Personally, if their next release is as great as Dramatic Turn of Events - with or w/out Mangini involved in the writing process - I would rather prefer MP not come back.

No disrespect to MP as a drummer, but it seems that his tastes have been edging toward pure Metal over the last few releases. It was clearly showing in DT's music, and shows in his projects since he left.

So far, w/out MP, they've gone back to being more Prog. I prefer a Prog DT over a Metal DT any day

@bobhilbri Very true, but at the same time, even if Portnoy ever wanted to rejoin DT, you can't just fire Mangini, and say "Hey welcome back Portnoy! Glad we have you back! Alright now where were we?", and just tell Mangini to get lost. The other band members also get a certain connection with their new drummer, so that would be a very weird situation.

Maybe he says hey my family cant take me doing all this touring or i cant tour anymore i wanna go back to teaching...Might sound far fetched but so was the thought of DT being with out MP, never thought id see that day. The songs on this album are good...im more interested in seeing what happens when MM contributes to the writing process. Then we officially have the "new" DT album

I just cant get over MP not being there bc of how much these songs mean to me, nothing against MM. BTW i have to comment on how im finally hearing a good live recording and his drums really do sound amazing!!!! Reference Pure series from pearl i believe. Maybe one day MP will come back who knows.

@mastrorj68 I felt that way too. It's hard to get over Mike P. not being in DT. But you know what? Mike Mangini is absolutely amazing and also one of the best drummers in the world. After watching him live in SD on Dec 1st of this last year, he totally gave the band a different, even better energy than what Mike P. gave. I think that has alot to do with Manginis energy and stage presence, not to mention his off the charts drumming techinique.
