What kicking side this was, and still is. Gets me groovin' when hear it. I heard a Kool & the Gang band member on a radio show explain how this title came about. An interesting and funny story.
Prior to Public Enemy's use of this joint,I first heard it through my moms and my aunt just when I was very young at the time it came out. I wish urban radio in NYC would play more of something like this instead of most of the bullshit that's out now. Thanks for posting this by the way.
is this from live at the hollywood bowl ?...i loaned it and never saw it again...my intro to cool n' the gang circa 1971 thanks rapsmackcrate & youtube
@negronthagreat Hmm seems that I hurt a asshole member of the hip hop generation feelings, WELL TOO DAMN BAD ! First , I CAN RELATE to hip hop ,think Curtis Blow, Kool Mo Dee,The Sugar Hilll Gang,Grandmaster Flash & the Furious 5. THEIR lyrics were CLEAN, UPLIFTING, & FUN , unlike todays CRAP about bitches, hoes, strip clubs, niggers, killing etc. How would YOU feel if your kids (if you have any) LISTENED and rap about this? Yes I HATE todays rap crap and I CONGRADULATE yesteryears TRUE artist !
@Lar112 they did kind of fall off when JT's soft ass came along. I seen him perform solo @ Wingate Park & you should have seen the dissappointment on his face when he didnt get the reception he thought he was going to get. Thats bad when you cant get any love at a free concert LMAO
@mrslideinsideu2 After James Brown at this time they were probably the number 2 act after him!!!. So it was a major turn of events when he joined. Don't get me wrong I know they did it to crossover into the mainstream but the loyal funk fanbase were turned off.
i wish real instruments like this prevailed on the radio like it did when i was a kid. nowadays, "producers" have to rely on old beats to sell their wares. that's fine for some, but for me it comes down to good old-fashioned talent, ingenuity, skill & soul. put that in ya loop.........(and repeat it, repeat it, repeat it...)
rapsmackcrates - Since you've made my day/week/month is there any way you can put up the title cut from Kool & The Gang? Miss that bad one ... vinyl is totally shot
Guy's it take people like us that we're there when it was being created to keep it a live!! I'm a drummer from this era and my playing to this date continues to harrness the raw straight up funk from that time. Thank god for youtube!!
Man, can we understand the greatness of artists like these from back in the day? They didn't sample, they created the beats from scratch! I'm from this era. We almost took it for granted that the music would never end. It's on life support now but hopefully the patient will survive.
I remember being in the crowd when they first did this song live at the RKO Albe in downtown Brooklyn and I was simply blown away and here it is 100 years later and it still kicks butt!!!
I thought I was the only person who remembered this. Ahh,when the break comes, you had to have your best"get down" move, which back in "74" was straight from Soul Train. Oh the quarter parties I could tell you of..... Now if I could find Archie Bell and The Drells from Houston Texas, who not only sing, but dance as good as they want!
Agreed ! I'm not sure if that is what is called in music terms as "The Bridge" but it is funky as hell at 2:57. The horns ,the guitar, and that funky drum beat kicks ass on that.
i first heard this piece on cool and the gang live at the hollywood bowel in 1971..."friends" releived me of the LP way back when, this is the first time i've heard it in years...thank god for you tube!!!
This is one of those tracks that, when it 1st appeared, carried a message that I knew was going to resound through the ages. this song is just as valid today as it was when it was released! And what a groove!
These Lyrics are soooooo relevent NOW!!!!! The music is timeless!!!! love the band.....

This was way better than when they got with JT.
I know they had to get they money but I feel they could have been as big as P Funk on thier own terms.
Ladiies nite,Celebrate,&Fresh ...well
That's when they fell off.
