Ahh the old Red Barn on Grand River. We used to take the bus down to Saturday matinee games. Two bucks and we could sit in the aisles in the balcony, until the ushers chased us out. When I started working, I had season tickets in the balcony, Section 17, Row B. I got six bricks from the demolition site, kept one and gave the rest away.
according to a report the Wings are looking for a new venue since the 30 year lease with the city is up after the 2011-12 season.........look up New Olympia Stadium
An awesome place to watch a hockey game. There was not a bad seat in the house, including the SRO's.The place was boarded up in 1980 and stayed that way until unitl the city announced its demolision in 1986.Some creative soul cut a hole in one of the metal overhead in the rear of the building. After that, there was a steady stream of fans, including myself, who made a pilgrimage back to the building.I went one afternoon with my flashlight and walked throughout the building.I left with 4 bricks.
the steps were so steep it was almost scary, tho great arena even with a smoke cloud hovering over the ice from smokers. This is one old barn that had to be torn down tho,it was very old and not as expensive to replace like baseball stadiums. Now there is the real sports tragedy in this town-Tiger Stadium being replaced by a garbage boring comerica park.
It was in a time wehre historical places were not charished they simply tore them down, now there is some chance of stadiums being used for other stuff but back then they just tore it down they werent as history concious, anyway I like the style its romanesque like a church, and if it had a huge theater organ it might have went down with the stadium, though in many cases they were saved like the barton of the chicago which sadly was hit by fire, and only a little out of it was salvagable.
all the great hockey arenas are gone...the forum the stadium the olympia the garden..they were so great that they were all known simply by one name..you don't see any more true hockey stadiums nowadays
Nice video, but I kinda agree with the Bruins fan...........can't argue with an Original Sixer :) I hope when they build a new arena, it'll be Olympia 2.

In Europe they keep the exterior, gut and update the interior, over and over.
Losing these places to a parking lot is just wrong.
