I can't see the burials at sea (especially pushing the whole Avenger off the stern because they couldn't get the poor gunner out) without crying ever single time. This scene was the only time I ever saw my father cry.
@Cruiserfrank That was pilot Robert Cosgrove's TBM # 93 based on he USS Essex.The gunner was Loyse Deen. They could have removed him from the aircraft but the plane was so damaged from the bombing run that it was decided to bury Deen in it. The only time in naval history that a flyer was buried at sea in his aircraft, Nov 5 ,1944. VAS intercut an aircraft with an FF marking being pushed off the starboard side for a moment. Was not Cosgrove's TBM. His aircraft is the one pushed off the stern.
Cosgrove can be seen at 5:28 on the left side in the pilot's jumpsuit with a white T shirt underneath.
