There was a Starlog mag interview with screenwriter Lorenzo Semple. He says he envisioned the "borer worms" as these little creatures that--everytime they bit you--it gave you a tiny orgasm. The Princess realizes if she doesn't confess, she will die of pleasure. He actually wrote a scene into the script. But the censors objected so he had to settle for the Princess just saying "No! Not the borer worms!"

@zooeyhall Dear Peter Wyngarde of Jason King fame, his acting career was cut short by a draconian reaction to a slight indiscretion with a truck driver in a public toilet (which didn't stop John Gielgud from working). Presumably that is why Klytus had to wear a mask but he is so good in this. People mocked this film when it was released as being campy nonsense but it's cinematically far more interesting than the Star Wars prequels, not to mention fun and kinky.

@Concreteowl Thanks for the info. And I agree with your comments. "Flash Gordon" was (and is) far better than some other much-ballyhooed sci fi films. I also cannot understand why it has been dissed by so many. It's like you say: fun and kinky. It moves along at a good clip and doesn't take itself too seriously but is still entertaining--just like the original. You can tell the actors are having a real hoot playing the parts.
