I love the use of close-up shots in the opening sequence. It even goes on to show close-ups of his blood being taken and typing. Focuses the audience on the small traces we leave behind. How a human can be equated to our tiniest cells.

Most underrated film ever!! My favorite and the onle movie I own. I've kept it with me across 3 continents and the soundtrack plays in my mind when I thing of pushing through and self sacrifice. This character (Vincent) is everything I want to be. If only I knew of something that I wanted that badly. Great film making and thought provoking on multiple levels.
@gattaca761 When the movie came out, genetic engineering was still in the relm of the almost unknown to the general public. It was heard of but not widedly understood by most.
Right on Jayakody. I see how it all fits perfectly with The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich too. He had step 1 covered but I don't know about step 2. Maybe because he had mastermind help. He definitely had a lot of secondary plans and actions and I think that helped him a lot too in becoming persistent.
Great movie about going for your dreams no matter what, even if you don't have the genes for it.
Very great movie. Inspirational and makes you think. Sort of like 1984. You get a sick feeling in your stomach that this might actually happen.
But even if it does, at least we know we can overcome it if we desire it enough!
If you like inspirational movies like this, you should read The Hidden Secret in Think and Grow Rich. It shows how one naturally achieves their goals and you can see how Ethan's character used it in this movie. It's nice to see the pieces fit perfectly together.
In a future " not too far " the New World Today is ordered by genetic engineering. According to a new special pattern human beings are divided into valid as conceived trough a DNA manipulated test tube and void, just the others born with old systems so regarded as pariahs. Wow ! Thats an interesting movie. A story of the " New World Today " according to Huxley: aseptic & totalitarian, with a soft camouflaged violence of power, made by a bizarre & original background.
if anyone notices, when the words are on the screen, all the A's, C's, T's, and G's are in bold. This is because everyone's DNA is made up of Adenine, Cytosine, Thymine and Guanine. GATTACA is also a pattern found in your DNA. Just in case you were wondering. :) oh, and this music is so incredibly beautiful.
@candygirl52793 your comment on Gattaca was extremely informative! I learned something new today.. most everyone watching this movie wouldn't have known what you pointed out. Thanks.
The titles may have been designed by imaginary forces but I designed and directed the falling junk. And Malik Sayeed shot them, before he was a director......
I just directed the shoot, I don't claim to understand the rationale behind the editorial decisions that were made later. But in this case, I think it's pretty obvious- a reminder to the viewer that, in the not-too-distant future, minutiae like fingernail clippings could have a new significance.
The falling skin, hair and nails are from Vincent as he tries to shed himself of his genetic identity before work. . .WOW! How many of us have to do something similar every day of our lives. And we aren't even trying to get into space!
The futuristic building at the end of this clip is the Marin County courthouse. I used to see it alot from the freeway when I lived around northern California. It was designed by Frank Loyd Wright.
Actually, this film is one of the most inspirational I have seen so far: when one watch it, one feels how impressive an human beeing can be; the message given in the film is timeless, though it espeacily refers to current situation which we have to encounter in the near futurer--such as the mentioned genetic engineering.
I loved this movie because it shows no matter how much people try to put you down, degrade you in any way, as long as you don't give in to the criticism, you believe in yourself and you WILL win. no matter what comes against you, you WILL win.
this movie kinda frightened me.cuz we'll never know when this might actually happen in the near future! that'd be terrible if evryones geneticallyy perfect!
hes cleaning himself so that he wont leave any part of loose skin or hair so the people wont find him invalid.Hes taking sample of genetics from the person whos hes pretending to be so he can be valid
I remember I watched this in Sicence Class after we did Bilogy I loved it but everyone in my class had such a low attention span and they hated it. This movie is so good
Unfortunately the average american audience can't follow a movie unless it has explosions every 5 minutes. "Don't make me think. I just want to enjoy myself." It's really pathetic.
Nowadays the status of people is no longer determined by their economical power but by their socio-cultural capital. The economical power and wealth is linked to this capital very closely. I think this kind of inequality among people is closer to the human nature than an inequality based just on economical values.
The whole score to this film is so moving. The strings are sufficiently plaintive to make up for the utter lack of passion in Ethan Hawke. He always comes across as a dim whit. Who cast Hawke in that role? The same genius who casts the talentless Adam Sandler in everything?
I find it hard to believe they wanted to portray lack of passion. His character had his legs sawed in order to pursue his dream. So they WERE trying to convey passion.
