  • Have yoy tried the swisstool by victorinox?

  • @Diegosurvivor

yeah they are no joke thats what i have its awesome. i have the black one its a little pricey about 120 dollars but, its extremely well built sorta like a swiss watch hate to make that comparison but, it works :)

  • Dave, love your stuff. I have a question regarding compasses, Being a former military man, I am curious as to why you dont use a Military Lensatic compass? I am looking at shelling at for a decent compass and could use the opinion =) Thanks

  • Bucks Buck Tool Model/series 360, my choice bought new in '96 made in USA no rust, super sharp. No longer made, but go buy a used one IF you can find they are available sometimes. I would not part with mine. Fishing buddy's new leatherman almost lasted on a three day fish trip/campout. I would not trust my life to a L-man or G-ber [all CHINA made crap].

  • Is the Haversack no longer available?

  • Leatherman multitools blow gerber multitools out of the water any day ! Superior steel :)

  • It is very interesting to see how your views have changed over the years. Nothing bad, just very interesting.

  • I'm looking for the video that shows the EDC on the D ring, but can't find it. Is it on one of the preferred carry series?

    Thanks

  • Whats is the exact name of that compass Dave and about how much? I'm lookin into purchasing one but seen a few ranger compasses out there and wasn't sure which one to get...money is not an issue when it comes to good gear..I will save and sacrifice for it! Thanks.

  • Guyot designs, btw

  • What about KIFARU stuff for packs Dave, have you looked at them?

  • I was wondering where I can find a "Guide Design" water bottle like the one you have Dave. I am 13 and trying to put together a little kit for the weekends when I go to the woods and stuff like that. Thanks man!

  • @simplesurvival98 it's Guyot Designs

  • @ToddIngram1000

got that... thought dave said "guide design"

    thanks though

  • Hey Dave, I'm assuming Guyot Design went out of business because everything on their website is out of stock, and trying to find the Guyot Design Nalgene bottle on eBay or Amazon seems near to impossible. So since it has been nearly 2 years since you posted this video, have you come across any other single-wall structure canteen that is as durable as the Guyot Design in this video? The Klean Kanteen just doesn't cut it for me.

  • Just a note on those Harver Sacks...They go FAST. And they are awesome.

  • Why are you not going to do videos any longer????

  • @shippen2010 he still does videos. go to his channel. Im pretty sure he stopped for a while because he was shooting dual survival

  • Another great video thanks. What do you think of the Victornox camper ? I really like mine but i really like my leatheman juice as well.

  • Dave "Your humble opinion" is more than likely the best advice out there.

  • Alice packs are sooo uncomfortable.... I love mine. lol

  • Thanks a lot for a great vid:) as always :D Where can I get one of those Guyot design bottles... I was looking almost everywhere.. and i think its near a miracle to get one of those:( that's the most perfect water bottle I ever saw.. then why they don make it any more?!? greetings from Poland and big thanks for help:)

  • i dont have a nuff mony to by a slingshot we you sponser me so i can make a video.

  • i sell that tool in many styles

  • is he still teaching?

  • @SaggyBawlz check his current vids and/or his facebook page. they just bought a big piece of property to teach on, plus they've been most recently in NC for a training weekend.

  • It's a slingshot band u can get it at walmart

  • where can i get the rubber neck retention bands? is it sold in your store or can i get it somewhere else? is it propitiatory to your company? thanks for great videos and i am big fan of dual survival, good luck on both!

  • Hey Dave, thanks for such great videos man, really enjoy all of them so far.

Question, what do you think about including in the backpack a .22LR Marlin Papoose or maybe an US Henry AR-7 for hunting small game?

  • Haha I was watching duel survival on tv and watching this

  • why was he not able to shoot videos anymore?

  • @MasterArcher97 because of his contract with discovery channel.. dual survival. he wasn't allows to post videos of himself while recording for DS.

  • @guardians38 oh:/

  • Don't worry Dave

Your students and fans will support your adventure

  • @foroke1 This was made in late 2009. He was probably in the process of Dual Survival Season 1

  • hey dave what kind of boots would you recommend for tropical climate? and should i wear socks too?

  • And the reason you won't be able to post videos is because you'll be in the process of Dual Survival season 3 right?

  • I use a disposable paint drop cloth.... its 2mil thick and 9x12 , and it only costs about 1.50, and takes very minimal space up in my bag, great for rain collection too

  • I keep hearing about him not being able to videos for much longer, where is he going?

  • @BladeMaster303x filming dual survival

  • we will miss your videos dave, be safe out there brother

  • Just FYI Dave, that's not the 32oz Backpacker, that's the 38oz Standard. Sadly VERY difficult to get hold of nowadays..

  • Doesn't the lids burn on the stainless bottles?

  • @kyletango You don't leave them on when you have the bottle on the fire.

  • @kyletango you take the lid off

  • Hey I was wondering what type of boots where you wearing during the KY episode this season? My wife and I are in disagreement. And I loved the fact you kept the hat, I would have done the same with my fav. Keep up the good work.

  • Awesome love this stuff!!!

  • what use is the slot in the awl? i dont no what it b good 4. love ur vids thx karen

  • alice is better

  • can they gust make a stainless steel nalgene

  • Have you tried any of the Eberlestock back packs? I have ben hearing a lot of good stuff about them.

  • Hey Dave, how are you? love you and Cody's show! Please keep it on, and the youtube reviews, etc., too.Love the BH Knives knife you traded my friend Mike (from Sevierville TN,) You keep it real, you do the things a real "guy" would do, course, you're a bit tougher than most guys, from what I've seen. Thanks, hope to see you around for a long time!

  • How come you are not going to post vids on Youtube? Are you retiring? Be sad to see you not up here on a regular basis, man. You'll be missed.

  • @goldenscales lol he can now it was due to some crazyness with his show

  • @goldenscales He's going to be on Dual Survival on Discovery

  • @ToddIngram1000 I'd posted that question some time ago. Good show that, those two are hilarious together! Could you imagine Dave and Iris doing a show like that? Lol!!

  • I bought the haversack from the pathfinder school, they sew the logo right through both layers of the flap out of laziness, taking away 40% of the flaps storage capacity. Stupid way to sew a bag Dave. Please fix that.

  • @johnmonk66 We now fixed that issue my man, thank you.

  • what kinda a pack do u carry dave

  • Dave, you mention backpacks and haversacks, but what are your thoughts on belt pouches? I'm going backpacking soon and am planning on using belt pouches to keep various items on me at all times. So, what are your thoughts? Hope you can answer this!

  • hey dave, I just wondered what cind if pants are you usually use in dual survival? and by the way i love the show, and i`m a big fan of you:)

  • @Dave : I've been looking for a good snugpak for about a year now and never seem to find one. Can you refer me to site that might carry them? A friend of mine let me borrow his for a trip I took recently and I fell in love with the rocket pack. Do you know of any good sites that might carry them, Cheaper than dirt doesn't seem to so i'm lost lol.

  • @SurvivorsGuild google

  • I would reccomend the British Army Bergen for a backpack, i've used mine for years and it's always worked brilliantly.

  • It is sad the tv show didn't let him use any of this stuff. They think we all want to see shows about "man alone on mountain with only baking soda and a vacuum"...Let's get together guys and tell discovery we want a show about Dave and his basic kit. Let them show how responsible people like us, people who NEVER go out without a basic kit, can survive harsh environments.

If enough of us ask, maybe they will make an episode like this for us.

  • I WAS WONDERING IF YOU STILL CARRY THIS FISHING/TRAPPING KIT THAT YOU EXPLAIN IN THIS VIDEO AND IF SO HOW DID IT WORK ON SOME OF THE ADVENTURES YOU HAVE BEEN ON?

  • @masterthomas919 It appears your caps lock is broken. You might want to fix that.

  • @NarutoFireFox84 what???

  • @survival919 He was unnecessarily using all caps. That either means hes retarded or has a broken caps lock. I was being kind and assuming his caps lock was broken.

  • Dave, on Dual Survivor you mention how difficult it is to walk in a given North-South-East-West direction without deviating. What are your thoughts on adding a button compass to your neck knife sheath? They weigh next to nothing and as you trek along in the woods you can simply lift your neck knife up every so often and confirm your direction. It will never take the place of a good compass like the one in your video; but for ease of use what's your opinion?

  • @KEM451 FYI I bought some button compasses to try this out. I found out that when I simply placed a compass directly on my Mora neck sheath the compass was affected by the steel of the knife blade. I plan on mounting it on rubber inter-tube rather than directly on the sheath; hopefully this will solve the problem. If anyone puts a compass on your sheath be aware the knife blade may possibly throw off your compass.

  • @KEM451 FYI follow up. The rubber inter-tube, even 3 layers of it will not prevent the knife blade from throwing off the compass. Guess it was a bad idea on my part.

  • Dave what firestarter would you recomend for Ease of starting and long term(lots of firestarting) for like a civilian SERE situation? Something that will work relatively easy with out wet fire wood or epoxy empreg materials......Advise is GRATLEY aprciated.

  • @HadesmyBoa569 the strikeFORCE FIRE STARTER BY UTS. WATCH PREFERED CARRY PART 1

  • dave is your harver sack about the same size as a claymore bag?

  • i've got an old victorinox tool--it's a heavy bastard but it's put together and i trust it--had it for 15yrs.

  • i got a guyot bottle for 10$

  • Hey high speed thats some pertinent information. Thanks.

  • leatherman is were its at

  • miss dave

  • You may not be able to make new YOUTUBE videos currently, but those of us who consider you a friend and mentor, will be waiting for the moment when that day is over. You rock, Keep up the Great Work-Whether on Dual Survival or YouTube!!!

  • I'm tryin to grab some of this gear you recommend. Is the water bottle on the video the backpacker or standard model? The ones I'm finding that look like it are the 38 oz standard model. The backpacker tapers off toward the bottom. (could just be a new design, I have no idea) I grabbed the GSI cup and would like to know if the bottles will fit correctly.

  • Can anyone please help remind me which video Dave talks about how to make his sling at 8:20? Thank you. Dual Survivor has been a pleasure to watch, congrats on the show Dave.

  • That haversack reminded me of the old gasmask bag my dad always used to carry his fishing gear around.

  • y has he stopped making videos :( and what is this adventure or something.

  • @Alan1600

Dave has been working for the Discovery channel on a project called "Dual Survivor". He is currently back stateside and should be posting more videos soon.

  • great video dave. I have3 a snugpak sleeka and i love it. its extremely durable and comfortable, it is a little smaller (35L) but it really helps me to pack smarter so i would highly recommend it for people starting out

  • I wonder why he had to quit making videos I hope he is alright

  • There is also the Snugpak Bergen. It's the exact same as the Rocket pack but bigger. I'm pretty happy with it.

  • Amak503 ! He is the man! Dave Canterbury! He is the one who´s invited all the other people to post on HIS channel! WE MISS YOU DAVE!!

  • @giutoniolo Hey buddy. Love your channel too!!

  • Great videos. What is his own channel called? I know this is one shared by the pathfinder school but i like this guy so much i want to subsribe to his channel. Could you please tell me

    Thanks

  • @Amak503

This is his channel. While away on a project with Discovery channel, he has been having students of the Pathfinder school and others post videos on his channel.

  • Hey Dave, I have been meaning to ask what you view is on God and how He fits into place with survival

  • @calld2serve me to im just curious????????????

  • @calld2serve jeeze thats a little personal, it doesnt really matter does it

  • Im guessing that it bothers you, but I serve the Living God and I am curious how Dave feels about it and no its not personal

  • youre asking about his realigion on a out door self reliance video thats off topic and pretty personal. look it doesnt bother me that you feel that you need to spread the word of god. but this is the internet and nobody should really care about what religion he has faith in. but if you must know id say hes probably christian or catholic

  • Well, I didn't actually ask what relegion he was, I asked what his view on God was and how it fits into survival. He may not believe, or he may be a believer. That was irrelevant to my question.

  • why are not going to post videos?:-(

  • because he got a show on the discovery channel and the copyright stuff

  • that's so Cool do you win it will come on

  • it sounds like he's going into the wilds for awhile.

  • @TheGods1marine I love your channel!

  • @crazyoutdoors556 Thanks glade ya like it.

    Reggie:~)

  • hey dave, whats your program gonna be called on the dicovery channel

  • ithink it is "dual survival"

  • The LMF ferro rods do come with a striker But it seems you don't use them.

  • we will miss you Dave:(

  • @honkeyhat

    why is he going?

  • @TheJayjam He wasn't going to be putting vids on YT for a while.

BTW that comment was posted a year ago.

  • @ausurvival

Yeah I saw that the comment was one year old right after I posted my question

I was just wondering "WHY" wasn´t he able to upload in a while was he on a survival trip?

  • @TheJayjam Something to do with the contract with Discovery or something. Can't remember.

  • Hey Dave, Klean Kanteen does make a wide-mouth version of their bottles!

  • a study was done on out door water containers it was found that a bottle with a large opening promoted better hydration that one with a small opening because you tend to drink more

    from a large opening bottle

  • I have used Leatherman and Gerber Multi-Tools, but so far the best value and craftmanship comes with the Victorinox Multitools (Swisstool, not the Spirit), including the tools you have mentioned to be very important for you. Could you give any hints/details about your future "1-5year" project, or is this undisclosed?

  • If you get a chance try a Berghaus Vulcan pack.

I like my weight on my hips.

  • what would you recomend for a 25-30 liter pack

  • My first post, but dave i watched u get sold but u have never soldout! I respect u and u have given me inspiration, it is really a beautiful thing, brother!

  • Dave, Which model Silva Ranger do you pref? 530CL? I see a variety out there and want to get one to try it out.. Thanks for making these gear vids before you head out.

  • I hope I never see you eat bear droppings, rotten animals or go for an ice water swim, shear cliff rock climbing w/o a rope and call that good survival strategy just for TV ratings. Keep it real because someone watching you is going to end up doing something they learned on TV in a real survival situation. Don't need any kids dying because they learned to take unnecessary risk from their TV superhero. You are an excellent professor and I hope you continue to grow in the right direction.

  • I agree 100%

  • @wildernessoutfitters

Is there any chance man vs wild survivor man an dual survival doing a show together

  • Amen to that, Amen to that ...

  • @14DFASniper hey man, i think Grylls does that not as a survival tactic. i don't think anyone is stupid enough to risk their life because they might as well stay put and die... he does it because it's TV and it draws attention and brings people into the life of "survival/bush craft/outdoor activities. just my opinion, you are saying something like Jackass makes kids go out and do backflips with a tricycle. instead if some kid lights himself on fire he is stupid regardless.. i like all the shows.

  • @warpuppyTN70 - As I said...Grylls does it for TV ratings...the entertainment part.

  • @14DFASniper exactly man you gotta give him credit for that because it draws inexperience and young viewers in; along with showing them somethings that are used in the wilderness.

  • @warpuppyTN70 - I'll give him credit for that warpuppy. However, I think Grylls would have better ratings and more respect if he didn't mix the stupidity with survival skills. The two opposites and don't mix. The danger is when you have inexperienced that don't know the difference. The series jackass is all stupidity - so it is relatively easy to know what not to do. The best lies are ones that are mixed with the truth and it is the young that will pay for not knowing the difference.

  • @14DFASniper and i agree with that. what is fact and what is fact after the smoke and mirrors are 2 different things. but i mean, bringing in people he can do; and hopefully the people use right judgment to distinguish drinking water from camel shit and using birch bark as fire starter (which one is real). IMHO if someone is stupid enough to jump off a 100 ft canyon relying solely on a grapple made of a soda can... well then i figure they lack the common sense to survive in their own house...

  • @14DFASniper hey, bear usually says "as a last resort" thats means if there is not other way out. both are good shows and teach different stuff so dont get angry cause bear has more balls

  • @shootinshotguns Oh, I understand you perspective. Bear has more balls because he's not wise enough to figure out that there is a better way? If eating bear droppings makes so much more sense to shootinshotguns then the rest of mankind then you win the Darwin award of the day. Congratulations there buddy. Best of luck to you and enjoy those bear M&M's on your next wilderness outing.

  • @14DFASniper well hes teaching stuff other guys wont do and it works. so yea he does have more balls.

  • @shootinshotguns Ever think WHY most people won't do what he does? Answer: 99.999% of people are not quite STUPID enough to do things they instinctively know will kill them. Can you comprehend that being DEAD is not SURVIVING? No? Okay. I cannot have a reasonable conversation about logic with a crazy person. ENJOY your next handful of e-coli and parasite laden bear droppings. When you are sick from eating your fill, don't call 911 because you will have more balls just like Grylls.

  • @14DFASniper why do you keep going to the bear droppings? that was like once and he isnt handed a bow like dave is to go shoot a turkey which i bet the camera crew just let go infront of him. and if you have ever seen the sow i shouldnt be alive, to teen climb down a 300 foot canyon rock wall with no rope! its possible any one can do it if they are desperate, like i said his tactics are LAST RESORT! and i would do over half of them, if your stuck with nothing in the wild, i would rely onBEARGRYL

  • @shootinshotguns - Grylls has eaten feces more than once, not to mention other things that would make you deathly sick. I give Grylls the credit for being an entertainer but NOT A SURVIVOR. Go ahead and do over half the things he does. If risky behavior like eating feces and rotten carcasses and falling down cliffs with Grylls makes you feel like an educated survivor then go right ahead. You won't survive long. Dave harvest fresh game every day and brings home the bacon.

  • @14DFASniper yea its pretty good how the camera crew releasees wild turkey for him to shoot and then look good, isnt it?

  • @shootinshotguns - So you think thats any different than the camera crew releasing feces containing tapeworms so Grylls could find it and demonstrate how to eat it? Oh, yeah that looks better to those who worship Grylls because he's got more balls than brains. Some people would would eat over half just because Grylls does...and you are right it can be done. Enjoy your new buttworm pets there buddy. :)

  • @14DFASniper you seem to be missing the point im making. bear shows you how to do the more extreme stuff while dave shows us what most of us already know.

  • @shootinshotguns Okay. I'll give you that. Nice talking to you there buddy. It has been an entertaining and enlightening play on words.

  • @14DFASniper lol yes. sometimes its fun to have these friendly arguments. makes you think

  • @shootinshotguns Google search: bearwiki bad advice and inaccuracies....

  • @14DFASniper i agree but i love bear grylls models by gerber. i love them they are great

  • @14DFASniper Haha not to mention any names right? ;) I agree 100% That stuff is ridiculous. One of the greatest commodities of survival is health and safety.

  • @14DFASniper True that dude. Bear Grylls could learn a lesson from YOU.

  • @14DFASniper Well said

  • @windofthegods Thanks buddy. Take care of yourself out there my friend.

  • Here here, on the Leatherman. I used to use mine at work, building 9 ton tractors.

  • Excellent selection Dave.

  • Just a quick thanks for all your great videos. Priceless.

    James

  • Just curious your big on camo and earth tones so am I are you going to do that on the show or will you put yellow tape on tools and such like lundin just curious bye the way 5/5 on vid

  • Dave, who makes the Hoodie you are wearing in this vid?

  • Natural Gear Cammo

  • Not sure if someone mentioned this Dave. Klean Kanteen now makes a wide mouth SS bottle that comes in 12, 18, 27, 40, and 64oz! I have the 40oz narrow mouth klean canteen. Just something to consider. I still use my Standard Guyot designs for boiling on fire. By the way I think you are carrying the standard not the backpacker.

  • Dave, you mentioned solar battery chargers. What brand and where did you get it? thanks.

  • Great words Dave..I have totally fallen for thst snugpak rocket thing,,such versatility and capacity..definitely on my list after a really good jacket..thanks for the heads up on that pack!! Also on behalf of all of us watching recently..THANKS SO MUCH FOR HAMMERING OUT SUCH WICKED VIDS at the 11th hour before the deadline of your new adventures..you've covered so many things in such a short space of time..you are a legend and a gentleman!!

  • Btw, I have a Silva Ranger that I've had for probably twenty years now. Fantastic piece of gear!!

  • Awesome vid Dave. Thanks!! I too would be interested in what you painted your bottle and pack with. They look Great!!

  • wp stands for white parachute. that is the tube that it comes in. the army throws them away by the hundreds. because the signal flare is made of metal and the tube just protects it till it needs to be used.

  • When i saw you carry a torch, i had the idea that if you had a maglight you could use that as a fishing kit too, instead of that piece of pipe, just a suggestion... Maybe a bad one :)

  • I like that light I think I will pick one up for a backup the light I use everyday or should I say every night is a Petzl Tactikka XP headlamp it has 3 lighting levels 1 flashing level and boost mode it comes with 4 wide angle lens red, green , blue, and clear uses 3 AAA's very compact check it out it's a great light!

  • Got one of those to Like it alot, Just not sure it is Durable enough for expedition type use.

  • I have had mine for two years this fall and I have put it through the ringer I have been happy with it so far I would say I have got my moneys worth if it tore up tonight . I take care of my equipment but I buy it to use I'am convinced, but really test it and give your feedback I would like to know how it held up through your use.

  • Before you lose the ability to make videos for youtube will you be able to use that spider shelter for a night? Would love to see how it coped with rain and how warm it was for you.

  • Will these old videos stay on YouTube or are they being taken off?

  • hi dave whats a {all} and whats it used for thx brother

  • An AWL is a repair tool used for feeding cordage to sew items for repair.

  • HAHAHA! if thats what you call a large cigar, you can roll one for me any day! lol

  • i looked at those lights before. when dave says its good,, its good....im buying one. i havent had a LED flashlight and i want one for efficiency and reliability.

    thanks brother dave

  • Glad you mentioned the pack frame.

Personally, I love the ALICE PACK FRAME and the molle II pack tied on? You did an entire video on that combination, and the ALICE PACK FRAME works great. I have been using that constantly. Add a net and you can carry just about any odd load.

  • In my view, a tarp is a poor substitute for rain gear. But that's just my opinion. As for shelters in the jungle, the often aren't needed except during the monsoon season.

  • On many, many occasions in Nam, I spent plenty of time sleeping on the ground, using my poncho as a ground cloth. I slept with my head and hands covered with my poncho liner. That kept my face and hands safe from rats, mosquitoes and other nastiness.

I did have a rain suit that I only used for sleeping, since wearing it while humping the bush would have resulted in it being torn up. In addition, it would have been too damned hot. But at night, it kept me very cozy—damp, but cozy.

  • Long Time Subscriber... Since your urban EDC video... First time comment....

Just want to say thanks for your time...

I have truly enjoyed your videos....

Good luck on your show... keep it real!!!

  • what are pacing beads?

  • They help you keep track of how far you have traveled. By pulling down a bead every time you have walked 100 meters, depending on your footstep, and with the way the beads are arranged you can keep track of 5000 meters traveled and you reset the beads.

  • US Alice FTW! Take care Dave! I will miss your vids.

  • alot of solid points well driven! very good advice, thanks Dave!

  • Klean Kanteen recently came out with a wide mouth version of their bottle.

  • As always great video 5/5 The one thing I wanted to add to the talk about kits is something Dave has shared with us that has cost us nothing and is the best item in are kits . Knowledge ! The last few years Dave has freely added a lot of capability to are mental tool boxes and thats the one thing you will always have with you no matter what items you might loose or might not have and no matter how bad a situation might seem . Dave thankyou sir !!!
