  • anyone know what soundtrack this is? its cool

  • saw him live with death cab. Nothing beats his power and timing.

  • What's the song playing here?

  • His ride is a paiste 2002 24" crash cymbal. used as a ride.

  • I was at the convention and Jason gave us the run down on this cymbal set-up.

That's the 24" Giant Beat you're seeing. No 2002 in this set-up. It's actually real easy to distinguish the difference between the giant beat and 2002.

    Hope this helps.

  • His style of playing is cool but his monstertruck bassdrum... he is the only drummer with such a weird but still good sounding bassdrum.

  • @LewisDijs ehem...John Bonham?!

  • I love how Paiste cymbals have that distinct sheen to them. But anyway, Mr. McGerr is one of my favorite drummers. Very innovative and inspirational , 3 thumbs up!

  • I used to be taught by John Fisher, the amazing drummer who teaches Jason.

  • It's drumming like this that'll get you the Jobs. Not showing everyone how blazing fast you are

  • This dudes kick drum work and fills are killer.

  • holy shit he is so tight.

  • Hey all, what tune is Jason playing to here? It really mellows me out. Fantastic playing, as well.

  • The DCFC muzak is hilarious.

  • His style is unmatched.

  • they hav that reflectiv look that dram cymbals hav, i like it!

  • LONG LIVE JASON. LONG LIVE THE GIANT BEAT.

  • i love how all the people going 'this guys nothing special' are pretty much the who's-who of drummers you probably don't want to hire professionally.

  • I don't understand why a drumming festival would want to showcase this. There is nothing to showcase.

  • [from brazil, pardon my bad english] i wanna these cymbals for meeee!! they sound so bright!! Glorious Paiste!

  • the toms sounds beautiful

  • whats so special about this guy? ...

  • @jackpaice you got somthin to learn

  • @opiommm i got a lot to learn. but i just dont think this guy could teach me

  • @jackpaice Are you kiddin', man? Look around youtube at some of this guy's other stuff. He's absolutely great.

  • He's a solid pocket player.

  • @jackpaice

He's got a really nice and rare groove that sounds amazing. Sometimes playing simple is better..

  • giant beats

  • Giant Beats!!!

  • He's just so friggin good!

  • yeah simple setup but look at the technique..jason rocks!!!!!!!

  • there should be more drummers out there like him

  • I enjoy his drumming with Death Cab.

The man's got a great groove!

  • i love his cymbals they sound amazing!

  • he makes it look so easy. i can prolly do all that, but i cant control my feet. they always gets superhyped, and make a double beat. i wish i cud get that sorted, and id be untouchable. eventually

  • Ok. That's my bad. I should have looked at the date. I looked into it, and he still uses some giant beat cymbals. He generally uses the 15" hi-hats. For the rest I think it just depends on what he's playing, or how he's feeling that day. :)

  • All cymbals are from the Giant Beat series.

    Jason uses a 15 " hi-hat, 18" and 20" multi crash/ride and a 24" ride.

  • Those are Paiste Twenty Series cymbals.

  • No it can't be twenty because paiste didn't make the Twenty Series in 2006.

  • @bensinstod : I think they're the Paiste Signature Series

  • @vernssd No, Those are giant beats

  • @bensinstod definitley twenty... great drummer!!

  • @emaculate he used to use Giant Beats but now he's using cymbals from the twenty line is Since: 2007, and this was in 2006

  • @bensinstod Those are Giant Beats, look at the labels on the cymbals. and he played them before Twentys came out

  • @bensinstod these are giant beats fo sho

  • @bensinstod Look @0:26 u can see the brand on the crash and its 2002

  • @TAMAvsDW that says "Giant Beat"

  • I was at this convention. Jason gave us the low down on his drums and cymbals set-up before he played. He's used the "Bonham's configuration" AKA Giant Beat Series at this festival.

24", 20", 18" and 15" hats. If you look closely at the video, all the cymbals are clearly identified.

    Hope this helps.

  • @emaculate Giant Beat

  • @alanpillow1 you can see giant beat label on the cymbals

  • @alanpillow1 Those are Giant Beat cymbals

  • They're all giant beat. pause at 1:09 and you can see the logo on the hat. I've been playing giant beat since they were re-introduced. Their characteristic sound and distinctive colour really set them apart from other Paiste series. I find the signatures and 2002 a little too bright for me these days.

  • what is the song he is playing along to called?

  • are those paiste 2002

    s??? what r those

  • No my mate those are giant beats

  • Not sure what those are, but I know he uses the Giant Beats a lot.

  • Anyone know what snare he uses? I use a Ludwig 14x6.5 LM402 Supra-Phonic and I want it to sound as good as THAT!

  • he uses a hand hammered Black Beauty 14 x 6.5 i believe for that set

  • He's a great Drummer, death cab or not - i would love to be able to have a jam session with him =)

  • simplicity never looked so good

  • I never heard of Jason until I bought the Modern Drummer '06 DVD and as soon as I heard him play I was hooked

  • this man is my hero

  • The cymbals are awesome

  • Id love to play to that track

  • don't u just love it lol

  • I just love Jason's style he's so in the pocket, and when it comes to Death Cab he plays just intricately enough around the rest of of the band, amazing feel.

  • he's one of my favorite drummers. he fits in perfectly with death cab, with his complex but precise style. love listening to him drum

  • his sticks are really thin

  • his setup and cymbals tells me hes a bonham fan

  • who isn't?

  • true

  • its pretty obvious that a million other drummers out there could probably shit on jason in speed, but ya know anyone can just play things fast. It's really more what you do with the fills rather than how fast they are that proves you're skillful and artful, and in that case, id say that jason is highly respectable and extremely talented. id rather listen to his creativity than blistering speed fills any day. Go Jason!

  • I agree 100%

  • jason is actually a really good drummer

this is the type of stuff your required to do at the md festival he shreds in the song called pitty and fear by death cab and he also does a drum duet with their singer in the song called we looked like giants check it out

  • hes good, but i can think of at least a dozen other drummers who id rather see in his place. he isnt over anyones head technically, and hes rather predictable. carey or greb would be very fitting. its still nice, chill music tho.

  • what song is this?

  • reason found

  • quite frankly, saying that "(zildjian/paiste/sabian) rule!" or "suck!" is just ignorant. all three make top quality products and you can get excellent sound out of any brand. no one really cares what brand you bought and now think are "the greatest ever".

now, on a less bitchy note, i love jason.

  • @willmer88 i prefer meinl they have sick cymbals

  • @willmer88 Great input. Drums are meant to be played, not argued!

  • he plys with the dynamics so well :P

  • what snare is that?13 inch?12inch?

  • regular 14"

  • i think its a 13

  • I'ma have to go with Treflipper on the cymbal issue.

I wasn't sure about or why the eighths on the hat until about 1:25. Then the ensemble pushed it into gear and opened my eyes and ears.

  • I agree, they're kind of shitty sounding, to be honest. Not a pleasant sound at all, and nothing like his sounds on any Death Cab stuff either.

  • funny this is the same setup he plays with death cab? there's nothing wrong with paiste cymbals.

  • what's that drum machine next to him?

  • this guy is cool.

  • so amazing i love how he keeps it simple but so mind blowing

  • MCGERR + PAISTE GIANT BEAT = EARGASM.

  • he's actually a really talented drummer just so you guys know. He doesn't show it all in this performance.

  • Jason does have some sick polyrhythm beats

he just didn't use them in this performance.

It is unfair to compare Tomas Haake with Jason McGerr..

They have completely different style and I really doubt that if Tomas would sound half as good as jason playing along to this song. Tomas just doesn't have those subtle phrasing like this guy does.. Don't get me wrong Tomas haake is one of my favorite drummers but Jason is every bit as talented as Tomas ,if not better ..sorry for my english

  • great drumming but i really hate how his kit sounds, the toms do sound pretty great but everything else jus sounds terrible n kinda weak.

  • the drums fit the music perfectly, bass drums punchy with some open sound to it...snares not to poppy ( it it was it would sound good but out of text) its nice to see just a drummer groove ....

  • he is playing very soft and subtle he is not going to be smashing crash cybals in this song, man i love how his rides sound his hi-hat is pretty good too

  • I wish I had that independence. 4 limbs 4 different beats. How do you get it? I love the way jason plays drums. That video is sick.

  • dude if you seriously think this guys independence is anything special then go check out tony williams, he will make your head explode.

  • dude thats a basic 4/4 beat. theres no other time signatures.

  • check out thomas haake ;)

  • Damn.. that rack tom is just to big. Is that a 14" inch rack tom? That's too big for a rack tom I think. i'm just assuming, but what sizes are his drums?

  • looks like a 13" tom

  • I read somewhere that the set up is 13"x9", 16x16, and a 26x14.

I love that set up but I can't afford drums that big.

  • Yea, ur right. Looks like a "13x9" inch tom, 14"4 would be a little bigger, and his floor tom looks like a "16x16". Thanks for the info!

  • hey cud do u have the video of him starting off with snare and building up the set as he solos? if so PLEASE upload that one, its one of the best solos iv seen.

  • i know jason mcgerr uses paiste cymbals but what line or whatever does he use?

  • He is using giant beats in this video

I think it is 15" hihat, 18" and 20" crashes and 24" ride

He is currently using the Twenty line.

    15" hi-hat, 19" and 20" crashes and 22" ride.

You can also see his current setup on the paiste website

  • thanks man, i appreciate it.

  • I love giant beats, they sound amazing.

Jason's playing is really solid too. In tight and professional.

  • i know he could have done a lot more technical things, but i liked what he played.

  • Man his drums sound SO good. Mcgerr rocks.

  • hi,name of the track?
