You hear people whine...'oh the poor original artist, ie Glen Campell' when Elvis covers their song. Well it was the best thing that could ever happen to an artist, to have Elvis cover a song they wrote or sang. It drew attention to their recording to say the least! Furthermore it was the greatest honor...
"What is the highlight of my career? That's easy, Elvis recording one of my songs." -Bob Dylan
“If there is anything gentle on my mind its Elvis, he can easily wipe away a mountain off my shoulders and make me forget about this circus of life that’s going on around me.” -A Fan
Elvis could sing any song and make it his own. Here is a perfect example of his range and talent for making a song stand on its own. When Glen Campbell recorded this song it was good but it didn't make me ache inside knowing I'd never get to meet Elvis or make love to him. I certainly would have been his type young, thin, tan California surfer girl (displaced from NYC). Ya I'd have been his type and he sure the hell was mine; and millions of others type too.
@btoisawesome also, almost every song that is a "glenn campbell" song that i have heard covered is better than the campbell version, and every song i've heard covered by glenn campbell is much less impressive than the original.....so, i may not be a glenn campbell fan..........but, i do still believe that elvis butchered "suspicion"
which doesn't have anything to do wth mr. campbell, but.....still
And wasn't he a handsome son of a gun....jeez he was good lookin....Women went just banana's around him. especially at this time in late 60's and early 70's....the man was a God!!!!
Elvis was the epitome of music, he was the best looking man in music if not the world and people like Jackson and brad pit are merely just a shadow of the king. he had a voice to match his face and he sung from the heart with charisma dripping from his soul. there will never be another elvis
I read a comment somewhere that Elvis ruined it for other artists because every goddamn song he sang he sang better than everyone else... and it's true.
@Aidooosh Your comment is so OFF. A successful cover almost always puts the spotlight on the original resulting in increased sales. In many cases its draws attention to a song that was virtually unknown or long forgotten. Very few (misguided) people have complained about having one of their songs covered. It is common knowledge that you benefit from it. Btw covering songs in the 50s was the NORM. For example Blues Suede Shoes was covered over 30 times as was Hound Dog. That's just how it worked.
Not only one of my favorites, I'm sort of addicted to it. I tend to turn to it when I feel sort of blah..taxed. It is truly "gentle on my mind". It is a bit of a reprieve from reality...that haunting/mystical feel..with just enough romance and passion to stir the fires within. I've heard some say that listening to EP has a healing affect on them. I guess this song does for me...hence my always coming back to it. Another w/t a similar affect (but different) Long Black Limousine, a masterpiece
@oldcremona I disagree about syrupy..it's not done in a syrupy way. Elvis was a master artist and this was exactly the sound he wanted to create..making it unlike anything anyone has done or ever will do with the song. This is his signature..his rendition...and it's bloody amazing! Maybe you don't get that EP was a master artist..in fact the only man titled a master artist in 4 genres of music with induction into 4 music Halls of Fame and also recipient of the highest award in Blues Hall of fame
@TrueLight55 I haven't forgotten, my friend, that Elvis was a master artist. But it is possible that he didn't hit one out of the park every time he batted. I'm only suggesting that this tune, with lyrics like "keep my sleeping bag rolled up and stashed behind your couch" works better as a happy little banjo tune, ala the author, John Hartford. Have you heard his version?
Of course, it all boils down to opinion. I like apples, you like oranges. No harm there.
@oldcremona Agreed! yes it is a matter of taste. But I must respectfully say, his vocal ability...primarily mastery of different genres...has been defined as a phenomenon by scholars at Harvard& elsewhere for a reason. It has been said that he had "many voices"..this is unheard of, and requires vocal mastery we overlook because he makes it seem easy....but requires altering the sound and "feel" of the voice. He is truly THE master. And well I defend it b/c it is one of my favorite EP songs! ;)
@oldcremona I listen to both versions, Hartford's and El's, and I'm so torn between the two styles on which I like better. So I don't choose. Or maybe I do, because I listen to El's version a lot more. Both versions, unlike any other versions, puts me on those train tracks, miles and years away from that who's Gentle on my Mind.
The lyrics to this are 20th Century American poetry of the finest standard. It's a cinematic road trip across America and through the mind of the singer. jackiej61too - Beautiful lyrics and Elvis really does imbue an original country lovin' sound.
He's always, true, authentic, credible, incredible, a born natural lover of his songs and
singing, probably spending every day time with them. He's just real, credible and authentic, mentioning guitar, acoustic, electric, and some piano. It's a great summer song; diving off of a park pool diving board is hazard that I want to take - because it's gentle on my mind. Elvis, forever is too. Love, peace.
@TheUbiquitousPoppy : I'm so sorry but i i beg to differ with your statement. Should you really a huge fan of Elvis you will know that Elvis rock the whole world during his life time and even when he is death be it with his moves, his looks, his voice and which ever songs you wish him to sing even country songs. That is why he is call the KING.
In due respect to Glen, if u wish to compare Me with him, yes I would admit I'm not even close.
There is just nothing like the force of the style he puts into a song...master stylist...that's an understatement. Master vocalist... well that's too obvious. He just floors me...no he envelopes me
if there is anything gentle on my mind its elvis ,he can easily wipe away a mountain off my shoulders and make me forget about this circuse life thats going on around

I've always been such a huge fan of this very fun and brilliant Country song and I'm so very proud that Elvis decided to record it. I loved this video immensely, 10 Stars as always Jackie. Elvis forever.

I first heard this song in the 70's by Glenn Campbell but this one is much better because t'was Elvis. I like this one a lot.
