Joystick tripods are cool, but I would never get one because they are less dependable and have the potential to fail more than a better-quality ball head or three way head. I guess if you don't put too much weight on one it won't matter too much.

Looks like Manfrotto's 222 Joystick head, which replaced their 3265. I'd love to have one if I had a digital camera with LCD. But I still shoot with film, so the movement would be awkward while I look through the eyepiece.

the joystick is good but not for heavy cameras and heavy lenses and if so you are much better with a ballhead.

That's the Bogen 3265 Grip Head...Bogen as in the pro's choice. Myself and many other pros use this head...including with the 70-200vr...if this head doesn't work for you then you're not using it correctly...

Who the heck are you, Thom Hogan? This was a gift and being a Manfrotto grip head still probably cost the giver a pretty penny, especially for someone who isn't a pro photographer. I would be very happy to get a gift like that, and I happen to be getting a Markins Q3 myself so I am well aware of the kind of quality levels that exist in this field. To Vespera, hope you're enjoying your very nice tripod setup, I'm sure it could handle a 70-200 just fine.
