  • Ive done a little research and it seems to me that Project Lookingglass has been abandoned... Thats too bad, looks like a nice desktop.

  • i just got an eyegasm

  • What the hell is that? Whats the name?

  • Can't you read?

  • AGUANTE EL LG 3d!!!!

  • Well because nobody uses Linux and they would only be targeting less than 2% of the market. It's superior in every way except marketing. Try running a live disk or dual booting it, I started as a trial but now I've completely discarded Windows. The software companies taught you that you need them and Windows but pretty much every Windows program out there has an open source clone or a better version with the exception of games that are too expensive for most basement programmers to make.

  • But still, I don't like the 3D desktop stuff. Although both windows and linux has shown tendencies to be used with them, I think the power of the CPU must be used by the tools we have to use and not by the OS desktop. Even if it can be used in idle time, it will be unnecessary code running and power being converted to heat without need. The computer must be useful, not beautiful. Well, I know you all likes eyecandy. Everyone does.

  • NAAAAAW >:O

  • I'm using compiz-fusion with ubuntu linux and it uses the same anmount of cpu and ram in 3D as in 2D Mode.

  • yes, but GPU utilizations is also diffrent.

  • When I'm not donating my processing power with Boinc, I only use between 0-2% with full compiz-Fusion 3D cube fish tank and about 50 fish of various sizes and types. Plus if I wanted more efficiency I can just turn it off or change to another desktop enviornment so it's not that bad in Linux. I don't know about Windows and their shoddy programming. Why is Vista less "pretty" than Linux but uses huge amounts of RAM and processing just to keep it alive?

  • BigBananaMan, I think it is what happens when an open source software is doing well. You see, Linux can be useful for people that do not become bored with configuring its own system, and is pretty good. In the other hand, Windows became bloated and is easy to use. That certainly makes it heavy. And about compiz, I only load it when somebody asks me to show what is Linux with some eyecandy. Please, consider CPU at 2-3% is not everything. GPU uses power and goes hot, when you use 3D and the like.

  • lol.. you're worried about sacrificing the development of an aesthetically pleasing desktop to save energy.. that is a horrible idea, especially in a time when windows DOMINATES the aesthetics of any linux setup.

working with bugs and having to learn how to configure everything doesn't bother me.. it's dealing with that while looking at windows xp (or worse) graphics..

  • While I respect your opinion if you think that, I must say what I think... Some users think a beautiful look is a priority, others (me included), doesn't. And some people likes the visuals of Vista, and othes like KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment, Looking Glass etc.

I'm not worried in sacrificing the development of an aesthetically pleasing desktop. People are free to that. But as cpu and gpu cycles go in unnecessary stuff, the battery discharges faster and cpu loads are higher. If you like it, use it!

  • Just one thing... the cpu power I mentioned before is not about energy. I didn't make it clear (my bad), because of text length limitations :-( That was about processing power, as more things can be done in less time with pure 2D or simple 3D effects (at least now. Maybe in the future...)

  • i just don't like seeing discouraging words plastered all over attempts to bring linux into the modern aesthetics age. until linux can cater to the modern/casual PC user, who would never prefer the look of an older OS, it will continue to grow at its cripplingly slow rate..

  • I don' t discourage bringing Linux to "the modern aesthetics age", but I will, if it sacrifices performance. It can be done with simple effects, too. A system cannot be under heavy load only running the OS (as it happens with Vista). This is what I'm afraid. Today I *only* use (Slackware) Linux, and I would be very sad if Linux becomes so bloated. Fortunately, Compiz don't use 3D stuff while we are working. (are you linuxer, too?)

  • Bah, DE. Complete Desktop Environments are for "n00bs". Nah I'm just kidding man, although I love using Arch with Openbox, no DE. Infact, I browse/delete/create files using the Terminal. I don't even have a file browser installed. What's the point if I can use the command line effectively?

  • Thanks.

  • It just sounds like mk is jealous of your nerdiness. :)

  • :P Probably hehe. But really, I'm not much of a nerd haha. At least not around friends.

  • this is what you do to keep yourself entertained when your OS can't run any of the industry standard software packages

  • Everything I run on Linux meets standards and works better than anything on Windows in my experience.

You have clearly not done any research into it or even tried out the OS for that matter and as such are just a fanboy looking for a fight.

  • photoshop illustrator flash cubase 3dsmax maya logic autocad finalcut etc etc etc - yep i'm sure you have all those on linux.

  • There are OPEN SOURCE alternatives. But if we want to be "jailed" into windows proprietary software, we just fill a glass of "Wine" :)

(BTW, blender is better than maya and 3ds...)

  • While people uses Cubase on Windows, we can use Rosegarden on Linux. With the help of Hydrogen, it becomes so great!

While people uses PowerDVD or Windows Media Player, we use Totem, Mplayer, Xine, Noatun (do you miss kjofol?). I use Gimp in place of Photoshop. Dia is of great help, too. Blender is faster on Linux. Povray is very good on command line mode. Even on my Zoom G7.1ut works properly on Linux. Yes, I have an legal Cubase copy, but now I use Rosegarden on Linux.

  • buhahahah

Read first what is Ubuntu :P

    kern- 50mb ram

  • Even with all this running it will use less than a third of what Vista uses when idle.

  • Beautifully, quickly, comfortably.

  • Perfect.

  • I tried it out. It sucks. The res of the pics is bad, not intuitive and many glitches. Stick to beryl

  • Where do you download it?

  • Mmmm, I posted this 9 months ago so...I have no idea. Try synaptic of something like that. It must be there.

  • Very good!!

  • Hopefully it will be as good as its looking.

  • People don't realize how even basic 3D cards can scream pixels around like there is no tomorrow. I played with jogl-demos for a bit on a crappy ati 9250, and it totally rocked. User interfaces are not tapping into this amazing power. Looking Glass does, but how about creating a nice Linux distro with it? How about an Lookibuntu or something...

  • Why would you want to make a seperate distro with LG3D, you can install it on any existing distro to eiter replace or complement your current window manager

  • @a1mint compix fusion

  • Very useful... just think of the video hardware you'll need to make it work, and the re-training you'll need just to flip windows around...

I'm just too old for that crap...

  • Well, I run this on NVidia 7300 and integrated intel i915, which I think are one of the least powerful cards on the market.

  • @kor777 hahaha I am using a ATI 32MB Rage video card and I REALLY DOUBT this would run on my PC. hahahaha

  • This is great!

  • Looks great!!

  • Project Looking Glass by Sun Microsystems: Open Platform to Explore Innovative 3D User Interface

(search on google, I think I can't post the link here)

  • .. what is this?
