This is not a friend's ride where you wait for everyone who's crashed or has had mechanical problems. If Shleck had crashed then I'm sure Contador would have waited. How was Contador supposed to know that Shleck had dropped his chain? Did Shleck tell him that "hey wait for me I dropped my chain!!!". Did Shleck wait when Contador crashed this year in stage 1? Give me a break!
This is unsportsmanlike, but still. I believe that Andy would have done the same thing if it was Contador. They had a very important time trial a couple of days later where Andy needed as many second before it so that he could win.
And still if they would have gotten to the finish line, Contador would still have won overall since he got a lot of seconds on the time trial.
WATCH FORMULA1... IF THEY HAVE A PROBLEM SHOULD EVERYONE STOP AND WAIT????.. I DON`T THINK SO.... He made the mistake himself by changing gear when he attacked... Now He has got 1:30 ´cause of a crash and noone stopped to wait in the tour 2011 and hopefully Contador will get him again....go Contador
@KittyKranker Of course they're in a different league!! What I try to tell you is that there's no honor code in this case, because I had never seen anyone make that mistake while fighting for a TdF, it just never happens!!! Certainly he can get drunk, make love with two girls and then catch me, but I'll never make a mistake like that, I swear, seemed a juvenile!! And don't forget that he didn't wait contador neither his own brother some stages before. Did you see the tour or just this video??
@KittyKranker It's the only way for me to understand your comment. Schleck made a very big mistake, I am also an amateur cyclist and everyone knows how to change gear during a climb ... except Andy. Falling can be a matter of bad luck, a string output is poor quality and knowledge.
@KittyKranker If Schleck doesn't know how to ride a bike, it's not contador's fault. Schleck's seems the mistake of a boy who begins to ride. F**k you if you don't like spaniard people
for everyone out there who wants to compare contador to armstrong here is the perfect example of what separates them, lance waits for ullrich (and follows tour edicate) when he goes over the hangers and halfway down a cliff, than attacks once he has caught up. contador continues to attack even after he has seen schlek's chain break, bad sportsmanship and a confirmed drugcheat.
Don't be ridiculous guys, everybody wants to win in a competition! There are no saints here, be realistic. And loosing the chain could happen even to Alberto...
contador should have waited.... like the old school stars did back in the days.. guess he never learned anything from that... contador is and will allways bee an asshole on a bike... riding dirty @ ever chance he gets..

it wasnt here schleck lose the tour de france, but contadope should had the balls to stop when he knew schlecks chain popped :P he's a cheat and a drug user :P tour de france 2011 is going to all andys :)
I think noone is to blaime for what happened. Its comprehensible that Contador took his chance to get the yellow jersey. If you were in his position, what would you do? You train the whole year for this event and then you get the chance to get this jersey. As Andy says, such things happen and you cannot change them. Theyre both fantastic cyclists. Andy did a good job by trying to catch up with them after it. During the TdF you see that these two deserved the jersey. In the end Contador did it.
It was NOT a mechanical error ... it was a RIDER ERROR. A bad gear change using a bad cog combination. If a rider were to brake badly on a corner and ride into a tree ... could he blame Contador for that too?
A true champion is decided by how well they perform under pressure. That is the deviding line, period. At the most important moment in his career, Andy Schleck made a mistake - he made a bad gear change - and that's why he's not TDF champion.
If equipment failure deserves others to wait for cyclist with the problem, then make all racers use same make and same style of bicycle. Then equipment won't be an advantage and it won't be disadvantage either. But, some are coming out on top BECAUSE of equipment advantages.

Guys, get this. Alberto has only really won one Tour. His first tour was handed to him because the guy ahead was on drugs, and even after the time tril, at this pace, Andy would've been in yellow. Besides, Andy rode back from a crash(stage 2) and All Alberto did was chase him. In my opinion, Andy beats Alberto 3 to 1.
@xstyle27 well you have to get the fact taht contador won the 2008 tour because the guy he was competing against was not a sportman maybe a crook or something else but a sportman .u can not compare a clean cyclist to someone who is doping so it's rediculous to say taht he didn't win the 2008 tour .and this year even if shlek didn't dropped his chain ,contador was ahead of shlek by 31 seconds on saturday during the speed trial stage.meaning contador could get the yellow be reasonable
@chnofl Ok, you kep your thoughts. I did everything I could to analyze this, and trust me, without the chain pop, Schleck would've been ahead. Schleck was the better man this year. Contador got caught up in nothing, and yet Schleck still had his shot. Besides, Contador didn't get stage wins, so yeah. Reason with me on THAT one.
@xstyle this year contador was not as strong as he was the last year .but andy was never able to attack him in the mountains .and u can see this clealy during the 17 stage in tourmalet .shlek himself said taht it was impossible for him to get rid of contador in tourmalet .yet shlek promised to take revenge but simply he was not able to beat contador in tourmalet .shlek even asked contador to let him win the 17 stage and contador didn't do any efforts to prevent andy from winning stage 17
@xstyle27 so if shlek was stronger tahn contador he could easily eliminate him in tourmalet .and we all expected andy to deepen the gap between him and contador everybody underestimated contador .but contador didn't give up .he kept chasing andy till the finish line .on the contrary contador was able last year to attack andy in the mountains and he was ahead of him by 41 seconds .andy won the yellow jersey because he didn't wait for contador in the early stages of the tour .
Since when did racing become a slave to unwritten codes of conduct? In an equipment dependent sport such as cycling, a broken bike should be part of the game. The whole BS about "it should be rider vs rider, not bike vs bike" reeks of sour grapes from Schleck fanboys. As much as I despise Contador and the Astana squad, he was just taking advantage of an opening that HIS OPPONENT GAVE HIM. Waiting is not in the rules. Schleck knew that and he dealt with it. End of story.
Contador did nothing wrong there at 1st ! ... ofc when he was radio informed he could correct the situation, I am just wondering if it wasn't a bit too late (as Menchov was there aswell). Cannot blame Andy loose his calm and fix chain issue asap (usually 3-5 sec) as competitions makes adrenalin rush and cyclists loose their temper...
@Nigol66 Well, it has been made public that Schleck made a bad shift that resulted in Conty taking the lead!!! Better learn to shift before next year's Tour!!!! Other than that, I applaude Andy's being a man about the entire deal!!
@DenverDetail yep, I agree but Conty doesn't deserve the douchebag tag. Crap happens and on this stage I felt sorry for Andy and he did take it well. Great tour this year. This has really fired me up to ride even more! :o)
@ForbiddianSC Can one know if the other cyclist (leader as you say) don't need another bike or someting ? ... looking at this movie Alberto did nothing wrong when he passed Andy... ofcourse afterwards things could be corrected if he could have an agreement with Menchov and SAnchez - all 3 should have waited for Andy (in my opinion)
@DenverDetail no! the proffessional gear should be able to take any shifting at any intensity and it didnt. Thats why Bjarne Riis himself tested the bike afterwards and he had a very serious talk with specialyzed (the bike manufacturer)...
In the video you can see that Contador turns his head just before the Schleck's fail, so he did not aware of what happened. Anyway, I can teach Schleck to change gears for a low price. Memo, gafe.
even if contador waited for him, andy would still end up in 2nd after the individual TT. instead of andy being behind 39 seconds. he would be behind by 31 seconds, assuming they both finish together at stage 16, which would be very likely, seeing as neither of the riders can break away from the other at col de tormalet.
Complete cowardly act and as unsportsmanlike as it gets by Contador. Then he compounded his unsportsmanship by lying about it and then retracting his lie and apologizing because he knew what he did was bush league.
It's an unwritten law that you don't attack when your rival is in trouble or having problems . You've seen it in the years when Armstrong & Ulrich waited for each other. Not saying Contador isn't a worthy winner but we missed what would have been a great battle in that stage. The record books will show that Contador won 2010 Tour de France. But they will always be a asterisks (*) after his name as a result.
only the american media find this to be a problem...But the european media call it racing. Andy miss fired on his shifting by mistake. That doesn't mean that the Champion of the tour de France has to wait on account of his mistake.
You all need to more about racing, and stop being little winers just because this is the same man who put an end to the Armstrong!!! ! Andy didn't crash, did he????
@duveimperial your an idiot. If by "European Median" you mean Spanish media then yes that makes sense now doesn't it...I'm pretty sure everyone after this stage thought contador was a big flaming king of douchebaggery. Besides it doesn't even matter anymore schleck was really pissed but now he and contador are obviously cool about it.
What brand name of shifters Andy uses? That will be a good comercial. I ride specialize and I shift with...is it Shimano? Campagnollo? I don't think so. it is rather new brand made out of plastic or somenthing like that.
Where is the video that Frank crashes and breakes his collar bone in the cobbolstones and his brother takes of like a rocket being pulled by Fabio. It was an exiting Tour, the two champs where very close in strength but not equal. Contador was a little stronger and that is why he won. This is not a race of honor or virtue. It is a race of endurance speed, preparation and who gets there first with out dopping, or dopping with out getting caught.
Contador is a cheater!! He didn't deserve to win! WHAT ABOUT THE HONOR CODE!!!! If a cyclist crashes or something happens to your bike you stop and wait for him not speed ahead!!!!! WTF! ASSHOLE!!!!! CHEATER!
Anyone know if Carrefour is selling the red polka dot King of the Mountains jersey? I have seen it on t.v. with some fans wearing them. I want that jersey. We don't have Carrefour in the states though. :( Any feedback would be appreciated.
@PinchinTheBear Whether or not it was fair that he attacked on a mechanical is of course debatable. I believe people have the right to be upset with Contador because he LIED about not seeing Andy's problem.
i agree with liggett on this one... no special privileges for the yellow. andy did not wait for contador in the cobbles when he took a fall in the frank fiasco. andy had cancellara drag his ass all the way to the line while contador was solo time trialing nearly the whole way. andy cross chained and paid for it. he panicked. and still he was only 11 seconds back going over the top... don't hide behind the yellow jersey.
Contador is a disgrace of a man. He can talk whatever he wants now, but the fact is that he knew about Andy technical problems, and he behaved like no sportsman.
I dont understand how Schleck can still be friends with contador after contador deliberately takes advantage of Schlecks misfortune. I would have said "dont talk to me ever again", then I`d have attacked him at every opportunity. contador clearly has very few morals. contador; "sportsmanship, whats that"? contador must have been REALLY afraid of Schleck. Hope Schleck beats him next year
what a shame that this looks like being the deciding factor in this years tour..
nothing against contador but i was willing on andy schleck today and in the last mountain stage the other day.. basically theres nothing between the 2 ..
theyre of virtually the same ability.. its just a shame that there has to be a loser schleck will win the tour one day and he'll deserve to as well.
I don't understand how Contador 'cheated'. Did he make Schleck's chain come off? If a driver in F1 has a mechanical problem, will all the other drivers wait for him to get his car fixed before continuing the race? No. Why does only the yellow jersey wearer get the benefit of this bizarre unwritten rule? If Contador's chain came off, should Schleck have waited? I understand that it is difficult to break away in cycling. If I was Contador I would do the same, except I would not apologise for it.
@Tomid I agree all the way! It's clear that many pro's in the cycling world are not only defending Contador's counter-attack of Andy Schleck, they do so as a matter of defending the integrity of pro-bicycle racing as a whole. I've pointed this out before, and I repeat: At the time Andy attacked he was by himself having asked all his teammates to push the peloton to the point of exhaustion. Astana still had two riders with Andy. This was a big risk for Andy/Saxo and he knew it. He blew it.
@railman55 I'm beginning to understand why so many people think Contador cheated. Because in cycling it is difficult to break away, and this was Contador's best opportunity to do so. And because you don't want to win the Tour because your closest rival had a mechanical fault. But still, Schleck could bolt on a massive thing to stop the chain coming off, but that would slow him down. He gambled on the equipment he uses, like every rider. He lost. Why only stop the race for yellow jersey mishaps?
Albertos words: "In those moments all you think about is to go as fast as you can." "For me Fair Play is very important." These two sentences don't go together. In times of electronical communication Alberto could have find out within seconds what happend to Andy. Shame on him. Obviously he took this opportunity because he was driven by ego and felt he can't beat Andy in fair racing. I am disgusted by that behaviour. I agree with the audiance which was booing when he got the yellow jersey.
Contador the best cyclist of all time XD , he can't even win The tour de france in a fair way. Wtf is he going to be the best cyclist of all time. If you take personallity into account he's at the bottom of society
I like Andy Schleck but I don't think he will ever win the Tour de France. He lacks the fire that really pushes some of the past winners. After this incident I thought he was going to dig deep and use his anger to take back the yellow in the mountains. Don't get me wrong he is a great rider it's just my opinion.
world cup 3 times 1-0 spain three times : offside goal or red card for enemy call it luck call it whatever you want . call andys bad luck whatever you want spain wins alot this year and has good sporters but the way .................... cheap
watching the start, i see that contador was catching up to andy before the chain derailed and lucky he didnt slow down as andy wasn't able to get the chain on 1st go. To bad for Andy but its a Race and its all about the time not the friendliest man on the bike. Contador did what he had to do and thats win the dam race and Andy just a sore looser and its. OLE 4 Spain
Lots of boos coming out of the crowd. For good reason.

Guys, get this. Alberto has only really won one Tour. His first tour was handed to him because the guy ahead was on drugs, and even after the time tril, at this pace, Andy would've been in yellow. Besides, Andy rode back from a crash(stage 2) and All Alberto did was chase him. In my opinion, Andy beats Alberto 3 to 1.
xstyle27 1 year ago
@xstyle27 well you have to get the fact taht contador won the 2008 tour because the guy he was competing against was not a sportman maybe a crook or something else but a sportman .u can not compare a clean cyclist to someone who is doping so it's rediculous to say taht he didn't win the 2008 tour .and this year even if shlek didn't dropped his chain ,contador was ahead of shlek by 31 seconds on saturday during the speed trial stage.meaning contador could get the yellow be reasonable
chnofl 1 year ago
@chnofl Ok, you kep your thoughts. I did everything I could to analyze this, and trust me, without the chain pop, Schleck would've been ahead. Schleck was the better man this year. Contador got caught up in nothing, and yet Schleck still had his shot. Besides, Contador didn't get stage wins, so yeah. Reason with me on THAT one.
xstyle27 1 year ago
@xstyle this year contador was not as strong as he was the last year .but andy was never able to attack him in the mountains .and u can see this clealy during the 17 stage in tourmalet .shlek himself said taht it was impossible for him to get rid of contador in tourmalet .yet shlek promised to take revenge but simply he was not able to beat contador in tourmalet .shlek even asked contador to let him win the 17 stage and contador didn't do any efforts to prevent andy from winning stage 17
chnofl 1 year ago

End of story.
lightnangles 1 year ago 2
Contador did nothing wrong there at 1st ! ... ofc when he was radio informed he could correct the situation, I am just wondering if it wasn't a bit too late (as Menchov was there aswell). Cannot blame Andy loose his calm and fix chain issue asap (usually 3-5 sec) as competitions makes adrenalin rush and cyclists loose their temper...

Nigol66 1 year ago
@Nigol66 Well, it has been made public that Schleck made a bad shift that resulted in Conty taking the lead!!! Better learn to shift before next year's Tour!!!! Other than that, I applaude Andy's being a man about the entire deal!!
DenverDetail 1 year ago
@DenverDetail yep, I agree but Conty doesn't deserve the douchebag tag. Crap happens and on this stage I felt sorry for Andy and he did take it well. Great tour this year. This has really fired me up to ride even more! :o)
Nigol66 1 year ago
@DenverDetail It's still an equipment error, and you're not supposed to take advantage of a leader due to equipment failure.
ForbiddianSC 1 year ago
@ForbiddianSC Can one know if the other cyclist (leader as you say) don't need another bike or someting ? ... looking at this movie Alberto did nothing wrong when he passed Andy... ofcourse afterwards things could be corrected if he could have an agreement with Menchov and SAnchez - all 3 should have waited for Andy (in my opinion)
Wizzkid666 1 year ago
@ForbiddianSC Wasn't an equipment error!!! It was made very public during stage 19 that the error was shifting by the rider!!
DenverDetail 1 year ago
@DenverDetail no! the proffessional gear should be able to take any shifting at any intensity and it didnt. Thats why Bjarne Riis himself tested the bike afterwards and he had a very serious talk with specialyzed (the bike manufacturer)...

even if contador waited for him, andy would still end up in 2nd after the individual TT. instead of andy being behind 39 seconds. he would be behind by 31 seconds, assuming they both finish together at stage 16, which would be very likely, seeing as neither of the riders can break away from the other at col de tormalet.
kennybenny 1 year ago
Before runnning the Tour Schleck should learn to use de gears. Good luck next time, gilipollas!

Complete cowardly act and as unsportsmanlike as it gets by Contador. Then he compounded his unsportsmanship by lying about it and then retracting his lie and apologizing because he knew what he did was bush league.
ghostzapper2006 1 year ago
It's an unwritten law that you don't attack when your rival is in trouble or having problems . You've seen it in the years when Armstrong & Ulrich waited for each other. Not saying Contador isn't a worthy winner but we missed what would have been a great battle in that stage. The record books will show that Contador won 2010 Tour de France. But they will always be a asterisks (*) after his name as a result.
Regoeire 1 year ago
only the american media find this to be a problem...But the european media call it racing. Andy miss fired on his shifting by mistake. That doesn't mean that the Champion of the tour de France has to wait on account of his mistake.
You all need to more about racing, and stop being little winers just because this is the same man who put an end to the Armstrong!!! ! Andy didn't crash, did he????
duveimperial 1 year ago
@duveimperial your an idiot. If by "European Median" you mean Spanish media then yes that makes sense now doesn't it...I'm pretty sure everyone after this stage thought contador was a big flaming king of douchebaggery. It is a race of endurance speed, preparation and who gets there first with out dopping, or dopping with out getting caught.
pedricolas 1 year ago
Contador is a cheater!! He didn't deserve to win! WHAT ABOUT THE HONOR CODE!!!! If a cyclist crashes or something happens to your bike you stop and wait for him not speed ahead!!!!! WTF! ASSHOLE!!!!! CHEATER!

@PinchinTheBear Whether or not it was fair that he attacked on a mechanical is of course debatable. I believe people have the right to be upset with Contador because he LIED about not seeing Andy's problem.
JJ4186 1 year ago
i agree with liggett on this one... no special privileges for the yellow. andy did not wait for contador in the cobbles when he took a fall in the frank fiasco. andy had cancellara drag his ass all the way to the line while contador was solo time trialing nearly the whole way. andy cross chained and paid for it. he panicked. and still he was only 11 seconds back going over the top... don't hide behind the yellow jersey.

Contador is a disgrace of a man. He can talk whatever he wants now, but the fact is that he knew about Andy technical problems, and he behaved like no sportsman.
gjorgji111 1 year ago
I dont understand how Schleck can still be friends with contador after contador deliberately takes advantage of Schlecks misfortune. I would have said "dont talk to me ever again", then I`d have attacked him at every opportunity. contador clearly has very few morals. contador; "sportsmanship, whats that"? contador must have been REALLY afraid of Schleck. Hope Schleck beats him next year

nothing against contador but i was willing on andy schleck today and in the last mountain stage the other day.. basically theres nothing between the 2 ..

Tomid 1 year ago
@Tomid I agree all the way! It's clear that many pro's in the cycling world are not only defending Contador's counter-attack of Andy Schleck, they do so as a matter of defending the integrity of pro-bicycle racing as a whole. I've pointed this out before, and I repeat: At the time Andy attacked he was by himself having asked all his teammates to push the peloton to the point of exhaustion. Astana still had two riders with Andy. This was a big risk for Andy/Saxo and he knew it. He blew it.
railman55 1 year ago
@railman55 I'm beginning to understand why so many people think Contador cheated. Because in cycling it is difficult to break away, and this was Contador's best opportunity to do so. And because you don't want to win the Tour because your closest rival had a mechanical fault. But still, Schleck could bolt on a massive thing to stop the chain coming off, but that would slow him down. He gambled on the equipment he uses, like every rider. He lost. Why only stop the race for yellow jersey mishaps?
Tomid 1 year ago
god damn, contador won the tour because of this stage
if it hadn't been for that chain problem, he wouldn't have lost those 39 seconds, but would have also gained time over contador ;)
it's a shame he won like that, next year schleck will kick his ass!

I like Andy Schleck but I don't think he will ever win the Tour de France. He lacks the fire that really pushes some of the past winners.
