Mandarin is a 700-ish year old dialect.

Cantonese is a 1200-ish year old dialect.

If anything, it's Mandarin that should be considered a dialect of Cantonese, but I know better than to suggest BS like that. China has over 50+ mutually unintelligible dialects, and Mandarin is simply a dialect of Beijing that only recently became the official language of China.

And the same goes if one is to be labelled as a language. To make it clear, Mandarin having the "official language" status doesn't make it any more superior than ANY other language in China.
