  • totally genius i would want some of that broccoli...you should grow marijuana

  • vos brocoli son superbe !

  • Were these UFO the 660 nm Red or 630 nm Red. Which do you think works best?

  • I was LED sceptical until I saw this video! That is impressive! Thanks for your videos.

  • what kind of nutrients are you using for growing the broccoli bro?

  • do you recomend LEDs?

  • @jean9910

Yes I do. You have to buy from a reputable company though as a lot of ebay lights are cheap ones that lack lumens. LEDs can give anywhere from 20lumens/w all the way up to over 200lumen/w. Good companies will use proper spectrums with about 80lumens/w. I learned the hard way. I like LEDs for home use as they barely heat up unlike HPS and Metal Halide lamps. HPS/MH lamps can cause fires, use more electricity, have to replace bulbs every 8 months, and cause heat issues.

  • Can i do this with red peppers?

  • @thughands

Yes you can. I will be posting a Gypsy pepper comparison grow done with 4 separate LED lights. Gypsy peppers are taste and almost look like Bell peppers, I prefer growing them over bell peppers as they produce at least 2 to 3 times more flowers and fruit than bell peppers. I was very pleased with the LED pepper grow.

  • I believe I used an organic seaweed nutrient for the broccoli. I have tried many types over the years and to be honest their is little to no variation in taste that I can tell.

  • @w8mk

I forgot to mention that everyone who eats what I have grown always tells me about how fresh the vegetables taste. The difference here is that they eat them the same day they are picked ripe from the plants. It really beats the taste of grocery store produce that is usually picked when it is not ripe and then you don't eat for about 5-7 days from when it was harvested.

  • What kind of nutrient solution did you use and have you tried others for effect on taste?

  • This is WONDERFUL! I'm looking to start growing indoors, myself. May I ask where you got your equipment from and if you have any recommendations for how to get started? I'm looking for both an economic and space-saving way to grow indoors. (And hoping to, in the future, be able to expand into a greenhouse or some type of winter garden!). :-) Thanks!!

  • Nice work man!

  • @TheSupernaturalBrand

    Thank you!

  • Awesome. About the cost, well, it's not 100% about providing food, it's about having a hobby, something to care for and care about and admire while it is growing and at the end, you get to eat it.

  • @guest2424

This is true. My actual intention here was to test out LEDs and the cost of growing it didn't matter to me.

  • ye but how much did that broc cost u in electric ?

  • @jonn8ball

Actual cost in electricity was a bit over 11.00 for 60 days. This provided me with 4 very large broccoli plants.

  • are those ufo led?

  • @nazilampshade never mind! just got to the part where you say they are 90w

  • @nazilampshade

Yes they are LED ufo's. There are a lot better LEDs out there now. I will be posting some new videos soon of 1w led chips vs 3w chips. The performance of the 3w chips shocked me when compared to the 1w.

  • @w8mk right on! we have a set of 90watts also. looking forward to seeing more videos!

  • Great job, can you describe your set up? You mention the 90 watt LED lights, but what were your other parts? Can you video it?

  • @DJMovit

If you watch my video on how to build a hydroponic system part 1 and part 2, then you will see what type of system was used. As for the light it was a 90w ufo led light.

  • @w8mk Thanks, I found those and watched them. Another question, what do you add to your water...I seen someone used a product called "Peters" 20-20-20

  • y nt weed ?

  • @damizks I am only interested in growing my own food, but if I ever get cancer I may look try growing some as I believe the oil from the plant is a cancer cure.

  • @w8mk the was a huge broccoli! Really awesome. Iv been growing some heirloom lettuces and carrots and some lime basil. Im replying to this comment because 1. Im a weed user not grower so I thought this was funny and 2. because if you have time you should check out this documentary about a non-marijuana cancer cure. /watch?v=1qG_ZWs04es

  • Damnnnnn that brocoli look gooooood!!!!!!!!!

  • Now just juice the leaves and you have a fully utilized plant.

Also... broccoli will grow in a lot of places through the winter. I have some growing now and we've had frosts for about half of the winter so far, and in some cases down to about 15F

  • @therawlifefamily

I ate the leaves in a salad! Unfortunately our winter starts in November and we usually have a few feet of snow with temperatures of -15F and up to -30F. So, our only option is indoors or a greenhouse.

  • @w8mk How many lbs of salad a week do you think you can grow with your Volksgarden? For me I would need at least 5lbs a week, maybe 3 lbs but I would supplement with a lot more brassicas.

  • so what are the little UFO thingies up next to your head?

  • @scott98390

It is a 90 watt LED UFO light. It is the light that grew the broccoli indoors.

  • Nice, how long did u grow that plant for? Good work

  • @castro1299

    60 days from seed.

  • try useing small trimming shears they work better on thicker stemmed plants ie brocc/ans squash

  • @ray5220

Thanks for the tip... the broccoli stem was literally like wood, even my hack saw took a while to cut the next batch.

  • did you know you can eat the leaves as you would greens

  • @MrSw872

Yes, I ate them in salads and steamed some of them!

  • i wonder about the nutrient value of plants grown this way. People may think the nutrient solution has everything needed but how do they know? maybe there is extra elements in soil that is good for us that they havent found out yet.

  • @poojkhgf

This is such as subjective topic. It really depends on so many factors. For instance, studies have shown how the nutrition of food has dropped over the last 50 years due to over farming an soil depletion. It is astounding at how much less nutrition is in our food in traditional agriculture. Your food is only as good as your soil. Hydroponics has all the nutrition that plants need so they do not lack for minerals. Having said that, they are missing the soil microbes.

  • @poojkhgf

With out the soil microbes, I am sure that something will be lacking, but so far there is information on this topic that I can find in any journal. The idea for hydroponics or aquaculture is to preserve water and grow things indoors during the winter months where the temperatures do not support growing things out side. Once the spring comes, the best we can do is then grow our food in soil using permaculture principles. Hydroponics is just one side of the equation.

  • @poojkhgf scientists can find what the plant wants in terms of nutrients by using a 'gas spectrometer'.

  • Wow thats an impressive broccili, indoors, who woulda thought, great video, i am actually trying to get set up for some indoor growing this winter as well, take care :)

  • @GardenNewbie

Good luck! It sure is a lot of fun to grow things during the winter. It really helps with the winter blues when you can hang out in your indoor garden.

  • if you only cut out the part you eat, the flower i mean, it will grow a new flower, so you can eat several times of of one plant ;) i grow it outdoors in the netherlands, so sorry for my poor english

    greetz from Assen, NL

  • @staalmaffia

This was something that I learned after growing this for the first time :P

The next broccoli grow will be a better one!

  • Ouch , Now I have some idea at the reasoning for the spacing specifications on the package ...I am thinking about going with an in door growing system , reason being. is trying to control slugs.....here the PAC NW we have issues with them slimy pests. I planning on Building my own LED units though..that is cheaper then buying the units in the store,

  • what did you use for nutrients and set up aside from the ufo's, I wondered how well they worked looks impresive.

  • what kind of system did you buy?

  • What led light would you recommend?

  • Great job! You can also eat the stem so you probably tossed it. I looks like most of the growth was in the leaves, you might want to adjust the type of feeding you do and the spectrum of lighting to get more floret growth. It's addicting, watch out scrap book room...

  • @19Photographer76

I agree with you about the spectrum of lighting. These lights were just cheap 90watt led lights. I have been playing around with other spectrums of lights that cost a lot more money and it amazes me about how much more flowering they produce vs the cheaper lights.

  • @19Photographer76 The broccoli leaves are edible too. They make great salad greens. Nice and sweet too.

  • what is the price of this Brocoli .? cuz you invest allot in those lamps

    i like the setup .

  • @Ossters

Yes it was an expensive broccoli to grow and it does not make sense really given the size and yield given back to me. I could have grown 18 heads of lettuce in 3 grows with the same light and system. I just wanted to see what the light was capable of and I enjoy running some tests on what can be done if one is motivated! My other systems were running lots of edible greens and herbs... a lot more practical than broccoli!

  • @w8mk i hear you sir ,i think to stard a indoor pepper garden whit the same lamps but i will just like you also try out more herbs ,

how long did the brocoli to mature ?

  • hey man i want some...no seriously everything could be radioactive..in general we'd need something like this.. how do i grow carrots? dwarf fruits?

  • @pazsion

You can grow a lot of different fruits and vegetables indoors hydroponically. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries will all do well. Blue berries need a lower ph though.... about 5.5 for most types. I have even seen people grow bananas hydroponically. Carrots and other root veggies can be done in an ebb & flow system, however roots veggies do better in soil. Pretty much everything else will do much better in hydroponics vs. soil.

  • This was well done. But totally agree I wouldn't grow it in a tent or grow room as it looks like it takes some serious space. Good work !!! Hope it ate well :)

  • Well done! Can't wait to watch more of your vids.

  • @athenazg

    Thank you!

  • yummy! How many Broccoli plants you had in one system. Were your pot holes bigger for this?

  • yummy! How many Brocoli plants you had in one system. Were your pot holes bigger for this?

  • @SHIVITA31

I was growing 3 plants in one system and I used the standard 3" net pots with the 1.5" rock wool cubes.

  • lol..nice..i think i might grow 1 in a corner since it gets so bulky..an by next year the leds will be cheaper and the whites like phillips "true white r2" will have better par ranges aproaching cfl's spectrum.peace

  • Can we get more details like the kind of led light is it a triband did you get it from china what was it in DWC ect. Don't leave us hanging here.

  • @ve3tru

I have been using a few different LED lights and the few I bought off of ebay did not work well for anything. The one

I used from the broccoli I personally sourced from a manufacturer and I had to buy 60 of them at once to get it for a reasonable deal. I kept 6 for personal use and sold the rest to friends.

It was a tri-band Red 660nm, blue 420 to 460nm and Orange at 620NM. Just be careful who you buy them from as I said, I was very disappointed with the ebay ones.

  • @w8mk

Alot of ebayers saying Orange is worthless...

    ??

  • @doobsta

I haven't seen a difference, I have both tri and just the red and blues. The ebay red & blues did not work well for me at all. It was just a bad seller with cheap leds. My tri-light grew 455 cherry tomatoes on 2 plant that weighed over 11.2 pounds in 90 days. So they worked great for me. I can't post a link on here, but google gothamhydroponics and look at their 180watt dark star for 209.00 it looks fascinating to me. They also have a u-tube video showing how many lumens it out put

  • @ve3tru

Having said what I said about ebay, I am sure there are some good sellers, I just don't know who to trust though.

  • Did you eat all the foliage??

I would have chucked that in a soup for sure!!

Color on that broccoli is very NICE!!

Did you feed it chemicals or???

How can we do hydro organic?

  • @doobsta

We ate most of it by adding it to salads and to green smoothies that had lots of fruit in them. I didn't use chemicals, but I did used fertilizer that is mined from the ground. Minerals and Calcium.

  • @w8mk

    is the fertilizer natural or??

    liquid or powder form?

    thx

  • @doobsta

The fertilizers come in both liquid and powder. The companies that make the liquids are mixing up the powders and increase the price dramatically. I buy the bags of powder in bulk and mix it into 4L jugs that produce a strong liquid concentrate. For around 120.00 it will make close to 10,000 gallons of water. This is for the calcium and for the nitrogen/minerals.

  • All you read is how the ufo led sucks, HPS bla bla I Love it when someone proves them wrong.

You said it was Hydroponics but I cant see the setup what was it DWC or soiless??

Keep up the good work Id like to see another video some time.

  • @ve3tru

The LEDs really work great. Just be careful because some are not made as well as others. Some of the cheap ebay ones do not work very well. Cree and bridge lux make many different types of leds and each one gives off different lumens. Cree right now is making a 1 watt led that gives off a whopping 225 lumens. Low quality 1 watt leds will give off less than 50 lumens/watt. Just research your source before buying them! The broccoli was grown in a home made hydroponic drip system.

  • Nice grow. Now im interested in trading in my T12's for some 90W LED grow lights.

  • @happygameshow

Thanks! I also use T5 High Out Put Grow Lights, they also work great. I will upload a video of them this weekend some time. I prefer the led ufo because it is cheaper to run. Beware of all the ufo clones out there, I unfortunately bought a couple that were from a different source and they don't grow nearly as well. They also are a lot dimmer than my good ones.

  • Great video!!!

  • You did a really good job in growing those hydroponic broccoli! The results are indeed very impressive. The leaves are so huge and the broccoli look really nice and delicious. I can say that using those LED lights did a really big contribution in giving you the biggest yields. Congratulations! Not every grower can have the same level of success using that light fixture.

  • @citigarden

Thanks! I actually very surprised at how well the 90watt led's have worked for me. I grew 2 cherry tomato plants that gave me 455 cherry tomatoes that weighed in over 11lbs. I also grow stuff with an HPS light and T5's, which in my opinion are not worth it due to the energy costs and heat they produce. I also believe that there is a dramatic quality difference in the 90watt ufo lights out there. I will be adding some more footage of what I am growing in early to mid January!

  • I agree on all you say, and see the difference with how you grow. And i respect that, i just wanted to know if you where aware of the specific dangers of bisphenol a in regard to plastics and long time storage of water.

    Keep up the nice work,

    best regards

  • Hello , i tried replying at the forum you made a post about this, but the forum is down.

I started reading about this, and it is very interesting, great work!

One thing i noticed is how many plastic containers are used , are you aware of the dangers of Bisphenol a ,

sometimes closed systems are used in aquaphonics, so the water is in contact with the plastic for very long time.

    Should glass be used?

    best regards

  • Some of the reservoirs that you can buy are supposed to be considered food grade. I know that nothing in our world is perfect and I agree that glass would be the best. I do know that what we buy at the stores contain fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides. A lot of our food is also genetically modified and many farms use human waste from sewage treatment plants for fertilizer, which is often the cause of eccoli. What I grow is organic and contains none of the other things I mentioned.

  • That looks like a beauty. Good job
