My first tip would be start slow. From Sprint events to Ironman. You should have a training schedule, One week before your race, do at least the whole race distance as a demo. Swim in the ocean at least once or twice before your race (if that's the case) to adapt yourself. Always time yourself, while you are swimming, biking or running.
