@rudolphna54 Many automatic cars shift above 40mph at WOT. My focus shifts from 1-2 about 45mph at Wide open throttle as well, as does the expedition. It is how the gear ratios are set. Doesn't hurt the transmission.
@wootness3000 Don't have to worry anymore, I no longer have this car. The oil pump went and it got junked for the focus. And the transmission was pretty new anyway, it had like 18k miles on it when this was taken.
@wootness3000 just unplug it on the front part of the tranny. or do what me and my bro did, install a manual switch, just flip it when you are on interstate. same applies for v-6 3spd autos.
@wootness3000 Had that happen on my Beretta with the same 3-speed. Very common issue and easy parking lot fix. You just unplug the TCC sensor wire from the front of the transmission (accessible under the air-box) and it ignores it. You might loose 1mpg on average since the lock-up isn't computer optimized, but transmission shifts fine after that. Better than paying $300 to get it replaced, and gets you going when it's stuck in lock-up and keeps stalling when you decelerate.

It's entirely possible your 99 has a 4 speed auto. The 2.2 received a pretty major refresh for the 98 model year. New pistons and rods, new head, new intake manifold, new computer.

i got a 99 cavalier 2.2 4 speed auto with trac control. and i got 150 lb box in the back and i did 0-60 in 10.3 with the box and a friend in the car. only thing i have done is a cold air intake and relocated my intake temp sensor to the front bumper. that way it gets cold air all the time and advances my timing and gives me a better air to fuel ratio, basically gives it more fuel. made my mpg a little lower but always runs smooth and strong. i would say im around 9.5 with no friend and no box.

At least it's roller cam, not a flat tappet. (What with all SM oils being ZDDP lowered because of the EPA). I just changed the front-right wheel bearing in my cav the other day. I adjusted valve lash a couple moths ago, too. BTW, a camshaft is what lifts the valves to let air in/exhaust out etc.And it's all I could afford.

Careful.. if the lock-up solenoid fails it will fail closed on the 3T40's. Which means everytime you stop you'll stall.
