Aaron Copland himself plays this piece the best! I learned this piece last year! I will make a new video of this piece and upload it soon! I love this performance!
I have been playing the piano for almost 11 1/2 years and I am finding that Aaron Copland's pieces are some of the best and most fun pieces to play. Aaron Copland spends most of the time in his pieces (especially this one) telling stories. This piece sounds like it is influenced by Scott Joplin, and Cecil Taylor among others, but it also sounds as if Copland is fusing the European classical style in this piece. The pieces Copland wrote are anecdotes of American life the way it truly is.
I have played it for 40 years on the Ampico and it always sounds fast like this. Copland liked fast pieces so I feel it is correct. These late Ampico pieces were recorded very accurately tempo and attack so it is authentic. rollcol
Whoa! I didn't even come close to playing it this fast, and I thought I was doing great! LOL! It does sound a lot better at this tempo though (haha good job, composer). How did you get a recording of Copland playing this?!
From the tags in this video, it's a reproducing player piano that is being recorded. A reproducing player piano "reproduces" the artist's exact touch - ergo, that really IS Aaron Copeland. I've also heard, for example, George Gershwin playing Rhapsody in Blue... any time I want, in my living room, on a Steinway grand. Courtesy of a Duo Art player mechanism.
this is the speed the composer himself plays it and how he wrote it. The cats are slower and the mice are the fast bits I think.... ;) There's a lot of YouTube clips showing people getting all arty over this dragging it out to 4 minutes and over 5 minutes one of them! It's just a short piece. Play it like Copeland did and you'll get the best applause at the recital as the piece will come over correctly. Good luck with your performance!
@gregmason2007 - so how did Cat & Mouse go? Copland wrote this in1920, boy he had a long career.
I'm building an ever-expanding music history channel with over 500 playlists so far. I added this to my Copland list last year & today it goes on the 1920 list as well. My lists feature most genres & cover the globe. 111 lists let you hear the music of any year since 1900 like you've gone back in time.
I love hearing how Copland himself played it. Do you know where I could purchase a copy of the audio?

@kithic14 No it's just the way he played it. You can play it slower. Heck, I've played piano for almost 10 years and I can't play this fast. XD

Search YouTube for a kitten menacing a green ball, set to score by Jerry Goldsmith, and some Elliot Goldenthal.
