Amazing...I am definitely on a Paul Williams kick right now, but am still trying to find "Live Goes On' on youtube...any help? I have searched everything!
Since Paul wrote the song, he knows exactly how to express it. The West Coast group, Punch, also did a sensational cover of Paul's song on their debut lp, "Punch".
Art Garfunkel's voice has much more angelic tones, and embues this song with a great deal of sensitivity.
BUT I think that Paul Williams sings the lyrics like... when you're waiting at the bustop alone reminiscing about days long past, on a grey rainy day...
Definitely sadder-sounding, and it works beautifully.
@michaelgadsby Garfunkel's voice is too angelic for this song, Paul Williams on the other hand sings like a loner who smokes and drinks too much (and has never taken singing lessons) with the deep sadness....
His voice has a certain loneliness in it. I think he sang it real and simple, nailing the exact sentiment. I love the song and I listened to Art Garfunkel's cover for years which Art did it with great technique. But it sounded too much a showmanship of his singing than presenting the song in its true colors.

Wonderful, like all his songs. Even better than Mr Garfunkle's version, which I have loved forever :-)
