I have listen to music my whole life and there has been few times when a song stops me in my tracks last night on Parenthood I got stopped.Wow Thanks Joni awesome lyrics
Go to him, stay with him if you can... But be prepared to bleed... Makes me think of my ex. I wouldn't date him again for the world, but somehow he still has a big impact on my life because we were together for so long. -sigh-
So the guy can trill around the scale, he sounds like a hoarse goose getting stepped on. Painful. Blasphemy to say this is better than Joni. Different=better? No.
joni mitchell has some of the most beautiful lyrics, and i love it when i can listen to artists sing covers of these kinds of songs so well....james blake is able to bring this song to a whole new level, LOVE IT!!
I also watched Parenthood and when they played this song @ the end, with Sara and Seth watching same movie....made me cry! I HAD to find it!!! :) So happy I did!!!
@debbiecape Same for me! I'd never heard this song before but his version is the only one that I found that says," You're my holy wine," as opposed to Joni Mitchell's version that says, "Like holy wine." The latter drew me in.
Parenthood also brought me here. Once saw a piece by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, done to Joni Mitchell's original. An incredible song. And, Parenthood deserves some sort of special recognition (in addition to deserving whatever awards exist for television...) for its music (it also introduced me to Ray LaMontagne).
Also here by way of Parenthood. But I stopped by Joni's version first. When I turned 21, I was in a VW microbus with 4 other kids driving from Amsterdam to Athens and Joni Mitchell's "Blue" (which is the album this is from) was one of two tapes we had for the trip. I don't think a fully loaded ipod would have been better.
Funny...I heard it on Parenthood too and loved it. Its heartfelt and warm and made me a little sad being what they were playing this song to. I was married to an alcoholic for 7 years. Its painful stuff.
Why haven't I heard this before. Thanks Parenthood for introducing me to it. Oh we all know that Seth is gonna relapse and the coffee girl is gonna keep her baby so no need to drag those storylines on forever.
eh fuck all u zane lowe haters. if it wasnt for him, nobody wouls get to hear this type of music. chill the fuck out, nothing wrong in showing emotion if a song touches u personally. what as a dj u carnt show it????
God.. I just fell in love with him :-) .. This one's actually better than the original by Joni Mitchell. I get chills everytime I hear this masterpiece. He makes the song sound so sensetive and fragile, but at the same time it's so.. strong.
listening to this song leaves me dizzy. is 'transcendental' too cliché/too much? still, that's how it leaves me feeling. just the epitome of beautiful - could listen to it on repeat non-stop.
(and can i add my thanks to those appreciating the lack of zane lowe's inanity at the end)
I can understand why some Joni Mitchell fans don't like this cover. His phrasing is a bit odd and it doesn't sound as honest as the original. But for me, I like the way he messes with the piano and the rhythm. It makes the melody in the last line stand out even more. Plus, this guy is a talented singer. I like the vulnerability in his voice.
reminds me of Anthony from Anthony and the johnsons. Such a beautiful voice and so much pain you almost cry. Love it but Limit to your love is the greatest
@ RobertPaulJackson Not sure what your problem is? If you don't like James Blake, that's fine, go listen to something you do. James has by-passed any label the media want to catergorise with, such as "dubstep" & has crafted a mighty fine album. In the end, the album & James will stand or fall on their musical merits & it seems to me, he's gonna do very well. He has the maturity to cover a classic track by one of the worlds greatest singer/songwriters & pulls it off brilliantly.
In what way is he a con artist you fucking idiot? I really do hope you reply and explain to me how he is because I am genuinely baffled by your claim; especially when the idiot making the claim is a generic Arctic Monkeys fan.
@SirBedlam Because he's used an unremarkable technical understanding to deconstruct familiar forms and pass them off as 'art.' There is no more value in this, nor in any other of Blake's work, than there is in a Shakespearean sonnet that's been rearranged by a computer that can recognise metrical feel. Clearly, he is getting away with it because he's successfully developed a pool of deluded, drooling, sycophantic hipsters who take it personally when his lack of genuine talent is pointed out.
@RobertPaulJackson Bad artists copy. Great artists steal. But then again, you seem pretty confident in your statement, so would you please present to us the amazingly talented people, playing music we've never heard anything like before.
In what way does he pass it off as "art"? I see no claims of art anywhere in this, I am sure James would agree and his fan base. It is a cover; when have covers ever been deemed as art?
How is he getting away with it? You say this as if he is not worthy of success, if you think that then you really are naive.
It is funny that you speak of a "pool of deluded, drooling, sycophantic hipsters" something which you would class Dubstep fans as, it's ironic that you are one.
@RobertPaulJackson So, to sum up your comment, this cover is minimal and so is bad. Because he's used his technical skills, this cover could be done by anyone with those technical skills.
You're either extremely naive, or simply jealous that you or one of your favourite bands haven't had his success when you feel you deserve it more. I would also like to point out that I'm not one of his 'deluded, drooling, sycophantic hipsters' as I only heard James Blake for the first time today.
@theboogieman9988 so-though this is YouTube and not really a place to get too narked, as it is only opine, I would have to suggest that ignorant t#^$ would be more suitable for you given that you so vehemently missed the point of my original comment. I'm not a music critic. Perhaps you are.
To the 'boogie-woogie' man... Don't think you read my comment properly. I was saying that the constant labelling of him as dubstep is not a negative thing-but that it's a shame that other elements in his music are passed over and perhaps overlooked because people don't necessarily interpret them or they're more difficult to label in themselves... Don't think I look like an ignorant twat! I'm a great fan of both dubstep and James Blake I just think it's a disservice-as someone else pointed out p
James Blake has got a lot going for him, really. Each time he releases something new, his music seems to have morphed into something slightly different... Hate all the 'dubstep' chat really because that's wholly doing a disservice-as mentioned above-by cutting off from the other elements in his music, like the clear references to contemporary classical music and jazz. Not to mention his voice! Just on the right side of edge, where it feels like he'll fall off the note. Ideal.
@ZHM7 the 'dubstep chat' is not doing a disservice to the man when he himself has reiterated many times that he considers himself a dubstep artist...and his work clearly is in the vein or dubstep...if you think his work is brilliant...kool, i agree with you...but don't slight dubstep just to bulk out your points...because you'll end up looking like an ignorant twat that doesn't know what they're talking about...
@zacsimile No worries, it took some delicate pausing. That guy is such a massive tool, and you could tell that Blake was completely disinterested in the whole affair. It's amazing that he could he could perform so evocatively under those circumstances.
@smitty010493 there was another radio rip of this uploaded first that was about 10 seconds longer, and in it the host of the show, named Zane Lowe says at the end "WOW What do you expect me to say to THAT?! That was a-MAZING" and james just says "oh thank you". it was really dorky.
Truly special. Thank you.
