I watched your first video and it enticed me to get your cutter as I have a ton of bottles i wasnt able to recycle so i figured to turn them into candles. I noticed that the first two i did were neat on one side and broke uneven on the other. Is this because i didnt score the glass with enough pressure? I know you said you dont have to score it over and over but does it need to have heavy hand pressure for the intial score?
@thepinupgirl Universal score, not depth. Single score creates the weak 'link' in the glass. Practice scoring and cutting broken glass, glass cutter & breaker/grozer pliers is all you need, and the world is full of broken glass, look at what you got! The best video I've seen is the guy who scores with a regular glass cutter ONCE then uses a mini torch then grinds the glass smooth, I've got a roto-zip that I'd use. Look at some stained glass videos. Heavy hand? No, not with glass. ;¬)
U don't need to cut bottles , u need to weld them in a line off 20 at lest , and u get a solar hot water tank and collector in a same time . am thinking bake 2 bottles in a Owen for 20 min , take the button of one and head off other one , and 2 torches should melt and connect those two. repeating this u get cheapest solar hot water in the world .
I believed you the first time too. No matter who you are or what you do, somebody's going to come along and say they proved you're wrong. So that's them, so fine.
I JUST FUCKING REALIZED I CAN USE THE TOP + A SCREEN TO MAKE A FUCKING BOWL! I CAN FUCKING POP THAT SHIT OFF, DRILL A HOLE IN A WHOLE ONE, AND MAKE A FUCKING BOWL IM SO HAPPY.
I think this is quite interesting. It kind of proved my stereotyping towards cut open glass wrong. Although this might not be useful for daily life, it is still interesting. Let's say, watching videos might not actually bring any good to you (of course there is... just saying.) why do you still watch it?
@candymoonxstars In case you change your mind:-) Kidding, actually people have used them for fundraiser auction items. They get bottles, cut them and fill with golf balls, stuffed animals etc. Then take a small piece of ribbon in and a bow to cover the seam or cut the bottom off and mount to a base that covers the seam. People flip out trying to figure out how they did it. Turns a $1 stuffed toy and a scrap bottle into a $20 bidding item (or so I am told:-)
A good glue that i like using is the windshield mirror glue. That stuff holds for ever, because of the harsh conditions that the glue has to hold through
I'm confused. If the bottle was cut, why does it matter if it holds water or the top fits? What do you need to reseal it for? I assume that you are just using the bottle for a vase or something.
IM not trying to be difficult or anything but what is the point in cutting the bottle so it seals in the first place? Why would you want to cut a bottle in half if you need it to hold water? Im confused. I just came across this video as i am building my first aquarium.
God, what a shame, you're making great videos and people are being picky about silly little things like having your hand over the top... Must be frustrating and having to make a second video to clear things up. Keep up the good work Dan & Denise!
Thanks for your advice. I was careful not to cut anywhere twice. Maybe the water was too hot. I'll try again. I've always wanted to be able to do this.
You should not hear the glass "tink" from stress, too much heat. You will only see a light change at the score line, almost hard to notice if done with the right temperature. Thinner glass, less heat. Do one small area then work the crack around.
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE Thanks Dan. Having good success with it now. Made a cutter out of a bar clamp, a C clamp to hold the cutter onto the bar clamp, and of course, a glass cutter. Cool!
I've followed your directions as closely as I can but still can't get it to work. Some of the glass breaks long the score line, and the rest wherever it wants to. There must be something I'm doing wrong, looks fairly simple in your video. Does it have to be a certain kind of wine bottle?
who gives a shit about holding the water. It's fairly obvious that this is a pretty good method for cutting some glass, especially a bottle. The cut is obviously clean and the method is not abrasive at all, hell you could teach a fairly young kid to do it.
Dan I saw thins man in China that made a solar water heating system using old bottles I was thinking the best bottles to use would be the darkest beer bottles. I would love to make one way larger than I need to use for washing clothes imagine washing your clothes with water that is solar heated. Bottles are to be had by the hundreds every night from just one night club. If someone could find a use for them commercially they could have a decent side job home spun.
Dan, I can't wait to see if you can cut several bottles to make a vacum tube... Then with a water pipe in it and then see how hot the water will get...
NEAT VIDEO. Yes glass is an interesting creature. Google glass fracture analysis for more details.
I used to work in a frame shop. And the oddity about glass is that it tends to begin 'mending' unless you snap it soon after the score. Try it both ways (on sheet); Score, snap - and - score, wait a minute, snap. You'll see the wait made a much more jagged edge.
Dan: I started thinking about how to direct the heat, in your case the boiling water, using a narrower stream in order to avoid the stress fractures that you got in the glass near the otherwise clean break. Couldn't think of any novel ways using water. But how about using a very thin wire/heating element, like a DC toaster element. You could input just enough amps to get the min. heat required to break it. You could place the wire right on the etch mark, [almost] all the way around. Might work
The point? The POINT!? The point you ask? Why, it's so obvious - to make ships in a bottle, complete with water for them to float in. No no, just kidding... refer to the previous video. The glass is green building block for anything you can think of. Here he's just showing us here that he wasn't scamming us on the last video.
This is the same principle as a mechanical seal; these are used in al pumps to seal the turning shaft from the housing. When you make the "seal faces"' very flat and polish them you can turn the parts without losing any fluid. Interested in how it works? Search for "mechanical seal"in Google or on YouTube!
he uses the cut halves and makes glassware, for drinking, you know, cups. some people were commenting on the how to video, and this is simply a response to those comments.
Whats the point ? LOL If you want the bottle to hold water just don't cut it to begin with ....I was laughing all way thru this , It just seems stupid to me ..Maybe I am missing something ..
quickly can someone tell me the point of this, an experiment and urban myth, foolishness maybe i am not sure why this is available for viewing simply to show two halves of a bottle can hold water when combined.
Dow Corning #3145 is great, but any aquarium RTV will work very well, in fact RTV is by it's very nature, is cured via water in the air, not an anaerobic (without air) or solvent based adhesive/sealant. I adapted another variation of this method,as follows...
1) score the bottle
2) dip bottle in boiling water for three seconds
3) place bottle under cold faucet water
4)repeat steps 2 and 3 as needed.
*NOTE: A snap is heard, then you can pull two halves apart easily worked 5x in a row perfectly with pelligrino water bottles

If so, then could one perhaps set it up so when a dinner guest uncorked the bottle, it would literally fall apart?
