Further proof that Wynton Marsalis cannot carry Miles Davis' suitcases. Wynton never got it: No one remembers what Miles said about jazz because no one needs to remember what Miles ever said about jazz. But more people still buy Miles, dead, than listen to or buy anything Wynton plays, alive. Miles is more alive in death than Wynton is, in life. No wonder Columbia cancelled Wynton's contract, listening to his gutless, lame, pathetic reindition here of a jazz classic.
@Bravo6Whiskey No one is going to argue with you that Miles isn't great. But I'm not sure you want to test how great a musician is by how many people buy their records. According to that logic, Kenny G is better than Kenny Garrett.
And ironically, do you remember why Miles left Columbia in '85? That tired fight is 25 years old, man.
I think why Miles Davis a.o. hate Marsalis' playing: it makes them superfluous.
Marsalis includes & overlaps Miles, and Chet, and Dizzy, and so many others... And it pays tribute to Louis, Wild Bill and the like who remembered that it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.
It also shows mercilessly where jazz draws the line and where jazziness (jazzrock, fusion & other pervertions or frivolities) begins.
I've seen him live more than once and I would say that his music is like a long slow caress. Anyone who says he lacks soul is over analyzing his music.
Jazz ? YES and more you play more i love it ... Classical ? NOP ... it's just different vibe ... not your "thing" ... it's same as when Andre Previn was trying to play Jazz .
ahhh...music! whoever says that thought/mind is just an illusion or just a stance/disposition doesn't know how musical creativity is possible given the limited sensory inputs that we have and the finiteness of our existence. thank you for the music.
Wowowow !!!! Wynton is Adorable, Awesome !!! I can to apreciate this Big Jazz Pianist .... And ever, ever will be in the soul of all the public with taste...
he has such a soft, romantic tone like no one ive heard when he wants to, and a staccato that is out of this world. i cant wait till he comes around to my corner of the world.
There is no greatest trumpet player of all time. Wynton is "probably" the greatest of the modern era though. Anyone notice that he seems to have a warmer, fatter tone with this horn than the fancy custom horn he uses now?
Have you heard of Tom Harrell? If not, look him up- his lines are lyrical like Chet Baker, but melodic like bop. Imho, his artistry rivals that of Miles Davis. you wont find much videos of him though. Send me a message and I will send you a recording/xscript of him and surely you will take note in that.
Wynton has strayed too much from his hard bop roots for me. There are a lot of cats still playing the real s**t. Jazz needed Wynton to move the genre forward not beat us over the head with L Armstrong
no, today more than ever, we need a beating over the head from L Armstrong, and if you can't understand this, which is something that is beyond music, then you aren't listening to what Louis is telling us.
Yea right. I respect and acknowledge Armstong's contibution to jazz but there is a post-Armstrong tradition that is being neglected. An amazing cadre of jazz trumpeters are falling into obscurity. Jazz must be seen as a "living" art form not a an art form written in stone by Armstrong or any other creator.
People and especially jazz musicians love to criticize Wynton as perfect but souless, but this song is an example of his emotional depth and disproves his critics. He is a treasure and I'm glad he's alive in our time.
@leoray1234 perfectly said. We all should be glad he's alive in our time. so many wonderful performances... one of his latest album recorded with Richard Galliano i also suggest. Its wonderful.
I live in tallahassee and he works at FSU so i have seen him a couple times and met him once he is an amazing jazz pianist. i even got to see wynton when he came to town a few months ago
I love the video. It's a wonderful melody beautifully phrased. In Gb, no less! Jazz is not a foot race. Don't be worried who is greater or the best. Enjoy the tune!
maybe its just me but wynton dosent sound or even play like louis Armstrong. I am probably the biggest louis fan and i listen to him 4 hours a day. maybe its just me though.
Finally there is person on youtube that thinks like me. YES! You got a great ear kid. Don't get me wrong Wynton is a outstanding musician, great technical player, but Louis Armstrong he's not. If he would play the trumpet like he did 28-30 years ago well it would be another story. The sound he had when he played with Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers was great, because it was his own sound. But he prefers to me a Louis Armstrong sound chaser or "LASC". Anyway thanks for your opinion. -bye-
I dig the discussion of Wynton's sound, there have been changes, and he's still one the the greatest players ever (perhaps the greatest classical player). However, it's kinda moot to discuss his sound in this particular video because the audio is of rather poor quality. It's hard to judge when the recording is as bad as this one. these are my thoughts at least
First of all Mr. Idiot, I know the video isn't very good. I know i recorded it. But to say he perhaps is the greatest classical player, is to piss on all the other great trumpet players. I have followed the man's professional career for 25 years so I think I know a little bit of what I'm taking about. I see that your only 23 years old and you think you have an opinion? Boy, my mouthpiece is older than you. A great musician NEVER is better than other fellow musicians. Learn, boy.
just wondering... but your saying that wynton marsalis isn't better than a starting out 6th grade trumpet player? and don't get mad please haha i just wanna know since your so wise
I don't understand why people criticize Wynton for changing his sound over the years, and say he is not being original. There is not a trumpet player on this planet who sounds like Wynton, or ever will sound like Wynton, and that's original enough for me. Wynton isn't trying to become Armstrong, he's just going for that similar style. No matter how hard you try, no two musicians will ever sound exactly the same.
I think sometimes people pay too much attention to the equipment being used and not the feeling of the notes coming out of the instrument. In case you didn't know, Wynton is playing a Monette in this video and he's had very few mouthpiece changes (2 maybe). The appearance of the mouthpiece may have changed, but the size has stayed pretty constant over the years.
This may be, but his sound has changed throughout the years. Don't get me wrong he's an excellent musician. The man is a virtuoso. But throughout the years he has always chased the sound of Louis Armstrong. And that's fine. I remember hearing him back in the day, early 80's with Art Blakey. He had a great sound. That's why I enjoy listening to musicians like Woody Shaw, Chet Baker and many others. These legends created new sounds. This is called a sound inventor. That's just my opinion.
Ok, I think I know where you're coming from now. I would also add that Wynton is going after much more than Armstrong's 'sound'. Whether people want to admit it or not, but there is a little Pops in all musicians. Armstrong approached improvisation as an art and put his feelings (or soul) into it. He also brought syncopation in soloing, phrasing among other things that had not been done before. I think Wynton has that same sort of respect for jazz music. I agree with what you said.
Hi my friend, it's such a pleasure to exchange ideas with intelligent people like yourself. Sometimes people just can't stand opinions other than their own, but you're different. Your opinion is always welcome on my channel.
