This is the result of pure dedication. Dweezil had to plow through tons of old FZ rare gear, talk with old band members and tinker for days to get that incredible tone! And that isn't counting the time it took to master the intricacies of the licks When I first heard ZPZ I was literally entranced! IR, Montana, TNS, Son of OC and more all just scream... just wish it'd been a 18 min version of Black Napkins... my all time favorite - along with Maggot Brain! (wth - who could dislike this?)
Great stuff! Yeah, I read about the Hendrix guitar in Guitar Player magazine in an issue dedicated to Frank (must have been 1992 or so, when it was dawning on people where things where going). In that issue there are interviews with each of the Zappa offspring, and Dweezil spoke of the guitar and rescuing it from under the stairs.
If I were to present something of my planet to an off worldly sentient being...this is what I would show them. This is my generations understanding of science, poetry, and music, and string theory and time, and beauty, all in one video. It would do.
i agree. All the good ones die before their time... eddie van halen is lucky to be around if we are honest.
What a fantastic guy Dweezil is; credit to him for upholding everything that made Frank Frank: from the skill right down to the wit, humour and outstanding creativity. Awesome.
Well said. I was lucky enough to see Frank in 75,he was one of a kind and so sad to see him suffer the way that he did. I would enjoy seeing Dweezil if I ever get the chance. Peace
I just meant, for instance, that I've been playing guitars for forty years, pretty much put myself through college in the late seventies, playing bass in wedding bands two and three nights per week, wearing the ruffled shirts and bigass velvet bow ties and EVH Fender Frankie for $25,000 would only make me sound like me.
yeah but it sure is nice to have a nice tone to work with. In fact there area lot of nuances things i do now that I didn't do 15 years ago. Good gear really facilitates that shit. The other thing about Mexican Strats, and EpI Les Pauls, is when kids try to turn them up for a gig. The electronics are always shitty, and have fucked up, tone-robbing compression, etc, but they don't hear it until the run some gain through it.
True,.but he did get the gift of Hendrix burned guitar from Frank. It sold at for over 1 million, said to be the most ever paid for a guitar. Hope he put that money to good use. I think he donated it. Frank taught him well. I saw Frank in Frankfurt in 1976 .His face was all over the place. Big posters and the movie King Kong was being advertised @ same time, I saw Zappa's face beside King Kong statues. He played King Kong that night...I think it was the first time he played it in concert.
That would've been really cool, but the "Live at the BBC" videos were certainly recorded prior to 1976, and King Kong is the first song they play on that.
@boworl The Hendrix guitar was not sold at auction. It did not reach the minimum price asked. Dweezil still has the guitar in the URMK. You can see it on his personal website.
Yup, this looks nothing like the Hendrix guitar, which was all burned up and cool-looking (wonder how it plays, though). Clearly, Dweezil flipped this around for "looks" or something, which is kind of silly. He has tons of guitars and can afford a ton more; certainly no need for a righty to flip a lefty guitar over to play backwards if you're Dweezil other than looks.
When Dweezil found the hendrix guitar remains under the stairs he asked Frank if he could fix it. Frank said yes and dweezil fixed the guitar. Frank had no hand in fixing the guitar. The hendrix guitar does not have a floyd and was kept with the burned paint finish. And not to mention Dweezil auctioned off the guitar before this video was even shot. Ericclapton24000 watch some dweezil interviews and get your facts right before saying you know more about rock than somebody else
@westonmember - Frank did rebuild the Hendrix guitar after it was given to him by Hendrix's guitar tech. The guitar has had several different configurations over the years, You are correct that Dweezil found the guitar some years later but it was in pieces at the time. He put the guitar back together and gave it to Frank. Some time later Frank gave it back to Dweezil.
@QtommyQ Not quite right - Frank was given the Hendrix guitar, but he put it under the stairs, where it lived in pieces until Dweezil found it one day. Frank said to Dweezil if he fixed it up, he could have it. Dweezil talks about in this interview: w w w dot youtube dot com/ watch?v=jRXnPcIK1V8
@seemeel Hey Seemeel. I thought the same thing for a long time too until I start seeing old pictures of Frank playing the Hendrix guitar and he was on the cover of Guitar player magazine with it. Dweezil has his own website where he talks about this guitar - hopefully this link goes through -
If the link doesn't go through, I'll send it to you.
This is not the hendrix guitar. 1st off it was Dweezil who fixed the guitar when he found under the stairs in there house. He asked frank if he could fix it up and he did so frank let him keep it. Secondly the strat does not have a floyd rose and it was kept with the burned paint finish and was auctioned off before this video was even tape. So no offense ericclapton24000 but that is not the hendrix guitar. watch some of dweezils interviews and get your facts right dude

No really? No fucking shit he was left handed! I have an article in a Guitar & Bass Mag Issue, and iut clearly states that Hendrix burnt it on stage, left it for the next prefromer who just happened to be Frank Zappa. Frank brought it home, fixed it-up and remodled it, reversed the neck and Dweezil now owns it! Trust me! i know more about rock than you probably do man! No offense.
Ok, I have an interview with him, and what you're saying is true, except that this isn't the same guitar. Dweezil clearly states that he doesn't tour with any of his dad's old guitars. This is just a strat that he owns.
Frank and Dweezil come from two completely different styles from two completely different eras. Dweezil was influenced by people like Edward van Halen and Steve Vai where Frank was more blues based. To incredible performers as far as i am concerned.
My comments weren't meant to dismiss what you were saying, and I apologize if it came across this way. I will say that Dweezil has changed his entire style of playing to learn his father's music over the past three years. I have seen Dweezil play live a few times and met him once. I was fortunate to catch the ZPZ show here in Dublin Ireland in June 2006. The man standing on the stage was without question 'his father's son'.
yeah you're right. Dweezil is great when he plays like this . . . rather than what isn't " meant to be played on guitar." I dont really like hearing st alfonzo's on guitar, I prefer the mallets.
@QtommyQ Great point man. For Dweez to have mastered his father's music makes him one of the most diverse guitar players in OUR time. I am so grateful to have met him as well as see him play live several times.
thats not even that much gain. all you need to do is crank the preamp and have the power amp pretty loud(im talking about a good tube amp) that'll get plenty of gain. otherwise add a boost or OD pedal ontop of it. But that really isnt that much gain that he's using.
that is really amazing if you did get that guitar. its the coolest strat ive ever seen, really. do u know where dweezil got it? like the fender custom shop or somthing?
This is so badass! I remember seeing this video on the Zappa site, I thought it was just a Fender Strat Copy, now I see that its a custom and actually says "Zappa" where it would usually say Fender. Cant wait to see ZPZ at Summerfest!

soul doesn't come only from lack of speed.
it's the feeling when you play, then you know, if you play with soul.
if you play fast, it can still be soulful, if the player feels so.
and the whole debate on youtube is redicilous. how can we decide, whether someone plays with soul or not?
we can't.

This is so badass! I remember seeing this video on the Zappa site, I thought it was just a Fender Strat Copy, now I see that its a custom and actually says "Zappa" where it would usually say Fender. Cant wait to see ZPZ at Summerfest!

i dont think its a floyd rose
it sorta looks like the american standard tremolo on steroids but it certainly dosnt look like a floyd

It looks exactly like a Floyd Rose.
Because it is a Floyd Rose.

reverse headstock, Original Floyd Rose, noiseless single coil pickups?

Fender should make a vintage like strat or tele, with a floyd rose setup. I think it would be perfect! Dweezil's guitar is just bitchin.
