I was surprised to see who the composer was when I looked the song up on Allmusic: none other than Nile Rodgers. An interesting funk-guitar-hero fusion.
mrhose - agree entirely! Makes me want to go get my axe and practice, but I could practice for a lifetime and NEVER come close to Jeff Beck's 'mad skills', as the kids would say!
I know, I know, shred shred shred.... do yourself a favor and get a copy of Jeff Beck -Wired, plug in your guitar and give it your best shot playing along with "Come dancing," "Goodbye PorkPie Hat" and "Sophie". If you've been playing guitar for awhile you'll have some idea where he's going. Then be honest and try to tell me he's not one of the most soulful, musical and original guitar minds on the planet.
People who are guitar players and in the "know" always laugh at all the attention Page and Clapton got and/or get. Truth has always been that Clapton was not and is not god. Beck is just light years ahead of them all. Totally underated.
Somehow, I never saw this video before. WTF? This is hilarious. Great send up of the 70's and 80's - the parade of "memba them?" celebs showed a great sense of self deprecating humor but then surprise: Donnie Osmond rocked it! What a mensch! Who knew? Hey Donnie, baby, just forget those 20 years of bad jokes and trash talk, k? That solo just shows once again that on top of...no, *underneath*, all of his other talents, Beck has *always* been one low down, rip it up, mutha f*ckin', Bad Ass!
@partofthepuzzle I relate to what you say as I vaguely remember this but know I saw it. I was in my 20's at the time and all caught up into my own ridiculous drama.Always great to meet a Jeff Beck fan
Arguing about who's the "best"? A dead end game where every second arguing & debating is time lost to really appreciating music. There so many facets to appreciate about Beck's playing over a career that's spans more that 45 YEARS! He accomplished the lofty musical achievement of creating a unique and instantly recognizable sound & style. An even greater accomplishment is that he's carried that while at the same time, he's never stopped evolving & mastering new territory. What a gift!
Is that supposed to be "Michael Jackson" over the "Great...great sandwich!" guy's shoulder? I love this video and have watched it many times - that's the first time I noticed that guy behind sandwich guy's shoulder. Funny that I see it today...
bsolutely - i've always said the same thing about Donny and Marilyn. i wish either of them had sung it than the guy who actually does. wasn't Hall the vocalist with Wet Willie ?
long long ago I used to think Eddie Van Halen's playing was the dog's bol*ocks ... I still do ... but it doesn't sit anywhere near Jeff Beck - And Im not talking about just speed or volume but class and originality and Im lost for words
@mrhosehose , not even goin' into discussin' who excells more in playin' the guitar, but there's just one think i'd like to mention: EVH is also a composer, and some of his
stuff is just outstandin'. it just seems like some people look more into technique than song writin', but at the end of the day it's songs that we are listenin' too.
Donny... rockin soulful voice, as always! Handsome & Cool outfit and shades.

Here's the list of singers I have for this video. Does anyone have any additions?
0:44 Phil Alvin (also seems to be the main singer mixed in with many of the "singers" that follow)
0:53 Unidentified two women
1:00 Gerry Beckley
1:20 Unidentified two women/one man (Bull from Night Court maybe?)
1:34 Unidentified (she must have been famous then, because she sure can't sing)
1:43 Unidentified man, looks/sounds familiar
1:50 Unidentified (comedian playing Hasidic Jew) with Cheech Marin

His solo is still utter genious, no matter what you surround him with

Cool to see that the first singer (0:42 -0:47) was Dave Alvin of The Blasters!

Of course, Jeff Beck has the advantage of still being alive.
It would be great if himself and Page and Clapton would do a one shot gig with the Yardbirds.
