Interesting, I'm thinking of doing a regen receiver. It seems critical to tune, is that a vernier drive on the left? Also what is the meter for? (I didn't see it move, is it signal strength?).

Yes, it's a vernier dial.
Any SSB receiver, particularly one that covers several megahertz in a 180 degree dial turn will be critical to tune.
Hence vernier dials are used for both the main tuning and the fine tuning.
The meter is not used for much. Only for battery voltage when a switch is pressed.
