  • Great comment, In the late Rock in Rio Festival many musicians from america, from heavy metal to pop, paid a tribute to brazilian music. Kate Perry played a Sergio Mendes tune, and Steve Wonder played "girl from Ipanema". We felt honored.

But we love Americam music as well, the two cultures are very rich musically and attract each other I guess;.

  • Waaaayy better than Black Eyed Peas version...

  • I hate the fuckin Black Eyed Peas, go to caralho fuckers

  • @lucifermuitoma you are wrong. it is mais. go ask a brazillian

  • I just love this song! Oh, the memories.

  • e muito legal esa musica no rio o filme

  • I love this song! I finally found it after 5 years! I really love it, even though i dunno what the hell they're saying

  • AMAZING!!!!! I love it a lot years!!!!

  • Boy, does this bring back memories. They were all over the radio back then.....great sound, great group.

  • I just loooove this song.

  • diiiios m enkanta ste tema es kompletamnt motivador jdr jajajaj

    !!!!!!muuuito muuuuito brazil!!!!!

  • The correct name of the song is "MAS QUE NADA", not 'MAIS QUE NADA"

    "MAS", not "MAIS".

  • @edufasolin actually it is mais because its portuguese not spanish

  • @dsidebass actually the word they're using is mas, wich pronouced in brasilian is very similiar to the portuguese accent mais

  • @edufasolin Its actually mais in Brazilian Portuguese , however its usually confused with Mås ~ Mas in Spanish

  • the girl that was singing is not brazilian, she had an accent in a few words, like velho, you have ot be in brazil for 30 years to say velho, galinha, gatinha....

every language have a though word that you find out somebody is a foreigner, but excellent job anyways, i am not here to criticize. amazing song

  • @rodsator you are right, they aren´t Brazilian and any native can perceive it although their accent are not too strong. Both of them are American: Janis Hansen (the taller) and Lani Hall (the shorter) who used to be the lead singer of the group

  • @rodsator 30 years? Well... If you are retarded, then yes, if not in a couple of days with little effort.

  • @FakGod lol stupid spanish... u couldn't talk perfect portuguese even if you spent the rest of your life trying to do it. Not to say u are spanish and have the gayest accent ever and you could never loose it.

  • @Gonzaga78 What's the reason to say that? I didn't know he had an international classification of linguistic accents...

    PS: I'm not Spanish

  • storica!

  • There's nothing like the real thing..!!

Though the BEP did a nice version to it too...

    :)

  • MEJOR 100 VECES QUE LA CHIC DE IPANEMA

  • oaria raio

  • Awesome

  • I happen to love the sound of samba and Brazilian music ... I feel that buy sampling from other cultures we can really grow and learn more. A society free to borrow from others and the past is culturally richer in music. The influence that samba music had over American pop culture and pop music was incredible. I hope infusion of music never dies.

  • I was just wondering if Ronaldinho is a distant relative of Sergio's as I observe that smile, but I think that song has the strongest ties to a particular sport in the whole history of music. What an iconic song, and i'm just going to see what Jorge Ben looks like, as i'm puzzled as to why Mendez has all of the adulation relative to this song.... ???

  • so those girls aren't brazilian?

they were hot... back then of course

  • @Darthwizard no they aren't. Both of them (Lani Hall and Janis Hansen) are American. Saudações do Brasil.

  • @Darthwizard They're not now.

  • Absolutely super cool !!!!

  • if you are from Latin America and hate this ,then something's wrong with your head

  • @josapology Who coudl dislike this. Everything about this song is smooth and sexy. The beat, the melody itself and Brazilian women singing in Portuguesesse.

  • Beautiful ladies for sure.

  • Those babes where hot ! back then....

  • @Flonase69 yes

  • gordon bennet, can't anyone here speak portuguese? Mais que nada would indeed translate as "More than nothing". However, the title of the song is -Mas que nada- .

The word -mas- means -but-. Without getting too bogged down in idiomatic brazilian portuguese, a reasonable translation of the title would be something along the lines of "So what"! or "You must be joking"!

  • great song me encantan las dos versiones

  • And and the lead singer, Lani Hall, is none other than Mrs. Herb Alpert.

  • the girls can not dance

  • That boat is rockin'.

  • the news... the bus.....id rather be on this boat..

  • I RAN OUT BOUGHT THIS ALBUM AND GOODTIMES WERE MINE MY WHOLE FAMILY WERE INTO AWESOME SOUND MANY THANKS SERGIO!

  • thank you for posting this

  • thanks for posting. Really good.

  • @SenhordoBonfim Thank you soooooooo much! I found it from Equinox, the very one....♥

  • @MonaLisaSmileOTJ NICE! : D

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome sound quality. Thanks! My LP IS trashed. Looking for Shave Shuva (sp)

  • @MonaLisaSmileOTJ Enter "Chove Chuva Sergio Mendes". I tried to post the link, but it won´t let me.

  • I heard from my Brasilian friend that it's "mas que nada", meaning "don't say no", but the Rio accent makes them say "maish" instead of "mas".

  • @grumblekin The phrase "mas que nada" translates to english as "more than everything". I wish it more than everything, Lo deseo mas que nada.

  • @vicmmo: Actually it doesn't. "Mas" is used to mean "although" or "but". You are correct in that the word has the meaning you say, but in this instance it's used differently. Translating it to spanish or english directly won't make immediate sense, which leads me to think it's an idiom.

  • It is my understandind that when Lani Hall originally recorded this, she did not speak a single word of Portuguese. She sings this entire song phonetically! ! !

  • @eecortese, you are absolutely correct!

  • WOW!!!! He is a very undrrated guy Huge talent!!!!

  • so nice video and interpretation..i want that vinyl

  • @iempsa found it at the thrift store yesterday for $1.97. It is a FANTASTIC album.

  • @timleery I'D LIKE TO HAVE IT TOO...BUT is the same version of this video at the vinyl?

  • @iempsa The video is slightly misleading. Lani Hall (the American girl on the right) sang all of the female vocals on the album (her voice was multi-tracked). In the video Janis Hansen (the girl on the left) is lip synching with Hall to Hall's vocal. However, when Brazil 66 would perform in concert both women would sing. So yes this is the same version as the vinyl.

  • @iempsa its the first song on the album

  • @timleery YEAH!!!!!!! I JUST BOUGHT THIS VINYL LAST NITE...SOUNDS SO GREAT!!!!!!! A&M RECORDS..$1.00 (3 SOLES)

  • @iempsadid u buy the single or the whole album? I also like "One Note Samba Spanish Flea", which was covered by Stereolab recently....(Its the song after 'Mais Que Nada' on the album)

  • @timleery I bouhgt tht whole album, althought I'd only bought the single...but it was unavailable

  • @timleery THE 2ND TRACK IS SO NICE TOO, AND THE JOCKER AND AGUA DE BEBER

  • i love the girl of the rigth , i like the way she moves for singing, plus, brazilian girls are the greatest

    uuuuuuuuuuu

  • The girl on the right is Lani Hall, an American girl ftom Chicago, IL.

  • Or is she the girl on the left ???

  • Comment removed

  • I'll defer to your greater knowledge hardbossa. Like Marilyn McC...... an unforgettable voice.

  • @hardbossa I never heard that she was from Chicago! I've been a big fan of hers most of my life and born and raised here! See, it just goes to show you... you can always learn something new! :-)

  • as a matter o fact, she is Herb Alperts wife.

  • beautiful language

  • I really had no ideia that Brazillian m usic had such an impact in the american culture in the 60`s

watching the comments of many people here

    I realize that.

Unfortunally the music today is lacking all the innovative energy of the 60`s and 70`s

  • @pleiadian7 Brazilian music impacted the US way before the 60s. Mainly I bring to your attention the success of Carmen Miranda in her Hollywood musicals of the 1940s. Later there was certainly a revival starting in 59 with the film "Black Orpheus" featuring the music of Luiz Bonfá & Antonio Carlos Jobim which started the bossa nova rage. More hits followed like "Girl from Ipanema", "Desafinado", etc. covered by everybody from Sinatra to Stevie Wonder. Brazil is here to stay!

  • I have this as my ringtone!! Brilliant!!!

  • Apenas hoy descubri esta cancion... Y me enamoré de ella!!!

  • oooooooooooooooh i just love this piano :D

  • aquario 05 i think we have same thing in common coz this is my favorite song and i used to sing this song when i was in the band

  • one song that i always luv to play and sing thankssssss

  • eu amo meu Brasil!

  • what does mais que nada mean..

  • MORE THAN ANYTHING

  • Comment removed

  • It means, More than anything.

  • more than nothing

  • @ab330 more than nothing

  • @ab330 more than anything...

  • I don't think female fans ever had screechier voices than in the sixties, except perhaps the fifties. :)

  • Wellcome to Brazil folks! The most important country of the South America!

  • howd u get this footage?

  • i think the term 'latin' is too vague when it comes to music. mexican folk music is as latin as tango, samba, bossa nova or music (i mean, sure, it's incan music but Peru is part of 'latin america').

if someone goes after 'latin music', he may find from 80's mexican artists, which musically have nothing to do with Bossa Nova.

what i'm trying to say is that latin america is too diverse culturally. is not "mexicans with sombrero" as some people might imagine in the northern hemisphere.

  • I would agree with that statement. That's why Bossa Nova, and every other musical style of note has it's own category, or sub-category, which is what knowledgeable people refer to them by . "Latin" doesn't really cover it.

  • Latin roots in this whole wide world consists of 4 origins; Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy. Considering Brasil as Latin is for the most part true as there are decendants frm these 4 countries in Brazil. But, there are numerous other roots from every corner of the world that would tke me 10,000 characters to list. My father was Russian, my mother German, I was made in Germany, but born in Brazil, and do not consider myself Russian or German, but Brazilian.

  • @varigdc10 and you right english very well. mad props bro

  • That's why you can get so many good things of the cultural diversity!!!

That's what makes something special, when you can mix different stuffs and get a better thing from it!!!

    AMO LA DIVERSIDAD CULTURAL!!!

  • @varigdc10 true, but the same can be said of many countries in "latin america". most everyone is a mix of different groups, not just Spanish or in the case of Brazil Portuguese, for example in Argentina there are people of various european backgrounds...

  • lovely!

  • @chicblossom y'know... I m not so sure they knew the lyrics they were supposed to be singing . I've heard they were singing phonetically and that is eveidenced in this film. If you watch their mouths when they lip sinc the first line they appear to be singing OOOO AH -de I I Oh, instead of O aria' raio. They never make an attempt to pronounce the R of raio. I grew up my whole childhood singing the wrong lyrics! This was such a great song and such a major movement in music in its day.

  • love it..!

  • Isso é BRASIL minha gente!!!

    Amo meu país!!!

  • the song and group that turned a 14 year old onto latin music!!!

  • This is one of my favorite song .I learned this song from my band leader from Cebu during 1980"s. I lost contact with them .I hope i can get in touch with u Mr Castro LOVETUNES I"ll be in Cebu Coming Jan

  • As I recall this was o TV in the USA, I remember this video. But I do know that is the MAN on keyboards. After all these years Sergio looks very good. Only now you see him with glasses. And yes I still have my original WAX (33 1/3) of BRASIL 66. God Bless All and keep listinting to this good work. I here a new album is coming out for Christmas 2009.

    Jbones61 of Houston, Texas U.S.A

  • bacano el disco

  • What a couple of stunning girls singing in the background there !!

  • ssa ssa saborrr!!

    excelente cancion!

  • THIS is the real version - not that BEP crap.

This one is soooo great ... love Lani's voice, apart from that she also looked hawt :)

  • @lastfreeuserid The "real" version is 3 years older than this and is due to Jorge Ben Jor (he wrote it, was only 19 or so). Sergio Mendez just rearranged it a bit to produce what's shown here.

  • @lastfreeuserid Yep, the Black Eyed Peas' versions sucked so bad.

  • Viva a música brasileira!!!

  • Nice to see (hear) Sergio Mendes's version of this classic tune up on YouTube. I've just played this to my mum and now she wants to go out to a Mediterranean restaurant - though it's a bit late for that !

  • fuck bep .... they sold the fuck out, got a ugly white girl and traded their soul for riches ... fuck dem niggaz, they ain't shit, definitely not hip hop, watered-down pop good for target commercials ... Great song, Sergio's the man.

  • adoro essa musica. muito legal!

  • Comment removed

  • black eyed peas are fucking awful .. love this shit tho

  • Those girls sound beautiful!

  • Those girls look beautiful too!

  • to williamkanegatehead: oh, totally.....there was an original clip of them doing this song in color from some TV show in the 60s....a real clear video on youtube (that I can't find anymore). The girls were so damn hot looking I couldn't stand it....so young and 1960s looking

  • You couldn't stand it!? Man, I want to see that!

  • to william....: i just found it but someone put a DJ remix over it.....but still good shots of the girls.....look up MAIS QUE NADA (DJ BARNEY REMIX)

  • I found it inkey, thanks! Now if you really want to see Lani in all her glory, look up -sergio mendes and Brasil 66. I think the song is called Ye Me Le but the title of the video is as I typed it. Enjoy! Oh, Lani, Lani, Lani........

  • That vid you refer to was removed. It's the one where the tall one was wearing golfball size earrings. I had it on favorites and now it's unavail.

  • actually there is a vid of it but the clarity is not as good and someone did a "remix" of it and added in other insrtuments etc. try looking under "Mais (or Mas) Que Nada remix" and see if you can find it.

  • This is simply exquisite. Bravo!!!

  • WoW I've been looking for this song forever. bless you you tube!

  • my god.....this song is the blood and soul of Brazil!really love it! :)

  • Nice video! Thanks for sharing it here! Note, however, that the correct spelling for the song name, in Portuguese, is "Mas que Nada", and the name of the band is "Sérgio Mendes & Brasil 66", not with "z", neither in Sérgio's name nor in Brasil.

Thanks again for posting the video.

  • Makes me wish I was born in Brazil.

  • Comment removed

  • you got a point until your offensive and racist language kills it....what do we gain by insulting and demeaning others??

  • Poor choice of words to prove a point that I'm pissed off about. You're right, apologies to all.

  • thank you...and your point was and is totally valid - rappers' renditions of songs like 'mais que nada' ruin the originals.

  • Yeah, and the rappers are ripping off the ingenuity of the originals!

The Black Eyed Peas' rendition is good, but only because they sampled a superior song. Why do they deserve any credit for Mendes' work?

And on top of all that, people now recognise Mas Que Nada as a Black Eyed Peas song!

  • The Black Eyed Peas are merely doing what Sergio Mendes did. He ripped off this song from Jorge Ben Jor who wrote the original version in 1963. The music industry is filled with example of artists "borrowing" sounds from others.

  • Yeah, but Mendes actually performed the song. He didn't take a recording of it and then use a computer program to chop it up and turn it into background music for a rap.

  • Damn good.

  • Porra, essas mulheres sao da onde? Portugal? pqp

are those girls from portugal? their accent suck so baaad. Its a wonderful song thou!

  • Actually one of them, If I remember right is a New york transplant named Lani Hall, the taller gal, she is now married to Herb Albert

  • oops got it wrong the shorter is Lani Hall the taller is Karen Philipp

  • Hello familiartoy, in fact the taller is Janis Hansen, who was replaced by Karen Philipp by 1968. This clip is from 1966.
