its projection. This causes people not able to see what it is from certain angles...also once dancing begins the monogram is practically gone...just a couple tips....other than that looks great.
Yeah I thought about that too. They specifically requested it on the floor. Couldn't figure out why until I saw the room. Notice I was pretty much on a glass wall and the walls around me were glass doors.
What are you using for your Uplighting? I bought half a dozen ADJ Par 64 LEDs to use for uplighting, and were amazed at how large they are. The thing I really like about them is the accuracy of the colours I can reproduce with them hooked up to the ADJ MyDMX software on my lighting laptop. Plus, that monogram idea. Bloody Awesome mate!
The corners of the room were your lights, the Par 64 LED pros. On the walls lighting up the trees were a mix of Elation Event Panels and Mega Panels (essentialy the same type of fixture when ran AC with slightly differnt programing) menu)
Hot damn are they expensive with the battery packs! I just ordered 4 of them as they are more along the lines of what I wanted in the first place! Good thing I still have my day job! LOL
Brian the room looks awesome ! Doing my first uplighting in a couple of months. I think this is the new trend for 2010.Brides see those Wedding shows on TV and want the same things. How long did it take you to set up the uplighting? what are you charging ?
and yeah I had a wedding last night and doing a Bridal Show today - ugh !
Practice and Enjoy - and give me more belly dancing : )
Very nice gig log and I agree, this set up is the nicest looking one from you. Liking the custom gobo and especially the Scrim-King skirts. Have you considered using the white ones and lighting them from behind? I've used them like that for years and they look terrific. In fact, I'll post a video response from 2008, so you could see what I mean.
Missed you at MBL but I'm hoping to attend next year, along with fellow Canadians Jasper and Stef, we'll see if work allows the time off.
Photographers/videographers will always have that extra tripod (or two) for a remote flash...thats a given. I just try to ensure they don't plug into any of my outlets/circuits.
I have to ask, did somebody request "Quality Control" by Jurassic 5 or was it something you decided to drop?
make a video how to deal with these people brian! i wanna work with them but whats the point of having a fog machine if these people complain all the time about using it or strobes. its like why even set it up.
if your thinking about custom gobos, look at getting 2 moving heads and load the gobo wheels with the first and possibly last names of the bride and groom then via dmx you can get the names scrolling onto different surfaces throughout the night
This looks spot on, im hopefully becoming a dealer for Scrim king cant wait to give them a try myself , helps finish a room, i have used costume gobos for wedding ppl really seem to like them, i have also used them in a club gig i do in my scanners looks the nuts,
The uplighting looked great Brian, nice job! I'm glad you mentioned the x-color led monogram light, it makes my decision about whether to purchase or not to purchase one of these easier. For the gobo, I know a place that does just the letters WAY cheaper, I'll send you a private message with that info. Nice to see you going bigger!
I've mixed Tina turner's 'Nutbush city limits' with 'Who are you" by The Who. or 'Won't you' from Simple minds into Money for nothing - Dire straights. How about Blue monday mixed with Don't you want me to Just can't get enough.
I'm not the greatest mixer and never will be but by mixing and cutting at the right moment can keep the crowd on a high. Playing 7min tunes at weddings can leave your crowd bored after just a couple of songs.
@02392bretthaley Haha I know how to mix. I was just wondering if I should be putting the same amount of time and effort into it that I do for my other non-wedding gigs.
Imagine what just a ever so tiny bit of oh so wonderfully light fog would have done.... (to the light show.... not the fire alarm) How much does a couple hours of fire marshal cost around there?
Make sure the fire marshal have fun, is stuffed with good food and non alcoholic beverage. Having a good relation with your local fire dept. could give you an edge by being able to run smoke with less fuzz than you competition.
nice show he brian i can put my LED pars on slow coller fade that looks so coool to bad my DMX controler cant call that program up bu i hook up dmx and my ca-8 remote controler
@Maxsdiscos HA! Yeah really. He was a real nice guy. The tripod didn't stay there very long. Videographers have done this to me in the past with white lights so bright that I might as well turn off my light show

Also, are most DJ lights these days LED based? The ones that you show seem to be, but I'm curious if that's the norm...

@yorgle The little laser dots are created with the Galaxian by American DJ
LED lights are starting to become the norm. They just make sense because of the low power consumption, long life and virtually no heat

@Maxsdiscos HA! Yeah really. He was a real nice guy. The tripod didn't stay there very long. Videographers have done this to me in the past with white lights so bright that I might as well turn off my light show
