To me, it looks nothing more than a thorough routine check. They really haven't touched anything and aren't snooping around. You can tell that they are concerned about some of the stuff you have in your dorm in terms of fire resistance. More specifically, it looks like the staff is concerned about that things hanging from your ceiling as well as the curtains. That's all; I wouldn't worry about it.

@BobbyDuwitz I can't give you much help except to say this. Any contraband in plain sight is subject to removal with subsequent penalties. If you have anything illegal in plain sight, you can expect that campus police will be called unless the person misses or ignores the contraband.

My friend was a Res Life Assistant at Clove Road (Does Clove Road still exist?). She used to do the inspections, and she understood that she had to do this by herself, and she never took anyone or loitered in anyone's room. This is appalling...She would find this horrifying.

Yes, I reported this to the university Ombudsperson, however, due to laziness or otherwise, my concerns were never acted upon. I also sent an email explicitly detailing my concerns to a Lieutenant at the station, but I never received a reply.

yeah they do post signs..but unfortunatly this happens... but it does say that they can key into your room when ur not there to do a safety check... they cant go thru ur stuff but they can look at everything... and they have to come in with RA's... but i do know how much res life can suck

Thanks for your comment. I'm not sure if the hanging garland is the actual cause of this meeting.  One point that this video makes is that this all happened without any attempt to contact me. Without a camera, I would not have known 4 (on camera) or more people entered my room. Regardless, I am very uncomfortable with what I have seen in this video as the entire video does not reflect the mechanics of a routine health and safety inspection. There was obviously some loitering involved here...

Wow, this isn't right. I lived with an illegal immigrant roomate addicted to drugs, and when it was found out she also faked her social security number, the school didn't do anything to her. I'm not a fanatical right-wing or anything, but because I had problems with a mental illness more attention was brought on me. I guess my question is this: If Montclair is doing these kind of searches and bringing on Dystopian cell phones, why are they allowing dangerous people into the school anyway?

You must have neglected to read the housing agreement when you moved in. When you sign it you give the university to enter your room and examine your belongings. If you don't want something like this to happen then live off campus. Also, I noticed that the director of the village entered your room, my question is what violation did you commit to have her personally leave her office to come to your room? I appreciate your criticism,however,I must ask you to show me the contract I signed that states,"you give the university [sic] to enter your room and examine your belongings." The agents of Residence Life may enter a room to investigate matters of safety but that does not give them the right to loiter in a space deficient of safety concerns. This was located at the Village at Little Falls. This is what happens when student workers have access to student rooms. MSU does not do background checks, so the person you sit next to in class may be the same person going into your room. In the past student workers with access to resident mail have even stolen and cashed checks intended for residents...

They don't have cameras in my room; the camera is mine. Like the description says, the point of this video is to show people loitering in my room, snooping through and scrutinizing my belongings. They did not leave a note telling me that they entered my room and stayed for so long. I would not have known about their snooping without a surveillance camera to verify my suspicions...

Yes it was locked. I'm glad I had the camera installed because nobody left a note or told me anything. I would never have known they were even in my room if it were not for the camera. I was very offended, as I imagine you would be, knowing that people were in my room snooping like that...

I had a meeting with the University Ombudsperson and he was of no help. I showed him the video and because of indolence or disinterest, he did not attempt to make things right for me. The only concession that was made through my own complaints is that now whenever there is a room inspection in this dorm, Residence Life posts signs stating which week, but not which day, these inspections will occur...
