  • most of the world knows 'Marburg' for one of the most deadly viruses known to man, lol

  • @1998AstonVilla Yess.. the one and only town in Europe with its own Virus ^^

  • that accent (oxfordlike) makes it very understandable, but this describes mostly the historical quarter of MR. the rest is usual, like somewhere else.

  • that accent (oxfordlike) makes it very understandable, but this describes mostly the historical quarter of MR. the rest is usual, like somewhere.

  • My grandparents live here. It is an awesome place.

  • Die Elisabethkirche (0:38) gilt übrigens als erste rein gotische Kirche in Deutschland (1235-1283).

  • Thanks for a very nice look at Marburg! Lived there for 6 years, met my husband there. Back to the USA, when his late boss heard where I was from he got all excited and told us why Marburg was not destroyed in WW II: This gentleman was a US Air Force bombardier and one day his plane was ordered to bomb Marburg, but when they got there it was covered in thick fog, they could not see their target at all. When they called in to find out what to do they were ordered to bomb some other place instead!

  • @BillsMutter Marburg was also Bombed but the U.S Air Force didnt want hit the castle and the elisabeth church! If they would have bombed it the Air Force, wouldnt be able to Navigate anymore... The High Buildings of Marburg are still there, same like Mainz( DOM) :P =)

    (Erasmus 2006/7)

  • @hanneisthier I'm planning to put Marburg as one of the options for my Erasmus application. Why was it so special for you? : )

  • Of course this town would HAVE to be nice....when I googled a point equidistant between Brest, France and Brest, Belarus you get.... drumroll please.... Marburg Germany. So it figures residing between the two 'brests' would be a very very nice location ; P

  • I disagree that the phillips university is marburg's biggest employer. What about Novartis behring??

  • The university employs 7,500 people according to Wikipedia; about 3,400 according to the Marburg website. Novartis Behring employs 1,200 people according to their own figures.

  • @rewboss also behring and novartis are not directly in marburg the are in a small town next to marburg i think its cölbe.

  • @14Schmitti Its in Marburg and Görzhausen, which is a part of Marburg! So direct to the city!

  • Isn't Marburg in Slovenia? MARBURG-MARIBOR.

  • Why did you move to Germany?

By the way your german is perfect!

  • I have had such a bad case of home sickness.. I found ur video by accident ... its on my favs now ... Thank you from the bottom of my heart for posting this ... It is one of the most beautifulist towns in all of germany .. and I miss it so ...

  • im moving there in september! :D I'm so excited, its beautiful!

  • Moving there... from the States? Well, if you've never been to Europe before, you may be in for a culture shock.

But yes, this part of Germany is very pretty. Enjoy. :)

  • yeah well, im kind of moving there. its foreign exchange. lol but I've been to germany before so I don't find that I'll have much culture shock.

  • I run the stairs at 5:40 faster than the lift :P

  • I live there and I will never go away from there, I looooove this beautyful town, come here and visit uss :P

  • That's my place of birth! I was born there and I don't know whether there is a more beautiful city in the world.

  • Da bin ich in 1998 gewesen.Sehr schoene Stadt!

    sorry

  • Byłem tam Marburgu

  • me like!! 5***** :D

  • thank you very much about your video of Marburg, I've lived there for many years but moved on because of the Richtsberg, to most hated place to live your life.

  • Yeah, the sound is always mistakenly regarded to be the roosters call, but between the clock and the trumpet you can hear that mechanical sound, that is much more distinguished when listening to it on the market place. That is the rooster flapping its wings! (One can't see that on your video though. Maybe I should make a video myself??)

  • Yeah...thats my town:D

  • This is my university town! In fact I'm sitting at my desk in my appartment, which is located in this very town...Marburg rules!!

I went abroad for one year and Tokyo was really great too, but I kinda missed the old town of MR. (Now I miss Tokyo,too...hahaha)

The rooster on top of the city hall clock tower is still there and as healthy as always!! He's in fact still making that "noise" someone here was refering to.

  • Ich habe die Elisabethkirche besigtet! Zehr schon und zehr alt!

  • Thats my city!It looks a bit like a dutch town, but i miss the coffeeshops...

Thats what i like about this city, its very old and has a history. And the castle!

You aint got that in Amerika!

Im gonna merry on that marketplace!

  • Charming piece with all of your characteristic wit.

  • Great video... makes me feel proud to be living here.

  • You forgot the "point" about the town hall clock:

Normally there is a rooster made of steel which comes out of a door above the clock and flaps his wings. That's the reason for the "unusual" sound.

Obviously this old thing was damaged when you were here :D

    But nice vid anyway ;)

  • Thank you for that extra information. Maybe next time I'm there they'll have fixed it.

  • yeah, the rooster is flapping its wings, indeed, but the sound comes from the trumpeter ;)

  • but i agree: nice video!

    thanks a lot

  • It's not the rooster that makes the sound. Below the clock sits Lady Justice on the right and Death on the left. Death has an hour glass in one hand and a horn in the other.

Originally, the sound was linked with the horn. Linking it with the rooster is a popular mistake concerning Marburg town hall.

Erstwhile Death was not only blowing the horn but also turning the hour glass every hour. But when this mechanism broke, nobody fixed it. Obviously most people found it too creepy.

  • Now, *this* is the kind of information I love. Thanks for that. :-)

  • Oh, the memories! Lived and studied in Marburg for nearly 10 years. Thank your this informative presentation!

Rewboss! I've also seen your videos about Würzburg, Schöllkrippen etc. and enjoyed them very much. Interesting side note: I come from lower franconia, so I know the locations of your travel reports pretty well.

BTW: you have an impressive voice: are you a BBC presenter or something like that?

  • Ha ha -- Not a BBC presenter, but I once did a very short voice-over for Deutsche Welle's English language service. I was working there as a translator and they needed a dozen voices at short notice. :)

  • Marburg, Hessen (!!)

  • "Hesse" is English for "Hessen". Go to Wikipedia's English language site and search for "Hessen".

  • ah, i c, well i won't have to look it up, you've done your research ;)

it just looked wrong to me :D

  • nice vid.. really shows marburg's spirit. got to love this town

  • hey, its an very nice video of Marburg!

  • very nice!!! sehr nett!!! i am livin there... ich wohn hier

  • I see you travel at least part of the time by rail. Europe has a wonderful rail service.
