My mom listens to this song all the time in the car. I was singing it when I first watched the movie. then I was like... "Oh wait... I know that song!"
I don't know person who didn't cry when watched this movie. The most beautifull anime about lost love. Best sad story ever. This song is surely talk about a love story, a couple that seperated of fate, but how much they try to meet again, they can't.
However, they still keep hoping meeting each other, in a sudden, in dreams, in their hearts.. they strongly feel that they'd meet again one day. Akira no longer knows who she is anymore. Lost and emotionally defeated.
The train scene at the end is just a symbolic the writer wants to show everyone. Its not really happen. The message from the train scene is he should just move on, step forward and forget the past. The girl is already move on after waiting for him for many years and she's already married. Every person can relate to this, because all of us miss someone who isn't there anymore. No matter how much we love, sometimes things just don't work out, and we don't get the ending we want.

Yesterday I watched this movie at the anime expo 2011 Los Angeles, and I fell in love with this song. I do not get tired of watching it. Thank you for putting this video!
@bulmak its an animated movie "5 centimeters per second" by Makoto Shinkai. The movie is slice-of-life genre and somewhat depressing but I really recommend it :)
@bulmak Its a story focused on two young loving friends who grow older and further apart. One puts that part of their life behind them and moves on. The other slowly realises that they can't, but by that time the life they still want to be living is gone forever. I would really recommend it for anybody about the age of 16/17, I think its important for somebody to have an idea of that feeling of losing a loving relationship before seeing the film, to get the full impact.
I like how at the end he has a smile on his face. I interpreted it as him getting over it and moving on with his life. In that sense both of them have happy endings as Akari seems to be happy with her husband too.
@foroughshafiee Yes, very true. As the train passes and he looks at the past with a sad face for the last time. And it is as you said; Akari does seem to be happy. It's a realistic and mature ending. (but it's still sad damn it!)

I already watched this part dozens of times. But every time, I hold out at the end, somehow expecting a different ending.

This movie was so life changing.
The words used to express the feelings of the characters were so beautiful... And sadly, I can relate so much :(
I hated how they weren't able to meet each other at the end and live a forever together :(
But I guess that's life for you (T___T)
Anyways, thanks for posting the video :) Great quality, with subtitles :D
Thank you very much (^__^)
I will never forget this movie or song! Such wonderful works! (T__T) <3

If you look closely he actually smiled after he turned his face away from the train and walked away
it probably meant that he was finally able to let her go...
