... Best they change it from Superman to Saving Lois Lane, because that's what he does every... single...freaking....Episode, I never watched his movies because of her!
oh my I just loved this. This is my favorite Wonder Woman I think and trumps later incarnations of her. she is not a stuck up "princess" the justice league cartoon made her out to be and she is a kickass fighter without being a blood thirsty Xena clone like the 2009 animated Wonder Woman movie made her out to be. Plus she has some personality.
Superman's personality is so different. He bloody growls ''LOIS RUN!'' and then makes jokes on Lois's not so 'noble exists. But least she's safe'. Its horrid O_O!!!
Future Comment: I just really loved the end when she actually kissed him, they REALLY should've gotten married and had a baby. Unless he got married to lois, either way the episode was quite the classic, peace.
This is a pretty good episode from the 1988 Ruby-Spears cartoon. Wonder Woman is handled very well as an equal of Superman. Excellent animation and designs. I truly miss this approach to serious animation as I am sick of serious cartoons looking cartoony as we have had fof the past 15 years.
This was on very early Saturday mornings, that's why it didn't catch on. Had this went on we would have seen Green Lantern next. They had no clue what to do with Batman.
This was a great episode. It was the first time I saw wonder woman use her real strength on the cartoons. And the first time i seen her fly. Great show.
@Uru19861 Apparently, "Scott" refers to General Winifield Scott, civil war commander in chief. The expression goes back to that period-- Even Mark Twain uses it.
@taiko78 Superman has said, "Great Scott!" for as long as I can remember, in comics, "The Superfriends" - I even think George Reeves and Bud Collier may have said it.
The thing about the plane isn't just her flying, but that they make her fly super fast too "faster than mercury". What's the point of a plane for someone who flies that fast. Look at Hawkman, him having a spaceship is fine, he's not that fast(relatively speaking), and he can't survive being in outer space. For him, it's a great tool and cart. But with wonder woman, It'd be like the martian manhunter having a plane, or superman having powerful telekenisis.
The plane is not only used for flying in her post crisis history, its also used as a vehicle between supernatural dimensions/magically transporting WW from her own dimension to another. Its used as a weapon of invisibility and disguise against beings who are not invulnerable or immune to magic.
If you knew ANYTHING about the WW mythos or her character, you'd know that.
I know they tried to make it some weird morphing thing that failed to excite anyone. And whenever I checked, I didn't see much dimension hopping at all. And she's never needed much to talk to the gods. All you've told me is that it acts like a teleportation spell. Which still makes it really lame as a vehicle.
@GadGades I agree with you. WW may have had the invisible plane forever, but that doesn't make it any less stupid. An immortal amazon from a mythical island has a PLANE? How about, oh, Mercury's winged sandals if she can't fly oh her own? And how the hell is it a "weapon of disguise" when you can still she HER inside it?
@Timesobserver Agree, the good thing about the justice league shows is that they really punch the bad guys. What is the point of superpowers if you can't kick some ass? The artwork of the old shows are great, but the filtering of the fighting scenes screws up everything.
@junglemanlawyer1 I knew the 80s were going to suck for action cartoons when all THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN ever did with his sun-sword was cut peoples WEAPONS in two.
@GoblinXXX yep I remember Thunder the Barbarian, Galtar and others. Those shows could have been so much better if they were not so sugar watered. He Man also had a sword and never actually fought anyone, and lets not forget the outrageous "Conan The Conquerer" the wussie version of Conan the Barbarian. Even Rambo was wussified in order not to hurt anybody's feelings.
@junglemanlawyer1 Don't get me started on CONAN and RAMBO. "We can't show even ordinary "cartoon violence", so let's make cartoons about two of the most blood-thirsty characters in fiction!" Great plan. (The HE-MAN toys began as CONAN toys to be marketed with the first DeLaurentis movie, and someone realized it was rated R and not for kids-- So he became a blonde, and the rest is history.)
@GoblinXXX I didn't know this fact about HeMan's merchandises starting as Conan's stuff! Do you remember "Tarzan Lord of the Jungle"? It was also made by Filmation and it was very good in terms of art work, but Tarzan resumed in sugar watered wrestling with no punches or kicks. Also in that "Africa" there was Nordic looking people, Romans, bird people, Aliens from another planet, but there were no Black Africans.......... Don't know why...!
@junglemanlawyer1 Their Tarzan and Flash Gordon shows are what struck me about Filmation re-using the same shots over and over. Tarzan had a whole vine-swinging sequence they recycled endlessly. Flash Gordon did the same with their early CGI spaceships. (They had done that forever, but it was more noticeable here because the repeated shots were markedly higher quality than the stuff around them!)
@GoblinXXX Good point about Flash Gordon! Actually the cartoon was better than the Big screen movie.
And answering the question about the Tarzan series, yes, the time line was early 20th century. I also read the first 4 of the 27 E. R. Burroughs Tarzan's novels, and you are right, I don't think anybody could get away with that in today's world! "Tarzan of the apes" was writing in 1909 and published in 1911.
I like they differentiate wonder woman here. It parallels my own views. They show her flying but she doesn´t do it for anything other than long distance travel. Though I prefer her not to have it period, it makes the plane redundant, and the plane is cool. Second they show her as the more acrobatic fighter, not relying on strength on shear strength.
Actually, this series blends Post& Pre-Crisis heros; for instance, Wonder woman CAN fly, but is a dynamic fighter and the only amazon who can. In this series, supes had ALL of his powers since he was a baby [they show skits of how he used them after each episode].
The voice work, art, humor & characterization here is top-notch. Besides, while Supes is FAR stronger than the Cyclopes, the magic is something his pure strength has problems against. This series FAR surpassed the one from the 90s.
Damn Shenruss you really explained that in detail, very informative. I really do love Superman: The Animated Series however. I may have found a new found love for Supes '87. So I'll buy it on DVD.
And hey, even though Superman retains all his original abilities in this show I like his 90's incarnation more because he's depowered. I hate it when Superman becomes too powerful, things get predictable.
@Wallcrawler Hey, Wall; sorry to take so long. I'll agree with you, making him so powerful that NOTHING is a threat is problematic, but ALL they had to do was what they did here; make the opponenets/struggles conversely powerful or tricky enough that he has to use his BRAINS as well as brawn. I mean Supes CAN'T be in 2 places at once, HAS to take the damage to the area/others around him into account, and ALWAYS holds back like 60% of his power. With those rules, even NORMAL threats could be EPIC
Too bad,Wonder Woman never had her own Animated series back in the days. Still this is a well animated episode of Superman. Ruby Spears did a terrific job.

As far as the old argument, I personally like Wonder Woman flying. She can still use the plane if she wants to.

Thats like saying people can walk so why do they need machines like bicylcles, cars, or trains?
The issue of the plane is trivial and she can both fly and possess theplane.
The plane argument is just another weak excuse to depower her.
