im sorry to see such ignorant comments on here. when we should be respecting such a great poet/musicians decision to make a ton of money with a simple shoe commercial lol.
You are so right. He made a choice that benefited him as a person and as an artist. He made money, he got lots of exposure; you guys are all crazy, nothing is wrong with making money and expanding your audience. Without his music in it, NIKE would be commiting the same atrocitys and injustices they are now. The fact that his music was in the commercial in no way relates to the bad stuff that NIKE is known for. If it wasn't that song, NIKE would have found another song to put in the commercial.
"The question is not why did Saul Williams do a Nike commercial, It's why did Nike do a Saul Williams Commercial...." That's Bullshit. Obviously Nike put Williams' music in their commercial because they want a certain demographic to continue thinking that Nike is a cool brand and to keep buying Nikes. Saul Williams signed off on this and this obviously this does make him, if he is such a critic of consumerism, sort of a sell-out or hypocrite or something like that. But you need money to live...
(Cont.) Many of us who feel the same way Williams does about consumerism and who realize what Williams does about capitalism would do the same thing he did.....
I actually think Saul is smarter than all of you. He knew if he put his music in the commercial he would expand his audience to include those over-consumers who love NIKE. By gaining them as an audience he can expose them to his music and his powerful ideas in his lyrics; maybe, just maybe a few of them will take his words in stride and stop buying from all the BIG companies like NIKE that are ruining our environment and ruining people lives!!!!!!!
'More responsible about the shoes they make' - Kind of shoes they make? Were they making shoe bombs prior to using a Saul Williams song for their commercial?
IMO, Saul is simply playing word acrobatics to justify whatever he wants. It was a pretty half assed response to the criticism.
Its capitalism though, he has the right to sell his credibility to whomever he chooses just as I can choose to longer to consume his work. He's made it pretty clear that our relationship to each other and the world.
As far as your blatantly ignorant, American Neo-fascist thinking of every1 speaking one language is flawed. You say that "civilized" nations are brought into position because of the introduction of English. well if thats the case, lets take our grand spanking awesome country the USA. If by "introducing" English to this country u mean-Slaughtering its native inhabitants, stealing, mass genocide, and the crazy religious right. then by all means, indeed "civilized" are we...
There are no bad words, only what society and its inhabitants have deemed as words that might possibly in the correct context be offensive. Words when it comes down to the nitty gritty are indeed just words, it is the receiver of these words and their perception in which these words are deemed either good or bad, but not necessarily are bad words, just bad feelings are triggered by the words, which can be fair to say that some people have bad feelings, not bad words.
YES THERE ARE BAD WORDS because there are words that interperate negitive impressions and influences toward the free and discerning public. Just because someone should have the right to say them doesn't mean that have to hear them. "Well don't listen!" thats fine and dandy but when you're expecting something to be free of profanity, that's what you deserve, especially when some people get paid millions to watch the type of language they use
Heh, that's their problem for being so offended. How can you be offended by a word? It's the context it's used in. If a racist white guy called a black guy a "nigger". Fair enough. That's not on. But if you use the word in a different context, such as what I'm doing right now. I'm not being racist. I'm just using the word. It's not harmful. If I use the word nigger to describe racism. Noone should find it offensive. It's the racist asshole you aught to be aware of.
I believe when I typed this coment I was referring to the implication that there "are no bad words." Though I understand where you're coming from, what you fail to realize is that words evolved through expressions which interpreted thoughts with combination of writing techniques. Though "butt" and "ass" are both considered words with different meanings, the idea of saying "kiss my ass" as opposed to "kiss my butt" carries a more sharper and negaitive tone pending on the interpretation...
therefore, in definance it could change the statement and place a more negaitve impact on the listener. SHIT, ASS, FUCK, BITCH are words that give off bad impressions based on emotional use of them more than interpretion from them. Though they are not forbidden, they are considered bad.
Never heard of this Saul Williams. Screw foreign languages. If we are all going to evolve into one people coexisting in one world, then we all need to speak one language, so that we can most easily be understood and minimize culturalism. English is the predominant global language, not to mention that it is the language of developed and civilized nations. No government can do to a people anything that the people do not allow. Fight for what you believe in, but don't bitch about it. CONstruction.
"If we are all going to evolve into one people coexisting in one world, then we all need to speak one language"
if we're all going to evolve into one people coexisting in the world, we're going to have to throw out a few old fallacies like we all have to be the "same." people already communicate globally, despite your hypothesis.
Georgie was vastly overrated, as are all "entertainers" who, in saner times, were somewhere between street walker and prostitute on the social ladder.
Early days of Carlin were OK. I hate to hear of anyone's death but I firmly believe that he would change his whole lifestyle if he could come back to life - He is now burning in HELL for all eternity and that is where the majority of American's are going if this country does not wake up and realize that the only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ. READ YOUR BIBLES!!!!
George Carlin didn't believe in capitolism let lone america. Yet, in capitolistic selfservitude you do 10seconds on G.C. then serve your self again a hot steaming dish of panderous pop promotion. Evidence of a "non-believer" of the G.C. message, I note. Using the death of G.C. as a front-end cull to your pop products is stricktly disengenious to his message since he first apeared on SNL. Capitol disgust from me I must point out.
Ok I am like way back into your chan. But keep it real. When the BS gets you. then tell them to fuck off your on the verge of something really speciel. I feel it, know it, and need to happen,
how is saul williams going to change nike with is 25 sec clip? did he take the money from that commercial and use it to improve worker conditions in nike factories? or donate it to humanitarian labour lobbyists?
Believe me, the kids are all effing and jeffing regardless of whether it is on tv or not. I was swearing at a young age... long before I managed to stay up past the watershed. Nothing you can do to change it, and just cause you don't like certain words doesn't mean they shouldn't be used. You could use different language to reach the same intent but the impact is all gone. You gotta try and keep it simple for the simpletons to understand.
It is a social decaying that has such language being use more frequently, and by a younger tongue. Such language was not widely used prior to the 60's. How can the impact be gone when a higher intelligence is used? So just because you are ignorant, i have to curse at you? How sad.
Why can't we insist on intelligence rather than ignorance? I don't see how anyone looking at history, can't judge society as better prior to the 60's.
Firstly, my level of sanity has nothing to do with the topic. Second, this country still discriminates as that is human nature. There is still segregation of wealth, status, and education. More so now then in prior to the 60's.
NON of that has anything to do with the fact that poor language use as a way to communicate ones thoughts, is just the dumbing down of America. Lowering the standard to which we speak, or act, is not a path to higher education, nor excellence.
"There is still segregation of wealth, status, and education. More so now then in prior to the 60's."
This is an absurd statement. Either you haven't a clue what you're talking about, or you're clinically insane. When my parents were young, the United States was a full-on apartheid state. For example, black people could neither work nor shop at department stores in downtown Detroit. Additionally, the day my old man returned from WWII, he was denied service in a hamburger joint in NYC.
Again, i am not sure what my sanity has to do with this thread, but so be it.
So a black man can eat, but a Christian can't pray. But now we hate Mexicans instead of Blacks.
Segregation is still ramped; it has just moved on to a different sect of people.
Class warfare is a business and rooted in politics. Smokers against non-sokers, traditionalism against modernism. Although is some form this has been going on forever.
This of course has NOTHING to do with the improper use of language.
Your sanity is in question because you continue to make crazy statements, such as "So a black man can eat, but a Christian can't pray." That is absurd. You can pray to your heart's content. You just can't force me to pray to your f*cking god! You can neither spell (e.g. Segregation is still ramped--that's rampant, dumb-ass) nor compose a coherent sentence. In short, you're a complete and utter ass-clown.
I think it' the word "segregation" pertaining to wealth that is confusing. There is NOT more segregation than in the 60's, and yes you would have to be crazy to believe otherwise! I think you're trying to say "SEPARATION of wealth" instead of "segregation of wealth" which could mean the same thing linguistically but traditionally means something entirely different. The separation of wealth is far more now than then. I would not only agree but could easily prove, but need 500 more characters.
Segregation: the action or state of setting someone or something apart from other people or things or being set apart :
Separation: the action or state of moving or being moved apart.
By dictionary standards, segregation is more true as it applies to people and the act being carried out by people to people. Separation could imply involuntary whereby segregation is the act of the wealthy to to move apart from them, the poor.
Yes- Linguistically, also can be called called "dictionary terms"
Again you WOULD have to be crazy to say that there is more segregation now than in the 60's. There is a "willful act" of separation of power, and elites to defend power from us, sure. If this is your point then my advise would be to say this instead of trying to make the claim that there is more segregation today than in the 60's. That's is crazy.

Huh?
Teach kids to use bad language (and it is bad when the intent is there), but strike them down if they don't save a tree??
I do wonder: is it those that use such language also doing wrong in society, while those refraining from such behavior acting responsibly?
It is a social upbringing from the start of learning. If you learn to be crude, you will be in most aspects of life.

"Sum People Need Practical Advise"- George Carlin you were and will always be a fucking comic genius

I think the only thing Revision 3 has brought to Epic-Fu is advertisements of their shows and what they do. I dont really know if it is beneficial to Epic-Fu. Anyone else agree?

Its not great but it doesn't bog things down too much. and at least the great people who make epic-fu are getting an income from it!

I grew up with George Carlin and I am so glad that the younger generation acknowledges his contribution. Also the shows keep getting better.

if KRS One can do a Nike ad that's a remake of Gil Scott Heron "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", Saul's gotta be able to go for his too

I don't listen to radio because I don't own a car anymore. Thats really the only time I would ever listen to it.
And I don't know if Saul Williams is a sell-out, but if he took money from Nike, he would definitely be a hypocrite.
