I was at the race on Dec. 23, 1957 when I was 8 years old. His bright red boat with a huge scoop on the front stood out, much different then the rest of the competition. . From research it appeared he died when his chest hit the windshield upon the impact, killing him instantly. When they lifted the Moschettiere (musketeer) out of the water the crane had a hard time finding a secure point, the distinctive scoop had been ripped off.

hit his head off water, it doesn't look fatal, he may have drowned, but probably died from that blow to the head
